Cara Moreau is dying from a supernatural curse. Her only chance of survival lies with the warrior, an enigmatic man who comes from a realm "in between." Quin St. Clair lived hundreds of years ago, but now exists solely to protect the world he once called home. That's all he will tell Cara, the woman he must keep alive by remaining close to her. Very close.

But Cara is determined to discover more answers as she grows to like her warrior. While they search for the book of spells and the cure contained within its pages, their feelings for one another can no longer be denied. But what will happen when Cara is cured and Quin's assignment is complete? And can she trust this mysterious man with the book if they find it?

As friends and family from the previous Freak House novels help them, and old and new foes vie for power, Quin and Cara must not allow their feelings to get in the way of their task. Or Cara's life, and Quin's afterlife, may be cut short.

Ghost Girl continues tradition of drama, adventure and love
By L. Galway
I have been a fan of CJ Archer’s paranormal trilogies for several months now, and Ghost Girl — the first book in the 3rd Freak House trilogy — delivers every bit as much as the first “Emily Chambers Spirit Medium” novels (The Medium, Possession and Evermore), upon which subsequent stories are built.

Her fluid, descriptive writing in first person allows the reader to experience only what the narrator (in this case Cara Moreau, Emily Chambers’ young aunt) hears, sees, feels or discerns; the reader becomes immersed in the journey rather than viewing it as a bystander.

Archer does an outstanding job of bringing the reader up-to-date with the important characters and events, so if you choose to read one of the trilogies out of order, the drama and adventure make sense. She has an incredible ability to create situations and solutions at once intriguing, surprising and satisfying.

The relationships between Archer’s main characters are intense, sometimes forbidden, but always perilous, romantic and rewarding. The prospect and plight of Cara's and Quin’s love story promises to transcend the impediments surrounding them.

I cannot stress strongly enough how grateful I am for this body of work, which continues to enchant and engage from start to finish. Read them in order if possible, but don’t miss out on an opportunity to become acquainted with and fall in love with Ghost Girl and all the books in each “Freak House” trilogy.

I received Ghost Girl from the author in exchange for an honest review, and it has been an honor.

Excellent Start to 3rd Freak House Trilogy
By DTChantel
In the first book of C.J. Archer’s 3rd Freak House Trilogy “Ghost Girl,” we are treated to Cara Moreau’s story. As you will know if you’ve read the other books in the series, as well as the Emily Chambers Spirit Medium Trilogy, Cara is a spirit medium. As part of the action which ended the 2nd Freak House Trilogy, Cara was affected by a supernatural curse and as the book opens, she is dying. On that somber note comes Quin St. Clair, a mysterious warrior from an unknown realm, to keep Cara close to him and thereby keep her alive. From these dark beginnings, we’re treated to a mostly light-hearted romp as Cara and Quin try to find the book of spells which contain her cure.

I really enjoyed the funny banter between the two as they slowly came to have feelings for each other. Cara is a quirky and likeable character with a lot of spunk and a strong personality. As you root from them to find the book of spells, you also come to realize that with the finding of the book will come a parting of the ways between Quin and Cara, as he’ll have to return to the “in-between.” But because there are two more books in the series yet to come, I’m hoping they’ll get their happy ending eventually, but not before they have more challenges and obstacles to overcome.

Amazed!

I could not put this book down. I was amazed at how everything twisted and turned in Ghost Girl! I love this author and the Freak House series. If you read this you will be asking for more before the author releases them. I love the way that some of the characters are in this one and some are not and it explains s Carl's background a little more and adds new people as well. I can only say that you will be reading this over and over again!

I received this book from the author in return for an honest review.

SHIPWRECKED, KIDNAPPED, RESCUED BY A FRENCH PIRATE – THE BEGINNING OF A LOVE AFFAIR
By Robin Leigh Morgan
I received a signed copy through a giveaway on GoodReads and the following is my honest opinion for this novella.

I’m a romance author and the main reason I don’t venture into writing Regency or Historical Romances is the amount of research needed to make sure the things written about are correct. While errors in regards to editing are “acceptable”, factual errors aren’t.

Ms. Evans has basically done a decent job in this regards, however there are times in which the language being used is not appropriate for the time the story takes place, which some editing should be able to resolve.

The storyline deals with a shipwreck, in which two young sisters [Atia and Livia] survive and wind up in the worst city possible during the years the story takes place, 1869 in Port Royal, Jamaica. It is here they get kidnapped, separated and wind up in the slavery system which is prevalent at this time.

This first novella is essentially about Atia since she doesn’t get reunited with her sister Livia until towards the end.

When they get separated Atia becomes the prize in a card game. When the scorned French pirate, Gator Gar, becomes enthralled by the sheer beauty she possesses he quickly sets out to free her from her predicament. With a price on both of their heads they make their way to the Blue Mountains after which the attraction they have for each other becomes intense. There is unexplained outbreak of scarlet fever in the city which aids them in their escape.

While I enjoyed the premise for this volume of the serious, the storyline itself could be tighten up a bit. All-in-all, with all things considered, I’m giving this first volume of the series 4 STARS.

