predictable

This was mildly entertaining. It was extremely predictable, and I can already see how book three of this series will go without even reading it. This only had minor differences from book one. I found myself skimming large sections.
There was only one spelling error that I noticed: everyday for every day.
Leslie is a bar owner. She is wary of men because of her mother's experience. She's friends with Kylie, who has her sights on one of the Hart brothers (book three) and with Janna, who has already married a Hart (book one). She feels that Riley Hart is giving her mixed signals, and that he acts like a typical male.
Riley is the movie star brother. He has a reputation of going through women like tissues: use and discard. He is haunted by a childhood experience which holds him back.
There's also the requisite villain, who is introduced and dispatched quickly, and of course this is the catalyst which cements the relationship between Riley and Leslie.
The price is right for the content. I prefer the format of this new series: no cliffhangers. I'll continue reading for as long as the author pumps these out.

I loved Riley and Leslie's story. It was great to read how even though they both suppressed their bears, it didn't stop true mates from coming together. I can't wait for Ryan's story.

I enjoyed Riely and Leslie's story. They were both so good at suppressing their feelings that they almost lost out. This was a fun read. I hope Ryan's story is as good an I don't have to wait long.

Wasn't for me...

I stopped reading this book at the 91% mark. I know what you’re thinking: 1) why am I rating a DNF (did-not-finish) but more importantly, 2) why did I not finish the book when I only have 9% left. Just hear me out okay?

I have finally reached my limits with this book. Judging from the high ratings from most readers though, I’m in the minority who feels this way, so before I even say anything else, please don’t let my upcoming negative thoughts about this book discourage you from reading it if you were interested before.

With that being said, this book didn’t work for me. Actually, that is really putting it mildly. I had so many problems with the characters, with the storyline, with the romance, with everything I don’t even know where to begin.

Going into this book, I was pretty sure it’d be a winner for several reasons: I’ve read and enjoyed a book from this author in the past so I shouldn’t have difficulties with her writing style, the love/hate dynamic is something I was in the mood for and I was ready for the angst to hit me hard, and I was really in the mood for a NA read. But from the very beginning, I started to struggle with the story. I’ll just walk you through my thought process all the way up to the 91% mark where I just could NOT go on.

My first issue was that this book is way too similar to Bully by Penelope Douglas. Having re-read Bully about 2 months ago, there were similarities that stood out so vividly I actually went back to Bully to re-read some parts to compare and the essence of some scenes were virtually identical. I’m not insinuating anything here though. Every book with a similar premise is going to have some overlap – it just can’t be helped. However, the following parallels I couldn’t get over and when I read them, I was instantly reminded of Bully and that just cut a lot of my connection to this particular book.

1. Dane has a best friend named Reid who’s a Madoc 2.0. They both have lighter personalities and are a source of comic relief in tense situations.

2. Kennedy leaves town only to return as a tough as nails girl. Tate leaves her town only to return as a tough as nails girl. Kennedy meets her bully Dane again at a party. Tate meets her bully Jared again at a party.

There were other little things like how in both books, the heroine stomped over to the hero’s party because the music was too loud and how in both books the hero and heroine were neighbors etc…Once again, it may just be me being too picky but because Bully’s story is fresh in my mind, I really did feel like I was reading another version of it, at least in the beginning.

By then, another issue came up – forget the jerk hero, I didn’t even like the heroine. In the beginning, I truly sympathized for her because of the hero’s cruel antics that tortured her, but when the story is fast-forwarded to present day and she supposedly has grown a backbone, I was less than impressed with her character. It seemed like on every other page, she either giggled, stammered, or cried. Not to mention she was extremely clumsy and fell twice, both times effectively grabbing the hero’s attention that way. I mean…couldn’t there be something different? And then there was one scene (the one with the flowers) where she was going to get payback on the hero and it was so.very.dramatic. Like over the top dramatic and my eyes couldn’t stop rolling. It’s safe to say I wasn’t head over heels for this heroine.

