Prologue

Gage Dixon strained against the heavy barbell, relishing the resistance as the stacked metal plates on either end of the solid steel bar made the whole thing flex. The bar quivered slightly as it reached that sweet spot of the lift where his pecs stopped doing all the work and his triceps and shoulders kicked in. But he'd already been punishing his body for over an hour, and this time the bar momentarily stopped moving upward, gravity insisting that down would be a much better-and easier-direction to go.

He grit his teeth, let out a growl, and forced his muscles to keep pushing until his arms locked out straight. He racked the load with a clatter of metal on metal. Even then, the bar still bowed and flexed-loading 525 pounds on a barbell would do that.

Gage sat up and looked around the small weight room he and the other members of the Dallas Police SWAT Team had set up. It wouldn't measure up to any of the fancy gyms in the area, but considering they'd paid out of their own pockets for the mirrors, heavy-duty lifting equipment, and free weights, it wasn't too shabby. It would have been nice if it were bigger, though. The presence of the four other men reminded him just how small the room was.

Then again, his men made most rooms seem small-special weapons and tactics teams tended to attract big, muscular men, and his particular team happened to be bigger than most. No surprise there either-alpha werewolves were always big as hell.

Gage wiped the sweat off his face with the back of his arm and took a moment to appreciate the relative peace and quiet. Regardless of the room's size, it was rare for there to be only a handful of men in it. But with half the team out helping run weapon qualifications at the police academy and most of the others out conducting joint training with the ATF, the compound was practically empty.

Across the room, Diego Martinez spotted for his best friend and teammate, Hale Delaney, as the man tried to go for a personal record on the other bench press. At the same time, Gage's two assistant squad leaders, Mike Taylor and Xander Riggs, were hanging upside down from the ceiling-mounted chin-up bars, seeing who could do the most crunches. Alphas didn't need much of an excuse to turn everything they did into a competition.

They hadn't gotten around to cutting an opening for the air-conditioning units they'd bought for the room yet, so it was pretty warm. Which meant that all of them were sweating like crazy even though they weren't wearing shirts.

Gage was wondering if he should spring for some gym towels when he heard the sound of fast-moving boots coming down the hallway.

The other werewolves' keen hearing had also picked up the sound, and everyone was looking toward the doorway expectantly by the time McCall poked his head around the corner.

"Got a bad one, Sergeant," he said to Gage. "Hostage situation over on Belmont. Multiple injuries, at least two dozen hostages. Five shooters being reported."

"Well, there goes the workout," Delaney muttered, getting up from the bench.

Gage stood. "Five shooters, huh?"

At McCall's nod, Gage glanced at his two assistant squad leaders. "You two mind doing some entry work for a change while I run the show?"

"Hell, no," they said in unison, excitement clear on their faces, even though they were still hanging upside down. Kids-they're so easily excitable. Mike and Xander jumped down, joining Martinez and Delaney. Sweat was still running down their bodies, but they were eagerly awaiting his next order.

"Then gear up," Gage ordered. "I want us out of here in less than five minutes."

The four men cleared the room in seconds, leaving Gage with his weapon's expert. "Sorry," he told McCall, "but you're stuck here on the phones until we get some people back."

McCall grumbled-none of them liked to pull desk duty when there was a mission to do instead. But McCall knew it had to be done. "I'll get Martinez's and Delaney's assault weapons out for them" was all he said as he left.

Gage was only thirty seconds behind the rest of the team, but by the time he got to the second floor of the admin building, the other four men were already gearing up. He joined them as they yanked on navy blue T-shirts, matching military-style uniforms, and black boots. Then came the heavy black Kevlar vests, with tactical web pouches attached. The sounds of Velcro being yanked open filled the room as they adjusted their vests, ammo pouches, and holsters to a snug fit. The gear wasn't the most comfortable stuff to wear, especially during the hot Texas summers, but it came with being in SWAT.

McCall met them heading down the stairs, tossing Martinez and Delaney their military grade M4 carbines, while giving Gage more details on the situation. The kidnappers were serious-there were cops and civilians already on the way to the hospital in serious condition.

As they moved outside, Gage's men carefully checked their weapons, yanking slides and bolts back to inspect chambers, then dropping magazines and clips to check their loads before slamming them in with a firm click.

While they'd been working out in the weight room, there had been a lighthearted sense of competition about them. They'd even joked and laughed while they'd gotten dressed. But as they moved toward the operations vehicle and the white SUV that McCall had ready and running for them, the tone had changed. A charged intensity filled the air, the kind you sometimes feel right before lightning strikes.

They were heading out to face a group of men who'd already shown a willingness to shoot cops and innocents. They likely wouldn't hesitate to shoot a SWAT officer, given the chance.

Everyone turned to look at Gage just before climbing into the vehicles. He glanced at his watch-barely over three minutes since the call had come in. Good.

"We're going in a little undermanned on this one," he announced, though it wasn't something that needed to be said. "There's a department negotiator heading for the scene, and we'll give him every chance to get control of this situation. You heard what McCall said, so you know as well as I do how this one is likely going to turn out. These men are killers, so if we have to go in, don't take any chances. Hit them hard and fast, and let's get everyone out of there alive and in one piece-us included."

With that, Gage climbed into the passenger seat of the white SUV, and Martinez had it moving for the gates before he even got his seat belt on.

3.5 stars for a promising werewolves new series
By Isabelle morebooksthanlivros
Romantic suspense with werewolves! Yes sign me in, please!

Mac is a journalist after a break out story of the "dream team" of Dallas. Everyone thinks they are perfect, but she knows there is something dirty in this. Gage is the captain of his pack and he is trying to protect them all by watching out Mac. In the middle of it all, there is the mob guy after the team looking for revenge. Will they survive it all?