`Giving a bloody damn'
By Grady Harp
MJL Evans and Gary M O'Connor are from Victoria, Canada and this novella is the first installment in a six part novella series about not fitting in - `in the modern society of the late 1600s, a time of danger, violence, bondage, love, sex, drugs and parrots'. It is the first published work for both authors who share similar tastes in art and subject choices.

Coming upon a first work by co-authors is always and interesting venture. Before remarking on the work itself, the following is shared form their website: `A ship was destroyed in a hurricane, two sisters survived. Imagine being shipwrecked, imagine surviving only to be kidnapped and taken to the wickedest city on earth. Welcome to 17th century Port Royal. Atia Crisp is soon separated from her sister, offered up for sacrifice. She will be rescued by the man she's destined to love. Danger lurks at every turn...friends are few... they must escape to the safety of the Blue Mountains. No quarter - no mercy.'

The authors' synopsis of the plot helps a bit more: `Against the brutally decadent political stage of 1689 Port Royal, Jamaica, the unswerving Atia Crisp is thrust into the world of bondage, violence, beauty and love. Shipwrecked and sold into slavery with her sister Livia, the pair are soon separated and Atia is used as a pawn in a card game. Captivated by her loveliness, Atia is swiftly liberated by the outcast French pirate, Gator Gar, whose past is stained with blood and grief. Working with a network of friends and allies including local strumpets, a card shark and the kindly unconventional Dr. Strangewayes, the couple are ushered away to safety after a mysterious outbreak of scarlet fever wreaks havoc on the city. Within the luxuriant tropical confines of Dr. Strangewayes secret plantation at the foothills of the Blue Mountains, bonds of friendship are formed and the fierce love between Atia and Gator Gar becomes absolute. Atia is soon reunited with her sister, piratical father and unexpected old friends. But nowhere is safe as spies seek out both Atia and Gator Gar for the bounties on their heads. Neither of them can escape the shadows of their former lives and must rely on each other's strengths for survival. Their journey leads them to an inevitable conflict that threatens their world, but inches them closer towards freedom.'

Ideas - solid. The problem with the piece not hanging together is the disjointed fracturing of the process of the plot - something a good editor could fix. The language is very contemporary - a significant amount of X rated words and phrases that somehow do not fit into the time frame would seem appropriate were the story modern day. One gets the feeling that there is a strong sense of humorous writing trying to emerge (the sections with Dr. Strangewayes are particularly well drawn) - some passages work, some struggle. But there is most assuredly a flavor of 17th century piracy and derring-do that seems to promise further adventures (since this is a series). Fine intentions, just a need for polish and editing and re-thinking period appropriate conversation. Keep in mind this is a beginning, and it is short enough for readers to get a taste of the authors' direction. Grady Harp, February 15

Good, but a bit confusing for me!
By mint tea
In this exciting book, which is the first in the series, we meet a pair of sisters that is trying to escape to safety on a boat when they encounter huge problems. A result of these problems is that they become enslaved. Then, throughout the chapters, we meet a large number of other characters, which are not easy to keep straight. This book deals heavily with pirates, boats, and ships, so if you aren’t versed in nautical terms and concepts, you may be a bit lost, as I was. However, the story is quite interesting and you can get a good feel for the main characters. There is also a lot of French spoken and some modern words thrown in, which offer a bit of help when trying to relate to the story more, and at times is quite funny. I would recommend reading this if you like pirate stories.

The White Lady
By Kent C. Matthews
What a blessing to read a book that encourages a life pure in thought, word and deed. This book is deserving of a 5 Star rating because it is more than a Christian romance. People were created with a purpose - fellowship with a Creator. The young people were faced with promising lives, encountered challenges, and had to set lifestyle priorities in this story. They had to determine whether or not to change their allegiance to self-gratification. Self-gratification does not always lend itself to long-term happiness. This book places a bright spotlight on the consequences of choices.

I have been reading Grace Livingston Hill books for over 50 years and I have never found one that did not inspire me.

I am such a fan of GLH. Her books are inspirational but also give a glimpse into the life and times she writes about. For a gentle lady she puts in lots of action.

This one is so-so
By deborah
I love the Grace Hill books, but this is not one of the best, either for delivering a strong story for Christians or a strong romance. The heroine is just okay, and the romance, with a struggling minister in the town where she chooses to relocate after losing her considerable fortune, seems to happen rather suddenly at the end of the book without any building attraction or interactions of genuine depth. It's a good evening read, but there are many other far better books by Grace Hill. I deleted this one off of my device after reading it though I've kept more than a few others.

Standing outside Chesapeake Shores High School on his first visit to this quaint small town on the Chesapeake Bay, Aidan concluded he'd never seen a more beautiful sight in his life.

Not the hillside covered with a forest of flowering pink and white dogwood trees, though that was spectacular and unexpected in the middle of town. Not the nearby bay, which was sparkling in the spring sun, though it made him yearn to go fishing despite the fact it was something he'd done only once before in his life. Not even the state-of-the-art football stadium with its pro-level electronic scoreboard, its lush grass and impressive permanent bleachers, all of which should have knocked his socks off as the school's prospective coach.

