Revealing Ruby by Lavinia Kent

A very sensual erotic story, set during the Regency period, this is a novella in Lavinia Kent’s Bound and Determined series. Set around a brothel, this is a story featuring Madame Rouge—Ruby.
Ruby was once Emma, a young woman whose mother was mistress to an aristocrat. When her mother died, her father paid her off to leave him alone forever, so she took the money and purchased a brothel. It brings in a good income in the better neighborhood of Mayfair in London where many an aristocratic gentleman enjoys a discreet visit.
The story opens on a cozy scene where we learn that Ruby enjoys peace and quiet, tea and a good book, when she’s not busy with the business side of things. She encounters an angry and very handsome patron, Captain Derek Price, whom Ruby watched enjoy himself immensely though a peephole the night before. She soothes him with tea, tarts, and sexual innuendo-laced conversation and he’s appeased and attracted to her. Ruby recalls Derek as the man with the very impressive dragon tattoo across a very important part of his well-endowed anatomy.
She invites him back for the evening to resolve his dispute and then, discarding her Ruby facade, she becomes plain and simple Emma. She seduces Derek and they enjoy a night of intense passion that is described graphically but tastefully. During the evening, they also engage in provocative and revealing conversation that exposes some of their darkest secrets. There is a cliffhanger ending and there is more than enough to whet the appetite for future stories.
Lavinia Kent writes with great passion and clarity. As in the first story in the series, she successfully combines substance with smut, but it’s the very best kind. The kind that is written well and keeps you turning the pages, that makes you care for the characters, that arouses as well as engages.
A very sexy and engrossing novella. Kent is on my must read list.

Great Start!...Warning It Ends on a Cliffhanger

THE STORY: Ruby aka Madam Rouge is the madame of a brothel. She is called upon to deal with a dissatisfied customer. Captain Derek Price was a man with an intriguing dragon tattoo who attracted Ruby when she watched him with one of her house girls the night before. She spent more time than required checking on him. Derek is on his way to a marriage that will help his family but that he doesn't want. When he sees Ruby he wants her, but she insists that she doesn't take lovers from her brothel's clients. The intense attraction between Ruby and Derek is not something either really wants to walk away from.
OPINION: This is a hot little story. These are two people who do not want any intimacy from their relationship and yet cannot help but find kindred souls in one another. The story is intriguing in that the author is able to provide much insight about the characters while the focus of this novella is on the sexual relationship between the characters. In the same way that the relationship between Ruby and Derek is really more than sex even while they deny it, this book is more than the sexual acts that are depicted therein. I was glad that this novella did not end with a quick pat happily ever after because both Ruby and Derek have deep complications in their lives, but I will be seriously annoyed if there is not a resolution to their story in a future book.
WORTH MENTIONING: Readers should note that this novella ends on a cliffhanger and the relationship between Ruby and Derek is not resolved by the end of the novella. Although there is no explicit indication that there will be future installments of their story, I hope these two will end up with a happy ending.
FINAL DECISION: I was very intrigued by this novella. I found Ruby and Derek to be interesting characters and I was intrigued by the beginning of their story. I would give this a lower rating if I didn't believe that there is more to come of their story.
CONNECTED BOOKS: REVEALING RUBY is a novella in the Bound and Determined series. This novella can be read independent of the first book.

Revealing Ruby, is a seductive, erotic historical romance novella. Madame (Ruby) Rogue owns one of the finest establishments (brothel) in London. One fine day, a handsome American sailor Captain Derek Price presents himself and are
immediately attractive to each other.
"It was him, the man with the dragon. The man who'd left her feeling so unsettled and wanting. Her eyes swept down his body."
Derek has an enchanting sinful, fascinating Dragon tattoo and...Will they give in to their desires or break all their self imposed rules? Will they find true love? He has a secret.
"Emma still dreamed of a home of her own, a man of her own, a man who she feared would look remarkably like Derek in all her futures dreams."
In closing, Derek is upon his horse deep in thought contemplating his future. Perhaps there may be a final book for Madame Ruby Rogue (Emma) and Derek.
Writing proceeded flawlessly with the plot and character development. A passion filled, breath-taking Regency read.
Definitely recommend to romance lovers seeking something different and unique to read.