By this time, the hero and heroine are already sleeping with each other, leaving me to wonder what the heck happened to the love/hate dynamic. You know, the kind that's ‘I–hate-you-but-I-can’t-keep-my-hands-off-of-you-either’ type of relationship. There was no build up: it went from rude remarks to instant banging. Dane got jealous from the very beginning and Kennedy couldn’t stop thinking about how hot Dane was from the start either. Thus, the whole enemies to lovers premise wasn’t really strong and the lack of buildup was disappointing.

Another thing that bothered me was the focus on all the side character drama! It’s great to have a strong side character cast and in this book that was the case, but there was too much focus on Dane’s best friend, Kennedy’s two best friends, guys on the football team, both of their siblings, etc…and not enough focus on Dane and Kennedy.

And then, there was a little issue I had with the timeline of the story. It was so choppy! I go from the beginning (3 years into the past), then the present, and then from there, every other chapter seemed to do a small time jump ranging from a few weeks to months. For example, the first time Kennedy and her best friend meet their new roommate before college starts, right after that chapter it’s already a month later and fast forward to when all three become best friends already and go out to celebrate Kennedy’s birthday. I want the details too – what happened in that time lapse? What happened in the other time lapses? This kind of timeline made events seem so random and disrupt the flow of the story.

And here we are, at the dreaded 91% mark. I honestly don’t know what else to say about this scene other than it seriously pissed me off, it made me throw my iPad at the wall, and it made me feel stabby for hours. But most importantly, it made me believe that there was NOTHING redeeming about the hero. At this far in the book, the hero and heroine aren’t even together. What does that say about the romance and their relationship? Their messes are far from sorted out and then they get into this fight where the hero says:

“You don’t get to cry. It should have been you in that car, not Jewel [hero’s sister]. Your brother should have taken your life with his, and not hers.”

Seriously. How in the world do you move on from something so hurtful?

For him to say this it would take a lot – A LOT – of groveling and such to make it up to the heroine (and me, the reader!!!) but if you noticed, this is at the 91% mark. I don’t even need to read the last 9% of the book to know that it’ll be rushed to tie up all the loose ends and give these characters a happy ending, especially since they weren’t even a couple at this point. So I thought to myself – why bother continuing? It’s obvious that the last 9% isn’t going to change my opinion for the rest of the book. My reading time is already limited and I can’t afford to waste any more. One thing this book did accomplish was make me so angry I can’t even think about reading another book, at least for a few hours or so. As I will never discourage anyone from reading a book, I’m going to end with READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!

DISAPPOINTED. Spinless female lead and douchebag male lead. *SPOILERS*

I'm really annoyed because I wrote a review already and somehow it was taken down. But I feel like someone needs to let other readers know that this book isn't worth the time. I originally started off liking this book, the beginning was good and it showed promise. I thought it was a little reminiscent of The Bully series by Penelope Douglas but then I was like, hey, you know what, I'll give it a try anyway, hopefully it will be good. Sadly, it wasn't. It was almost a carbon copy of that book, but worse.

Nothing, and I repeat NOTHING, gets on my nerves more, than a weak, spineless female lead. Throughout the entire book, and for the better part of Kennedy's life, Dane is nothing but vicious and horrible to her. This is not foreplay, it is not harmless flirting, it is BULLYING of the worst kind. He is unnecessarily cruel to her. And it takes her all of two seconds to sleep with Dane, without so much as an apology because "he's so hot". No. Just NO. I can't stand females who think this is ok?! Let a man treat you like crap, let him walk all over you and then fall into bed with him because you just can't help it?? Where's the self respect?? I don't care if he is Adonis himself, if a man psychologically tortured me for YEARS then I would not just sleep with him because I couldn't help myself. My vagina does not rule me and the decisions that I make. Ugh.