Nope, what caught his eye was the slender woman with her blond hair tousled, her laugh carrying on the breeze as she chased a puppy that was trying valiantly to herd a flock of unhappy Canada geese.

Just then the dog, some sort of black, white and brown Aussie shepherd mix from the looks of him, spotted Aidan, bounded over and tried to corral him into joining the geese in the nice tight group he was apparently envisioning in his instinctive puppy brain. With a black patch of fur around one eye, he bore a striking resemblance to a pirate, causing Aidan's smile to spread.

"Stop it! Archie, that's enough," the woman commanded, fighting hard, but unsuccessfully, to swallow another laugh. "Sit. Be nice."

Archie obediently sat, tongue lolling, and gave Aidan a hopeful look.

"I'm so sorry," she said. "He got away from me."

"No problem," Aidan replied.

"Actually it is a problem. The town has very strict leash laws," she explained as she snapped Archie's leash to his collar, "except for the dog park on the other side of the hill. It's fenced in, so the dogs are allowed to run free, but Archie here spotted the geese, instinct kicked in and the second someone opened the gate, he took off on a mission to round them up. He thinks it's his job."

"He's very good at it. Where do I fit in? Not being a goose, that is."

When she smiled, amusement setting off sparks in her deep blue eyes, it quite simply took his breath away.

"Oh, he thinks anything that moves is fair game," she confided. "He's very diligent."

Aidan, who'd never owned a pet, regarded the dog warily. "What happens now? If I move, does he try to snag me by the hand to drag me back?"

"I think you're safe for the moment, though if you happen to have a dog treat in your pocket, you'll make a friend for life."

"Sorry. No treats."

As if he understood, Archie stared at him dolefully, then inched closer, finally butting Aidan's hand.

"He'll take a good head rub, instead," she told him. "Don't worry. He really is harmless. I've only had him for a couple of weeks, but he's been a real gentleman. His owner had to give him up because he was too energetic for her, so he's looking for a new person and a new purpose."

"Thus the geese," Aidan guessed.

"Exactly."

"Are you his new person?"

"Oh, no," she said at once. "I already have two dogs and a cat, none of which I intended to have, but people know I take in strays and try to find new homes for them. When something like this comes up, they bring their pets to me. Cordelia's grandchildren meant well when they gave her a pet for her birthday, but they didn't really think about her being close to eighty. It happens a lot. People think the elderly need companionship, but they really have no idea which animal might be best suited for the job."

"And you do?"

"I'd like to think so. Cordelia now has a beautiful cat whose owner died. Fluffy sits in her lap and purrs. They're both content with their new arrangement."

"What about the three animals still with you?" he asked, sensing that she was a woman for whom compassion probably overruled good sense on many occasions.

"I'm afraid I got attached," she admitted with a rueful expression. "I'm Elizabeth March, by the way. Most people call me Liz. I own Pet Style on Main Street a few doors up the street from Sally's Café. I opened just before Christmas last year."

Aidan couldn't stop the grin that threatened. "Pet Style?" he repeated. "I had no idea pets were fashion conscious." He glanced pointedly at Archie as he spoke. The dog was happily sniffing a buttercup. His leather collar looked as if it had been given a good chew on more than one occasion. The serviceable, but unremarkable, leash was equally worn.

"They're not, but their owners sure are," Liz said. "You'd be amazed. Just last week I sold a fancy rhinestone-studded designer dog collar for $150. I'd expected to be stuck with it, but thought I should give a couple of highend items a try. Sure enough, a tourist grabbed it up an hour after I put it on display."

Aidan shook his head in astonishment. On a beginning coach's salary, he'd be lucky to buy dog food and pay vet bills. Thankfully, he'd spent frugally and invested wisely during his couple of years as a pro football player. When he glanced back at Liz, she was regarding him speculatively.

"You wouldn't, by any chance, be looking for a dog?" she inquired, turning those bright blue eyes on him in a way that would probably get most men to agree to do just about anything she requested. "He's up to date on all his shots and he's housebroken. Best of all, Archie already likes you."

Archie was, indeed, happily sprawled across his feet, apparently having concluded that he was no longer going to be allowed to run free, so Aidan shouldn't be allowed to budge, either. He promptly perked up at the mention of his name. For half an instant, Aidan was actually tempted to say yes, if only to make this woman happy. Fortunately, given his circumstances, common sense kicked in.

"You're very good at finding new homes for your strays, aren't you?" he said.

"So it seems," she said, beaming.

"Sorry. Not this time. I don't have room in my apartment for a dog this size, and if those paws are the indicators they're supposed to be, Archie here is bound to get bigger. I may be moving soon, anyway."

"To Chesapeake Shores, not away," she said, as if it was a fact he'd already revealed. "You're going to be the new football coach."

Aidan just stared at her. "Are you psychic, too?"

"Nope, but the town loves its team, and the word on the street is that an ex-pro player is going to be coaching next season. Everyone has high hopes we'll stop being the laughingstock of the region. Since you look like a jock and you were standing out here admiring the stadium, I just put two and two together."

He gave her an amused look. "How does a jock look?"

Color tinted her cheeks. "You know, fit, well toned."

