Too much woe is me.......

I enjoyed the author's last couple of books, so I was really looking forward to this one. I even preordered the book. Unfortunately, the book was a DNF for me. I got to the middle and skimmed to the end. Ugh. What a douche bag hero. He keeps playing at being noble by pushing his wife, aka heroine, away from him for her own good because he is blind. First he pretends to be dead. Then he wants a divorce. When he finds out she is pregnant, he wants her to leave their home. All of his actions are done in the name of love? The hero continues to push and the determined heroine pushes back. This tug of war pattern continues throughout the story. This hero's "woe is me" and the heroine's "I will fight for our marriage" recurring theme got extremely tiring by the middle of the book and this ping pong action was definitely not romantic. I wanted the hero to carry some of the burden of fighting for their marriage. The hero does not have an epiphany until the very end of the book. The light bulb flickers on when his friend shares with him his story of the love of his life. He redeems himself at the end, but there wasn't much of a story left to pursue at that point.
Ideally, I thought the heroine should have taken the hero's advice and got herself another hero. The new hero would be handicapped. She would fall in love and marry him. They would live in the same town as the old hero. Their marriage would show the hero what marriage vows really entailed...and what he lost. Oh well, so much for the rewrite.

Not my hero

I really liked the heroine Lady Marion. She was super sweet and forgiving towards Tristan and his decisions. She had bigger balls than Tristan when it came to facing his blindness. She was so happy when Tristan came back, it broke my heart to see him deny her over and over.
Tristan… well, I just wanted to slap him. Hard. I mean, to some extent I could understand his feelings regarding his blindness. I can only imagine what it must be like to go blind and feel like all your plans are useless now. But the thing is, those plans didn’t die, they just changed. That was the thing that bothered me the most about Tristan. To him, his life was over, but he just didn’t want to see that everyone around was willing to help him achieve his dreams and form new ones. I understand that accepting his new reality took time, but after everyone around him did accept him, he just came off as a whiny little boy. I gave him a chance to get over his hang ups, but he just kept disappointing me.
Like I said above, I loved Marion and by the end, I felt she deserved SO much better than the idiot she unfortunately loved. :-(

A good read

This is book 4 in the Marriage Mart Mayhem series.
Lady Marion Tunstall has been mourning her husband for two years and is finally ready to re-enter society. Having decided to go to a country dance she is shocked to see her not so dead husband and faints dead away.
Lord Tristan Tunstall never planned to let his wife know he was alive. Having become blind in battle, he believes that his wife is better off without him. When he tries to dissolve the marriage, Marion refuses. She wants her husband no matter that he is blind. They married through sickness and health!
Can Marion convince Tristan that their marriage is worth saving?
I loved Marion! Here is a woman who has spent 2 years grieving for the love of her life. She is finally ready to go out into society and what happens? Her not so dead husband.
Tristan on the other hand was another story. I just couldn't like him. He claims to love his wife as much as he ever did, but refuses to stay married to her. He believes that he can't be the kind of husband and father that Marion needs him to be. I honestly feel like he was just feeling sorry for himself and then he made life decisions for both him and Marion. Which in any loving, committed relationship (which he supposedly had with Marion), you just don't do.
Tristan did redeem himself a little at the end of the story, but I still didn't like him much. I'm giving this book 3 stars because I really did enjoy Marion.