Dane- was the worst kind of male lead. Sure, you warm up to him a little throughout the book, but after the 80% mark, I knew it was the point of no return. I closed down the book on my kindle and refunded it. It was that bad. If there is one thing I do not want to read in my romance book, it's my H telling my h that he wishes she were dead, NOT only once, but reiterating it AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN. How dare he?! I don't care how much he is hurting, how upset he is, I don't care that he said he was sorry. He could have given birth to baby Jesus himself right now and I wouldn't have cared. He crossed the line and in my eyes, there was no room for redemption from his character.

The supporting characters were ok, but not memorable. I thought it was pointless having most of them in there and thought the author only put them in there as an afterthought so that she could continue writing books in this series. There was no point in having Ashley in there, she is barely there the whole book, Beau- popped in at the last minute, Chase- barely see him, he's really only there to give Dane competition for a whole of 2 seconds and Grady, the stereotypical, if badly written, gay best friend.

This book showed promise, but unfortunately fell flat for me. I have a huge no go policy on weak whiney female leads and douchebag male leads and that's what you get here. A h who let's the H treat her like complete and utter crap but let's him and sleeps with him anyway. Not worth the time frankly

this story started out okay, despite the terrible grammar (someone please get this author a dictionary and a Harper's Handbook). The conflict was believable and the characters were sympathetic, despite Dane being such a jerk. But the resolution was completely unbelievable, especially after Dane telling Kennedy he wished she were dead. There were far too many holes in the plot, such as Kennedy being in the water for three hours...in December...while a passerby did nothing but wait that entire three hours for an ambulance.

This author needs to hire an editor, PRONTO. someone who can not only enforce the use of appropriate vocabulary and slang, as well as punctuation and sentence structure, but who can also be trusted to tell the author when they are being just ridiculous. Oh, and someone who will also bar the use of the apistrophe entirely without his or her consent. It's not that hard...apostrophe for posessive, no apostrophe for plural. This author even used an apostrophe in the spelling of the hero's last name, Winters, for Chrissake ("Winter's"....really?).

I would read a future offering by this author, but only to the point of the first ridiculous line in the book. (Such as, "There was a shadow, moving across the floor, and when the figure appeared in the living room I lifted the bat. 'Whoever you are, you have five minutes to leave before I start swinging.'" Who gives an intruder five MINUTES to leave? Next time I see something ridiculous like this, I'm done with this author.

Another case of literary blue balls

Even though I was less than pleased with the previous offering in this series, I still downloaded this third one in the hopes that the potential the author showed would finally shine through in this book. Unfortunately, I was again disappointed. Let me be very clear on this. I like the premise of the book including The Gathering to find fated mates, love her descriptions of the sex scenes, and even am intrigued by the hints of a plot she begins, but she leaves me with literary blue balls every time I finish one of her short stories. In this offering, Leigh finally mates up my favorite character from the series, Moira. Even though she had precious few moments in the previous books, she still drew me in with her strength and elegance. I was excited to see she would be joining a triad, especially a bisexual one, and it featured the enigmatic and powerful Blaze who was the leader of the shifter government, and his mate, Dante. Once again, the sex scenes were steamy and hot, but the rest of the book left a lot to be desired. The author did a slightly better job of fleshing out the heroine and giving her emotions and a small background. However, she did not give her H's the same treatment. I was left, once again, with questions that had no answers. I was left with squandered potential and a story that seemed rushed and too short. I was tempted to try more of her books, but I will stop with this one. The only thing worse than a bad author is a really good one who doesn't give her stories the time, care, attention to detail, and character development that creates a rabid fanbase that will keep coming back for more. Unfortunately, this author is more of a book tease who seems in too big a hurry to get to the end to actually give her books the flesh they need to give me a satisfactory literary climax. Hopefully, as she advances in her writing, she will grow as a storyteller, too.

This is a short story, third of The Gathering Series. It’s also the last of this “season”, but don’t be sad because Ellis Leigh informs us that this is not the last. There will be future Gatherings.

Like the previous books of this series, this one is described 1st person, as well as from different points of view, too. Here we have the thoughts and feelings from Moira and Dante. Although not all authors can do something like this, portray a story from the 1st person point of view, Ellis did a good job. There were no mistakes in forgetting that she chose the 1st and not the 3rd person to do the job.