He laughed. "I see. Well, I am Aidan Mitchell," he confirmed. "And I'm interviewing for the job, but I don't have it yet."

"Oh, you'll get it," she said confidently. "Everyone's very excited. You'll be the second pro player in town. Of course, Mack Franklin grew up here, and he only played professionally for a season before becoming a sports columnist, but the town loves him. He started a local weekly newspaper a couple of years back. It's a very tough business, if you know anything about newspapers these days, but he's beaten the odds because it's the best way to find out what's going on in town." She paused for breath, then amended, "Aside from sitting in Sally's and listening to the gossip, anyway. At least Mack tries to bring some journalistic credibility into play."

After growing up in New York, Aidan was astonished by this insight into small-town ways. Or perhaps it was just Liz March, who chattered like a magpie. "Does Mack know that his competition is a local café?"

"Of course he does. Sally's his best source. But mostly he'd be the first to find out what's going on, anyway. He's married to an O'Brien, which makes him practically royalty in Chesapeake Shores."

Aidan instinctively stiffened at the comment, though he hoped she hadn't noticed. "Why is that?"

"You don't know the town's history?" she asked, looking startled.

"Is it a criteria for living here?" he asked, mostly in jest. "Do they give a test at the Realtor's office?"

"Not really," she said, apparently taking him seriously. "It's just a local legend, so people tend to know it. As I understand it, the land originally belonged to an O'Brien who came here straight from Ireland. His family farmed it for years. A couple of decades ago, three of his descendants—Mick, Jeff and Thomas O'Brien—built Chesapeake Shores from scratch on that land."

She paused for breath, then added, "Mick's the famous architect who designed the town. He might not be an elected official, but his word still carries a lot of weight around here. Jeff manages properties and sells real estate." Eyes twinkling, she gave Aidan a pointed look. "So it wouldn't really surprise me if he does spread the story himself, though I imagine he'd consider testing potential residents to be ill-mannered."

Aidan chuckled. "Touché."

"There's another brother, too. Thomas is a well-respected environmentalist who runs a foundation that fights to protect the bay."

Aidan's brain seemed to shut down at the casual mention of Thomas O'Brien. Maybe coming to Chesapeake Shores had been a huge mistake, after all, if just hearing that name made him flinch. He'd gotten a tip about the coaching job and been drawn here as if fate were stepping in, but now all he felt was the familiar bitterness and anger crawling up the back of his throat. That it might be unwarranted was a concept he struggled with from time to time.

He suddenly realized that Liz was studying him with a worried expression.

"Are you okay? Did I say something that upset you?"

"No, not a thing, I'm fine," Aidan assured her. "Thanks for the background information." He deliberately took a quick glance at his watch, then added, "I need to get going."

He turned and quickly walked off in the direction of his car.

"Aidan!" Liz's concerned voice carried on the breeze. "The school office is the other way."

He gave her a wave of acknowledgment and kept right on going, thankful there was no set time for his interview. He'd intentionally scheduled it that way, promising to call once he arrived in town and got settled into the room the school had reserved for him at The Inn at Eagle Point. Maybe after a shower and some food and a little more time to think about what he was doing, he'd be ready to make that call. Or maybe not.

It was a big decision, deciding whether to stay and take a risk, or go. If his friends could see him now, they'd be stunned by his indecisiveness.

On the field, he'd been a quick-thinking quarterback, reading a defense and making split-second adjustments that determined whether a play succeeded or failed. He hadn't struggled for even a minute with his decision to retire when he'd realized that an injury had slowed him down, ruining his effectiveness on the field. He'd always wanted to coach at the high school level. He'd gotten his teaching credentials in college in anticipation that this day would eventually come. At the end of his season last November following a second knee injury that had taken him out for the year, he'd made the call. Sure, it had come a lot sooner than he'd anticipated, but fate was funny that way. He wouldn't be one of those players who hung on past his expiration date.

But this decision? This was different. This was a twenty-eight-year-old man trying to decide not only whether a job and town might be a good fit but if the time was right to meet his biological father—Thomas O'Brien—for the very first time.

Liz held a cup of coffee in her hands to warm them as she sat in a booth at Sally's with Bree O'Brien Collins, who owned Flowers on Main, the store next door to hers. Bree was also a playwright who ran a local theater, but she still loved spending the occasional day making flower arrangements, especially for special occasions. Today she'd been so busy with the decorations for a baby shower that they'd postponed their morning coffee break until afternoon when Liz's high school helper could cover for her.

"I'm telling you, it was very strange," she told Bree. "We were just talking. I should say I was chattering away, filling him in on this and that." She regarded Bree with a rueful expression. "I really do have to stop doing that, going on and on, I mean."

Bree's grin suggested she was doing it again.

"Okay. Sorry. I'll get to the point. I promise. I'd tried to convince him to take Archie, but he wasn't interested. Then I admitted that I'd guessed who he was. We talked about the job for a couple of minutes, or maybe I did all the talking. Anyway, he took off, and not toward the school, as if he'd realized he was late for a meeting or something. He headed in the opposite direction."

