I didn't like it. I almost abandoned it fairly quickly

This is the first book by Helenkay Dimon that I've read. I thought it sounded interesting and the reviews seemed decent.
I didn't like it. I almost abandoned it fairly quickly, but i hate doing that. So, it took me almost a week to read it.
The first chapter seemed promising with Ford Decker and his team on a mission that goes wrong. I liked seeing how Ford interacted with his team and I was curious as to how they were set up to fail.
Chapter 2, we meet the heroine Shay Alexander. It is revealed that Ford and Shay have been involved for 3 weeks already. By not seeing how they met, I felt that I was missing something. I actually had to look up whether this was the first book in the series or not. By the end of the chapter, they are heading for the bedroom.
I feel like the romance between Ford and Shay is nonexistant. It seems like all they do is have sex. Oh..wait, they did try to have a date but cut it short when Shay wanted to go home and have sex. After the second sex scene, I skipped the rest. Because there didn't seem to be anything else to their romance, I didn't care whether they worked out their relationship at the end or not.
I didn't like Shay..I thought she was a boring character. She doesn't have friends or hobbies apparently. I forgot that she even had a job as an apartment manager that her rich uncle provided for her.
As for Ford Decker, I don't have strong feelings for him. I thought that he seemed capable in the field..that's all i can say about him.
The story itself had a lot of potential. A deadly toxin missing and the heroine's cousin the suspect? Sounds great! But the flat characters and awkward chapter transitions take away from the overall story.
I would not recommend this book. And I don't think I'll keep it on my shelves.

Playing Dirty

I closed Playing Dirty as a did not finish at approximately 30% and a little over 100 pages.
There are a few things I expect when I go into any romance novel. I want the love story, the romance. The first time Ford and Shay are on the pages together (opening chapter 2) they have been sleeping together for a few weeks. As a reader this was a huge disappointment. I have no idea how he charmed himself into her life. I just know he is there. This would not have bothered me in a novella length read. With the amount of pages of a full length novel I wanted the full details of the initial meet and greet.
The odd flow didn’t stop there. I was robbed of the heat and passion that led up to the first sex scene. Chapter 8 open mid scene with Shay riding her way to bliss. It would have been nice to read the romance that keeps Shay and Ford in bed together. I’m told plenty that they are over the moon attracted to each other. I didn’t get to read the events that created these feelings.
By the time I chose to give up on this book Shay and Ford had been given a few pages where they were together interacting and giving me some dialogue to follow into their quasi relationship. At this point I just couldn’t care enough about how they get to their happily ever after. Considering I didn’t know how they even met and decided a roll in the bed (repeatedly for weeks) was a good idea.

- hero that I didn't want to know any better
- too much exposition about the Ops and the secret Alliance group
- I was bored