Now, about the story…

Moira hides her loneliness and envy that she was not amongst the happily mated members of her pack. She is sure that she’ll return to her home alone.

I hated that I felt this way, that jealousy and loneliness were stealing what should have been a happy time for our pack.

I didn’t begrudge their luck; I just wished I’d been smiled on as well.

Five centuries have passed since Blasius “Blaze” and Dante mated and they are searching for their third. Blaze is losing hope, but on the last night of the Gathering, he and Dante find their mate. She is perfect for them, kicking Alpha Kosrath—Mr. Short, Dark, and Not-at-All Handsome—in the balls when he steals an unwanted kiss.

As Blaze is the President of the National Association of the Lycan Brotherhood there are plenty of Alphas that would truly kill—well, kill him—to get the title, so he and Dante have to wait for the next day to claim their third.

Every wolf salivating to take your spot would see her as your ultimate weakness, and she’d become their prey. We can’t let anyone know you’ve found a new mate until she moves into the Fields where we can keep her safe.

But Moira doesn’t know their identity or the reason for holding back and their disappearing from the ballroom. And when she finds them, they are together. Will they convince her that they want her in their lives or will she go back home, heartbroken?

The book, like I said, is short. It is a pleasant read, but there is no tension, no action. If you’re searching for a book that will be emotional and immersive, keep searching, this is not for you. But if you are searching for something simply nice, short and relaxing, stop searching: this is something you’ll like.

A fun, fast and steamy read

Blasius, Dante, and Moira, the third book in the The Gathering Tales short story series. The Gathering is a annuel meeting of the North American werewolf packs. A chance to network and maybe find your fated mate. The Gathering is coming to an end. Moira O'Shea has mixed emotions, call her pack mates have found their mates but her. Her brother Killian the Aplah found his mate the first night, so Moria as the current Alpha female has taken over his responsibilities. Moira has been so busy,negotiating her pack mates matings, she has not had much of a chance to enjoy her time at the Gathering. At the closing party Moira thinks she has found her mate, but when she finds him in and intimate moment with another man, she fears rejection an walks away with out making contact. Blasius, "Blaze" and Dante have been mated for 500 years, powerful Alpha wolves who have been searching for their third. Blaze and Dante sent their long awaited thrid, but Blaze's position ast the NALB President make him and Dante targets, and don't want to claim her in such a public place. Moria is shocked the morning after the final ball to fine that the President of the NALB and his mate are her mates. Only the most powerful wolves form triads and Moria does not see herself as a powerful wolf. A fun fast, steamy read. I love these type books when time is short or a quick mental health break is needed.

The magic of St. Paddy's Day

What a delightful magical well written short story. This short story offered a wonderful reprieve from a busy day. Enough of a story to read on break or lunch. Kind of reminds me of the old movie Brigadoon with Gene Kelly. This short story has the same flavor. I loved the characters Kian (pronounced Key-in) And Siobhan (pronounced sha-vaughn). That if love is meant to be it will happen. Totally enchanting story. If you love time travel stories you will love this one!

A few days before St. Patrick's Day, Siobahn Flannery, a burned out NYC barmaid, gets a surprising customer.... a Leprechaun. Ok maybe he's only a man dressed as one, but at the end of every night he leaves her a gold coin to for this exhausted waitress means a magical journey with hopefully a happy ending.

I found "The Luck of the Irish" to be an amusing romantic story with a happy ending. If you're looking for a cute St. Patrick's read then this one is a good one to pick up.

but this just wasn't that great. The story itself was okay

Maybe I was expecting too much from a short story, but this just wasn't that great. The story itself was okay, but the whole romance is based on love at first sight and I just can't swallow that bit of tripe. It really could have used just a little more to the story to give the romance a little more foundation and explore the whole magic of the story a bit more.

I Want to Go to Greektown for Dinner!