"Well, that is weird," Bree said. "Maybe he doesn't like dogs. Archie is a sweetheart, but not everybody notices that when he's trying to herd them."

Liz chuckled. "Yes, I'm familiar with the reaction. The poor thing can't help himself, though. But the Archie issue was resolved. Aidan wasn't interested, and that was that for me. Pets belong with people who'll love and appreciate them. Actually I was filling him in on local history, how O'Briens built the town, when he got this kind of glazed look on his face, then took off."

"So you think his reaction had something to do with the O'Briens?" Bree asked, frowning.

"It felt that way, but how could that be it? Everybody loves your family."

Bree made a face. "That's a slight exaggeration. Dad's made his share of enemies over the years. Heck, for a long time, he didn't even get along all that well with his own brothers. He, Jeff and Thomas clashed over every detail when they were building the town. It's only recently, thanks to my grandmother's determination, that peace and family harmony have been mostly restored. If you force people to sit around the same table on Sunday long enough, sooner or later they have to start talking civilly. I doubt Nell envisioned just how long that process would take, though."

Liz nodded distractedly. She was still perplexed by Aidan's behavior. "Then I must have misread his reaction," she said eventually. "I guess we'll see when word spreads about whether he's taken the job at the high school."

"Well, whatever Aidan feels about the O'Briens, it's one-sided," Bree said. "Dad is determined to get him hired as the coach. He practically handpicked him from the list of candidates, so there's no bad blood there, at least on his side. And you know Mick O'Brien. When he wants something, he usually gets it."

Bree sat back and studied Liz with a speculative expression. "So, what was he like? Aidan, I mean."

Liz blushed under the friendly scrutiny. "I suppose he was good-looking in that well-built, jock way." She wished she hadn't noticed just how toned and fit he seemed to be, or the way his eyes had sparked with wit, or the dimple that occasionally appeared in his cheek when he was teasing her.

"In other words, you wouldn't kick him out of bed," Bree concluded.

Liz frowned at the lighthearted remark. "I wouldn't let him in my bed," she corrected, though she hoped he wouldn't make a liar of her. She had a feeling he could. To bolster her resolve she reminded both of them, "It's way too soon for me to be even thinking like that."

Down by the Bay
By wogan
The Chesapeake novels pull you into their characters and this book - the newest in this series is no exception. The personalities are believable and the reader quickly comes to know them.
The town of Chesapeake Shores is so filled with the O'Brien family that one wishes there would be a family tree to remind even previous readers of who is who and what their relationship is to each other. However Sherryl Woods does a good job in explaining as the storyline progresses. A first time reader would not be lost.

This specific plot lies with 2 people with deep secrets. Aidan, a former NFL football star comes to town to coach the losing high school team and to see who his real father is. Liz is a widow whose husband had broken her heart and she wants to put that former life behind her. We all know where this is going to go, but the joy is in seeing how it gets there.
The O'Briens are a caring, loving and meddlesome family and they do not change their ways as far as Aidan and Liz are concerned. We learn Aidan's secret almost right away, but Liz's secret has only hints along the way at the depth of her hurt.

This is a story that can touch your emotions too. Even the minor characters, such as the adopted son who makes team captain are well drawn out. One can feel his joy and surprise. There is a depth here, which is not found in many romance stories and makes one want to come back to Chesapeake shores again and again.

I love this series and hope she never ends it
By GloballyUniquePaula
Sherryl Woods books always make me laugh, cry, and smile. This one is no exception. I find myself in the story, yelling at the characters as if I were there. You just have to root for Liz and Aidan and hope they get together in the end. I love this series and hope she never ends it. If you haven't read this series or this author, you need to do so. Her stories are heart-warming and funny. This is one of my fave series and I always wait with bated breath for the next one to come out.

Pleasant return to Chesapeake Shores
By Beth Settje
Both predictable and at times, unexpected, Dogwood Hill continues the Chesapeake Shores series in this newest installment. It is made very clear from the first few pages which two characters would be the primary focus of the novel. In fact, there is a reference to the fact that since the original family's adult children have all been married off, as well as their cousins, the father of said family would have to put his meddling ways onto these two individuals. This is the predictable part.

As Aidan and Liz discover and admit to their attraction to one another, they each have to face some significant facts from their pasts before they can move forward. Woods draws it out to a fulfilling conclusion, though I think the book could have been a little shorter. The other aspect that I did not like was the formulaic aspect; I did expect it, as that is part of the charm of reading the series. Sometimes you just want to read a book and not have to second guess everything. However, it was so blatant that the two would be in denial for much of the book, only to give in toward the end. Again, another reference to this point was made by one of the characters. If the author calls it out, what does that say about the plot?

Overall, there were a few unexpected turns of events, as we learn about both Liz and Aidan's secrets. They were dribbled out slowly and were worth waiting for. When we learn the surprises and how people handle the information, it is significant and relevant. Woods made the characters have real flaws, which made the book that much more interesting. I also liked how many of the characters from earlier books in the series were so prominently featured. So if this is your first time finding a Chesapeake Shores Novel, I suggest you start at the beginning, so you don't have a bunch of spoilers. If you are a fan of the series, you will enjoy the updates on favorites and how the two new characters fit into the big picture.