Ok! I'm a characters type of reader. I enjoy meeting them, befriending them, connecting with them and even love them a little. When you are offer a group of SIXTEEN alpha werewolves to read about, what is not to like?

I really like Gage and I've like Mac almost until the end. Yeah, she had to have her TSTL moment at the end.

But, the most interesting thing about Hungry Like The Wolf is the werewolves world the author has created. It's different than the usual. I love shifters, it's my favorite type of read. It's very refreshing when you can be surprise, in a good way, and see something different. The author has masterfully created her wolves connected to the real world. They first shift because of tension and they are mostly attracted to the smell of things.

Because I enjoy shifters so much I miss reading more about their world in this book. It ended up being more suspense than paranormal. It was good, but it could have been wonderful with a deeper immersion on the paranormal side of things.

The plot is good, and I think this is a very promising new series. Characters are really great, and there are several secondary characters that could be explore in a future book. The passionate scenes were HOT HOT HOT and there are lots of them. But the end, ah the end, really threw me for a loop and have me lowering my rating. I won't say much about it, but to say I didn't agree with Mac's choices and I've hated her for a few minutes too much at the end.

You MAY read this book because you love werewolves; you SHOULD read this book if you like to get hot and bother from all the steamy scenes of a book; but you MUST read this book if you are into hot, dangerous alpha males that can become a bit furry!

So many absolutely amazing bits and then a heroine who nearly ruined it all.
By Anna's herding cats
There were so many fantastic things about Hungry like the Wolf. But one big issue kept this book from knocking it out for me and oh made me so angry. And that was...the heroine.

She's a reporter and when things kicked off I wasn't sure about her and her motivations. Trying to uncover the secret behind the SWAT team--she's sure they're on drugs or something--and exposing them for what they are even though they do an amazing job and everyone adores them. But she wants THAT story and puts herself in danger to get it.

Leaving that behind as the guys bring her in to look around I started to warm up to her. I loved the guys. A whole lotta delicious Alpha males of the wolfy variety. They're fun and hot and work well together. Lots of sexy happening and they start to win her over. It's really fun seeing them all together, becoming friends, the guys going out on calls, etc.

And I'm loving the writing. Tyler has a way of pulling you in completely and making it impossible to put down the book.

But then...Mac nearly ruined it all for me. We'd been at a solid 4-4.5 stars. And then Mac fell back on the stereotypical reporter attitude of the story being the most important thing no matter that it would destroy lives of good men and their families. But it would make her career!! She became that idealistic everyone should know and it'll be fine type of heroine. She loves these people and is willing to betray them in the worst possible way...for a story. For getting ahead in her career. And that's basically when I lost this book. I nearly through my kindle across the room I was so angry. Especially when she goes into tears after someone else pointed out her error in judgement and a few bats of her eyes and all is forgiven. It just didn't work for me.

So three stars. The rest of the book was fantastic. I'll definitely read more from Tyler and think the set up for the series--a wolf based SWAT team--was amazing. I was just so disappointed in the route the heroine was taken.

If quality PNR is your kryptonite then this is where it’s at
By RabidReads
Nothing starts a new year off right quite like a debut werewolf series, and Paige Tyler brings it with SWAT. There are sixteen alpha males to choose from, so you’re sure to find at least one to drool over, and first in line is their smexy leader, Gage Dixon. HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF was light on shifter lore, but heavy on scorching romps which makes it the perfect read for Paranormal Romance groupies looking for a bit of danger, and a whole lot of steam. The story was predictable, and insta-love goes hand-in-hand with this genre, so if you’re expecting something other than entertaining fluff you should probably keep walking, however if quality PNR is your kryptonite then this is where it’s at.

This is essentially Romantic Suspense with a supernatural slant, and I loved how Tyler combined the two! The very notion that a team of smokin’ hot werewolf officers are protecting the citizens of Dallas was enough to make me one-click this title. There’s just something about a man in uniform that lights my fire, and if you throw in fur I’m done for. The plot wasn’t that difficult to figure out, but still interesting enough to keep me turning the pages at a quick pace. SWAT kills a mob boss’ son during a hostage situation, the king pin is now out for blood, and all the while Mackenzie Stone is trying to prove that the city’s golden boys aren’t as clean as they appear to be. I’ll leave it to you to fill-in the rest.

I was let down by the were aspects of this story line; other than knowing from page one that the characters are no ordinary cops, the author doesn’t dig any further into that aspect until much later, and even then very sparingly. I liked that the mates lingo was replaced by The One, that their first change is brought on by a high-stress, life-threatening situation instead of the usual puberty / bite / full moon, and that the author focused on scent. However, other than those three elements, plus a brief mention of DNA and babies, that’s pretty much all of the werewolf mythology that this novel had to offer. Do they HAVE to change? Are there females? I could have done with one less sex scene, and more deets.

The attraction between Mac & Gage was immediate, but their love was not; granted the latter did happen in under a week which is to be expected whenever a HEA occurs in one installment. They had great chemistry, and their sex marathons will make you wish that you had a member of the Special Wolf Team Alpha at your beck and call. I had to roll my eyes when Stone exposed Dixon’s secret, and did exactly what you’d expect a journalist to do—pick the story over the man—only to later regret her decision, and crawl back begging forgiveness. Of course Gage accepts her apology, she joins the Pack, and everything is hunky-dory after that. I was just hoping for a little twist. Still, their tale was a cute one.

A seductive book filled with peril and romance; HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF was yummilicious!