I LOVE IT!!
I've been a fan of the Greektown series since we first met Jill and her family in The Greeks of Beaubien Street. Of course, I'm from Detroit and have been in love with the real Greektown for decades, so that may prejudice me a little bit, but no matter--this is a highly entertaining series. Suzanne Jenkins always brings a twist to her stories, so much so that I often read them with a little apprehension, wondering who's she's going to kill or pervert next. And I mean that in "the nicest way possible."
As with the second and third books in this series, the murder investigation almost takes second place to Jill's family's stories, but it's still a good one. I was pretty sure I knew who the killer had to be but wasn't completely sure until close to the end because things kept changing. In the meantime, we catch up with everyone in the extended family. Who's getting married? Who's not? Who's crazy? Well, half the folks in the family are, but that just adds to the fun.
I'm not going to tell anything about the plot. Get the book and read it for yourself, and if you haven't read them all, please, start with the first and read them in order. It's like a great dinner, appetizer to dessert.

Another great book by Suzanne Jenkins!

I love the Greektown books. The descriptions of life in Greektown Detroit are spot on. Set during a typical Michigan winter, the family upheavals and tribulations could happen in any family. The murder scenes in A Wedding are a little tamer than we are used to reading from Jenkins. I hope this isn’t a trend. The gritty, jaw clenching murders in the earlier books are more to my liking.

The brief rehash of the last book, Christmas in Greektown was helpful, divulging some new info about what had happened at the end.

I can’t wait to find out what happens between Jim Pappas and Liz! So many new couples to keep track of; the author could help by putting a family tree in the next book.

Spoiler alert: Jill doesn’t seem too thrilled with the situation she finds herself in at the end of the book, which is more realistic to me than if she was jumping up and down for joy.

I can't get enough of the Greektown stories

Suzanne Jenkins has done it again. A very entertaining story, which combined a little romance, mysterious tale of murder, and a lot of Greek family dynamics. I can definitely recommend this book and series and can't wait for book #5, which hopefully picks up with what happened with Sally and George and the rest of the families. I recommend you start with Greektown Stories Book #1 and take it from there, so you know who's who and can follow the story better.

Dragon fun!

I loved these books. There was humor, hot sex, feisty and strong women, AND no typos. None of these are stand-alone books, though. You have to read all four to be satisfied. Also, The beginning was a bit dicey because of the weird way Evie comes into Bram' s life. It felt slightly...off but quickly turns into a great love story. I seriously laughed out loud more than once too, which is a rare occurrence for me with romance/erotica. I recommend these books! I'll definitely be looking at the author's other works.

In love with this series!

So far this is the 2nd series I've read by Jessie Donovan and it's just as addicting as the 1st! Evie and Bram are the perfect match, her sassy attitude breaks through Bram's tight control. It's fascinating to see him lose that control. I loved that the author still includes characters from the previous series and gives you a sense of what's going on in their lives too. This book has humor, romance, action, some pretty hot sex scenes...all well balanced with such a flawless flow. I can't wait for the next series, Arabella & Finn :) I would highly recommend this series!

Great dynamics!

Bram Moore-Llewellyn is the Stonefire Clan Leader. His male clan members get an opportunity to have a sacrifice who is human to bear them young. Unfortunately, not all of the woman survive their pregnancies. The inspectors make sure these human females are treated fairly and that the clan abides by the female's contract.

Bram is strong and dominant and his Dragon is very opinionated with him.

Evie Marshall has been a DDA inspectors for around 7 years. She has now been threatened by the Dragon Hunters. She has a plan to seduce the Clan reader of the Stonefire Dragons so that he will protect her. Bram just get under Evie's skin and makes her temper flair. She always wanted to be a sacrifice for a Dragon Shifter, but unfortunately, she is not compatible.

These two are strong willed characters. I laughed out loud a lot. He is strong and dominant and his Dragon is very opinionated with him.

There is a lot of sex in this series. I am O.K. with that. If you are offended by explicit sexual content... Then this series is not for you.

a great addition to the series

What an exciting and well written novella. Boyce definitely outdid herself with this one. This story was funny yet emotional, romantic yet oh so very real. Boyce deftly transports her readers back into the past with her seamless narrative and picturesque descriptions. The plot of this tale is absolutely unforgettable, bringing readers a real page-turner.