Disappointed and feeling cheated.
By Carolyn C
I really like Suzan Tisdale's writing style, distinctive and very likable characters. Normally she is a five star for me, but this time I felt cheated. With this book, there was no ending! Readers are just left hanging. The last chapter was labeled a prologue and publishing date. This is no series or trilogy in the normal sense of the word. It's just a book cut into thirds, one third for January, one for February and one for March. Don't get me wrong, the story is worth reading, but a word to the wise would be to wait until all three are published before purchasing. Splitting the story this way is not fair to loyal fans.

Why? Would you release book one without thinking about how the reader would feel frustrated just hanging and not in a good way!!
By s dee
I hate it that it just ended right in the part of the story where it pulled you in. I dislike authors that do this!!!! You feel cheated. I have liked her previous series and am really disappointed with this unfinished book one of the trilogy.

I simply love Suzan Tisdale
By Donna Porter
It really pains me to write this review. I have even put it off for days.

I simply love Suzan Tisdale. I have reviewed every book she has written. (You can find reviews previous to my posting them here at Roses and Thorns Reviews at my website.) She has grown in leaps and bounds as a writer from her first book, Laiden’s Daughter, to her latest book, Caelen’s Wife, A Murmur of Providence. Her previous book, Frederick’s Queen, is at the top of my all-time favorite list.

The author tried something different with Caelen’s Wife. In an effort to create shorter books she decided to publish this book in three installments. In an ever changing publishing world, we all have to take risks now and then. In this case, it did not pay off.

Caelen’s Wife did not grab my attention as quickly as some of her previous books, but I have a lot going on right now and I am not certain anything would have grabbed it too quickly. It is well written. The plot is tight and moves along. The characters of Fiona and Caelen are well drawn, as all Tisdales’ characters generally are. As it rolls along, it begins to pick up.

Unfortunately, it picks up and then it is at its end.

And I have to wait until February to read the second part.

One of the biggest reason readers read is to get a payoff at the end of a book and a resolution, hopefully a “happily ever after.” This is sort of an “unwritten contract” readers and writers engage in. To not make good on that contract is a violation of the trust between author and reader. This book did not deliver on that unspoken contract. (I am not speaking here of trilogies with clearly solved problems at the end and hints of new ones to come in the next book.)

Now, I knew going into it there would be three books. (Tisdale did a great job letting everyone know this was what she was doing.) I did not realize, though, that it would literally cut me off at the knees just when the story started rolling.

I admit, I was frustrated. By the time I get to the second and then third book, I will have lost my momentum and my connection with the characters. While that is sometimes the case with a trilogy, they SHOULD be constructed in such a way as to weave the past books into the present to catch the reader up. This book is not being written that way.

I love Suzan. She is one of the finest people you will meet. She can weave a story like few others I know, and she genuinely cares about pleasing her readers and giving them an enjoyable book. Caelen’s Wife is written in typical Tisdale style, complete with a hunky Scotsman, a woman who needs her hunk but doesn’t know it (or refuses to admit it), an unknown enemy, and all the tartan, sheep, claddaghs, and sgian-dubhs you could ask for. However, I have to recommend to readers that you simply wait until all three books are out so you can read them in succession.

Three stars, the only flaw being I have to wait for the next one, but that's a biggie . . .

"Fake is packed with actions, but lack of character developments"
By Lucy @ Rain & Cupcakes book blog
Although this all started out because Corey, in actuality Corey (or any of the boys) was hardly in the book. Then when Corey was brought up to date, it took him very little effort to solved the problem. Which make me wonder, if Kayli and the boys have told Corey the whole truth from the beginning, perhaps less people would be injured, kidnapped, and Kayli weren't need to spend the entire book running around in circle.

Normally I love how long the book of the series were, however since Fake has focused entirely on the mystery solving, which could've been an interesting story, except I've thought it was overloaded with unessential information, which made this book seem long and dull. To be honest, I couldn't quite connect with the story, and didn't particularly enjoyed this book as much as the previous two. In the end, I thought Fake pretty much has a repeating theme as Thief, where Kayli running around trying to solve the mystery and saving the academy boys. She also brought back Blake, and honestly that was the better part of the book.

This book has left me with many questions, like how did the bad guys managed to break into the apartment, snatched two people without anyone notice and got away with it. And why didn't the academy boys worked as a team when Kayli escaped. I thought their reasons seem weak and illogical to me, and it goes against everything the Academy supposedly stands for, to always work as a team.

In a way Kayli seem to have an incredible good luck, as well as more resourceful than the academy boys. After escaping from her kidnappers, Kayli have managed to find a cab driver that happened to be one of her old classmate, whom helped Kayli unconditionally throughout the book. While in the most part of the book, the academy boys didn't do much to help at all. Which bring me to another question, in Fake, the boys seem lost, unorganized and was frankly a disappointment. Rather focus more on the boys, the book has introduced a new character (Kayli's old classmate), and brought back Blake and his tech guy, whom by the way showed more character than the boys in Fake. Whatever happened to the Academy boys that I love to read about? And how on earth did the bad guys managed to get away with roomful of Academy's people? I have no clue.

At book number three of the series, I am still unsure about Kayli, she is flaky, contradicted, and plain annoying. Once again she spend the entire book undecided what she should do with the boys. Sure, she'll trust Blake, but when it comes to to the boys, she'll question everything. Which was pretty much the same thing she did in the last book, so nothing changed.

Overall, I didn't think the series advance much if at all after this book, there were no major story progress, and the lack of character and relationship building were a major setback. I also failed to see how the events took place in this book connect to the series as a whole. I was mostly disappointed to see there were very little interactions between Kayli and the academy boys. I thought this book was lacking the most important element of the series, the academy boys.

Base on Thief and Fake, I feel The Scarab Beetle series are focus more solely on Kayli, where the academy boys seem to fade into the background. At this point I am still undecided how I feel about the series, I might read the next book, only because I want to read more about the boys. But I am hoping to see a better balance on the actions, and the character buildings in the next book of the series.

Happy Reading!! XO

What The What?!?!?!
By CJ
I'm sorry to say that this book was a waste of my time and money. To me this was a horrible plot and the development of these characters were nonexistent. These people are supposed to be a bit older, between 18 and early 20's but they act like they're in middle school. If they were "trained" by an super secret academy and trained in weapons and hand to hand combat for years, then how could they be taken so easily? Not only that, what detective/spy/combat skills does Kayli have to contribute to this team? She just rushes into situations without thinking and gets easily distracted by thinking about the boys feelings or her feelings. This book has older people in it so it should have more innuendos than the GB series, more realistic responses and actions to violent situations (if Kayli is getting involved with the boys work, then she should be trained instead of fixing houses) and more honest connections within the characters (when real hard life situations happens to young kids they tend to mature faster so why is she holding back her feelings like she's 13?). Lastly, we know her brother is tied to the other GB series and can't give away spoilers but you can't tell me that with the resources the academy has (and the computer/genius hacker) they can't find out where her brother is? They spot him at school but she can't approach him? Kayli barely listens to anyone and goes around half-cocked most of the time and your telling me that she just isn't going to try and see her brother to get an explanation? At least give some closure to Will's character from the GB series and bring him fully into the SB series. There are two many distracting situations in this book. It was severely drawn out and unexciting. This series is similar to the GB series but with older characters so these story lines and plots should be a bit more dramatic and racy. I like the other books but this published work has severely gone downhill. I think that c.l. stone needs to get a new team to read the rough drafts because somebody is being a "Yes Man" in their publishing camp and it is not doing the devoted readers any favors. *side note* at about 84% of the way through a white highlighted background appears behind the text if your reading in black, sepia or green. Of course if you're reading in white it won't show.

A Step Backwards, Instead of Forward
By Redwithabook
There is so much I love about this series and was anxiously awaiting it's release. However, this book seemed like a step back instead of a step forward. Kayli's indecisive nature really started to irk me. I was anxiously awaiting more development in her complicated love life only to be disappointed with her acting like an ostrich and sticking her head in the sand. I wanted development! Intstead, I got a drawn out overly complicated mystery that was not connected to the one of where is Will which would have been more intresting.I rate is as three stars because there were parts I quite enjoyed. However, this book solved nothing and could almost be skipped because it was mostly filler.

Too Many Questions...No Answers
By Lisa Kane
3.5 Stars

I read a review copy of Never Never going in blind, with no idea of the storyline, having avoided other reviews. I had no preconceived expectations other than knowing it was co-written by two authors whose work I adore. It is a cute, quick read and to say it ends in a cliffy is the understatement of the decade, kind of like calling Mount Everest a hill . I felt very frustrated while reading this book, my one track guy mind analogy is like expecting hot, intense uninhibited sex and getting a quick peck on the cheek. Here’s why-while there are lots and lots of questions there is not One. Single. Answer.

I have no problem with cliffy’s at all but give me something . If even just a few of my questions had been answered by the end I would have at least felt a little better but it wasn’t “ in the cards “

“This card” she says slowly, “ is your outcome card. Combined with the other cards in the reading, this gives you the answer to why you are here.” She flips the card over. The woman doesn’t move. Her eyes are locked on the card beneath her fingertips. I look down at the outcome card. There are no words on it. No title. No picture. The card is blank.

Charlie (short for Charlize ) and Silas are two high schoolers that suddenly in the middle of class have no idea who they are. The memories they had of themselves and all of the relationships in their lives are wiped clean. They do have some random recall for things like the password for a laptop, names of celebrities, words to songs etc. They quickly realize that they are both in this predicament together and were a long time couple before this happened to them. They set out to find out all they can about themselves but once they do , will they like the people they were? What about the relationships they had with their parents, siblings, friends? What would they change; in the end- would they still be a couple ?

As the investigation to uncover who they are progresses, Charlie and Silas find out many disturbing things going on that their current “born again minds” find hard to believe. Things about the riffs that exist in their families, and some ugly truths about their parents. But some of the harshest truths are about themselves and the things they’ve done behind each other’s backs.