I formed an emotional connection with the hero of this tale right from the prologue. Getting to know him better was a pleasure. The heroine’s naiveté was priceless. The commotion she caused through it was endearing. She was also completely approachable as a person. Seeing them muddle through their situation, both together and separately, definitely made my day.

This fantastic story is a must read for all lovers of romance, be it historical or not.

Truth Within Dreams is a rather strange novel. There are some scenes which just go beyond normal to bizarre and this destroyed the romance between the leads for me.

The opening scene of this story is weird. The hero Henry De Vere (a sleep walker) wakes up to find he has done something rather disgusting in a courtesan’s slippers. He is ashamed and the reader has to guess what he has done but whatever, it left a terrible impression on Henry. This turns him off to ever sleeping all night with someone.

Claudia Baxter is his friend and she is in a quandary. She is being forced to marry an older man she does not like and to make sure she does not find her way to the altar, she sneaks into Henry’s bed while he sleeps over at her family’s home and stages a seduction. She is sloppy in this and she is beyond naïve to reckless. Claudia seems to think there will be no long term repercussions from her actions other than avoiding an unwanted marriage to a man not of her choosing.

Claudia seems childish throughout this novel and part of the problem is she is treated as one. Her family does not really listen to her well or laughs off her fears and requests and she seems hopelessly unaware that there are second and third order consequences for her actions. Claudia and Henry finally have a bit of substantial and deep conversation about halfway through this story.

The two leads have been friends for a while and Henry has feelings for Claudia but he does not seem overly wrought about her marrying a man she does not want. Claudia does mature but it takes much of the story for this to happen. Now the ending is satisfying and not just because it is a happily ever after, rather it is because the two leads finally are honest and sincere with each other, no playing games and no hiding behind half-truths. I wish there had been more moments like this.

Claudia Baxter has a problem. She’s about to be married off to an aging dandy, and she has to find a way to get out of it. Her parents are determined to see her settled, so drastic action is called for. Her twin brother’s dear friend (and her childhood companion) Henry De Vere has come to visit. When they were children, Claudia always took part in their games and escapades, in fact, she was the instigator of many of them. So now, she concocts a plan. She will sneak into Henry’s bed, and make it appear that she is ruined, so her elderly suitor will reject her. What Claudia doesn’t know is that Henry has suffered from sleepwalking for most of his life, which has put him in a lot of precarious, embarrassing, and dangerous situations. Only recently has Henry begun to believe that the problem is going away. Now Henry wakes to find Claudia in his bed, the whole household is awoken and crowds into his room, believing the worst. The “props” that Claudia used make it appear that not only was she ruined, but tortured in the process. Henry believes the worst, that he ravaged Claudia while he was sleepwalking and is filled with guilt and self loathing.

Henry is such a dear man, my heart broke to see him suffering. He was so filled with remorse and anxious to put everything right. Making it worse is the fact that Henry has been attracted to Claudia, but never acted on it because of his sleeping disorder. He felt that he was not safe to be around, so he planned never to marry. He now offers to marry Claudia right away, but he has become a villain, and is banished from the Baxter household. I had a harder time with Claudia and her scheme. She went ahead with her plan without letting Henry know, and then, even when they had a chance to talk together before Henry had to leave, she didn’t tell him the truth. I found her a little weak for just not turning down the marriage her parents were trying to arrange in the first place.

Once Henry accidentally stumbled into what really happened, he concocted a scheme to get back at Claudia. While I’m not a fan of paybacks, unless it’s at the villain’s expense, I did feel that Henry deserved to get some of his own back. It was this painful incident that finally made Claudia realize just what she had done, and the consequences for Henry. Despite these reservations, the book did make for a unique and entertaining read. If you enjoy a historical romp, or a little madcap short story, Truth Within Dreams will fit the bill.