But just as we begin to get close to some answers, something happens and whatever progress they had, will amount to nothing. I enjoy a good mystery, but this book has too many questions, and no answers. Although I felt no real connection with these characters the story itself did provide some entertainment. There were parts I enjoyed and for that reason I would still give it 3.5 stars.

“I close my eyes and pull away from her. I run my hands through her hair, the frustration of the day catching up to me. I can make light of it all with my jokes. I can dismiss her theories – from tarot readings to fairy tales – simply because it doesn’t make sense to me. But she’s right. None of this makes sense. And the more we try to uncover the mystery, the more I feel like we’re wasting our damn time.”

It's something new, something different, something that's never, never been done before.
By Jessica Sotelo (Angie & Jessica's Dreamy Reads)
Let's face it, this story is as highly anticipated for it's mysterious storyline as it is for it's powerhouse writing team. Everyone wants to know what a Colleen Hoover - Tarryn Fisher love child will look like. Well, now I know. And I'm here to tell you, their baby is weird. I don't know what to name it, how to describe what it looks like, what color hat to put on it, or where it's going to sleep. This baby shall remain naked and nameless... at least until it's siblings are born.

The story keeps you guessing. It's hard to box this story, this baby, into a genre until you know the outcome, an outcome we don't get in this installment. Whatever THIS is, could be anything. Is it a dream? Is it a fairytale? Is this a result of illness, or medication, or drugs? Are they just crazy? Are they test subjects in a science experiment? Who are these people and how'd this happen? The questions only mount as the story unfolds. So is this paranormal? I've no idea. Is it sci-fi? Not a clue. Is it a metaphysical psychological mystery suspense young adult romance? Perhaps. My advice? Don't try to put this story into a box. It doesn't fit in one and you'll diminish the integrity of the story by attempting it. And the weird baby doesn't need you dressing it up in an outfit that doesn't fit.

Overall, I felt captivated. I felt intrigued. I felt consumed. I felt mystified, stupified, confused. This story is nothing at all what I expected. I can't really say what I expected, but it wasn't this. It's mind boggling. It's outside the box. It's not typical of Colleen Hoover or Tarryn Fisher, in my humble opinion. It's something new, something different, something that's never, never been done before. I guessed. I theorized. And I came up blank. I have no idea where this is going, and I can't wait to continue the story to find out.

The sequel to Never Never is now my most anticipated novel this year!
By Robin Segnitz
Colleen Hoover recently shared on a blog post how a writing partnership was formed between herself and Tarryn Fisher. Colleen began by explaining she had an idea she had been considering for a novel. She shared her idea with Tarryn. Tarryn loved the idea and encouraged Colleen to begin writing the story. Colleen remained busy with other commitments, so Tarryn decided to write a first chapter and email it to Colleen. Colleen enjoyed reading the chapter so much that she decided to write a second chapter and sent it back to Tarryn. New chapters continued to be written. They were enjoying themselves. All I can say is thank goodness they decided to publish this story!

This review will not contain spoilers beyond what the authors have previously chosen to share. But I will share a glimpse of how this special story begins. Imagine you suddenly become aware of your surroundings. You remember nothing of the moment before. You don't know your name or what you look like or where you are. You have no recollection of your past. Silas Nash and Charlie Wynwood both experience this in Never Never. It doesn't take long for Silas and Charlie to meet and realize they are both in the same predicament. Why did this happen to them? How do they remember? And what do they mean to each other?

Here are some details I feel comfortable sharing about this story. The events of Never Never take place in New Orleans, Louisiana. Our main characters are in high school. The chapters for the male protagonist, Silas Nash, are written by Colleen Hoover. The chapters for the female protagonist, Charlie Wynwood, are written by Tarryn Fisher. It's young adult fiction. It's a drama full of mystery and intrigue, where every answer they uncover leads to more questions. It's thrilling. Romantic. There is even a paranormal aspect to this story, although I haven't quite figured that part out. That's because the story is not quite finished. Colleen confirmed there is more of the story to be written on her recent blog post.

Even though this novel has been written by two authors, I feel the story flowed seamlessly. Any differences in writing style felt completely natural to me. After all, Silas and Charlie have different personalities. I immediately felt an affinity for Silas and Charlie. I guess you could say that I fell in love with these characters. I'm pretty sure I feel this way because Silas and Charlie bear a distinct resemblance to two of my favorite fictional characters. And Charlie also reminds me of one of my favorite authors.

I love mystery mixed with my romance. I love piecing together puzzles. But this novel left me reeling! I was wide awake into the night considering all of the possibilities for this story. What could possibly be happening to Silas and Charlie? What clues have I missed? I promise that I have lost sleep over this novel, and I could probably discuss theories for days!

Parts of this story are seriously funny! I laughed out loud on many occasions, and I'm pretty sure I had a smile on my face the entire time I was reading Never Never. I found myself on a collision course with the last page of the novel. I devoured each page with gusto. It's like Tarryn Fisher and Colleen Hoover wrote the perfect novel for me. They have me hoping for a fairytale outcome for Silas and Charlie. The sequel to Never Never has become my most anticipated novel for this year. Congratulations go out to Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher for this epic 6-star novel!
