"An epic love. An epic hate. An epic story that would last a lifetime."
I hurt. I hurt so deeply, I felt the pain searing in my bones and jabbing like a hot poker into my heart. I knew nothing would make it better as the memories pulled from the crevices of my mind, detailing the bad and the ugly, filling my thoughts with regret as I slipped into the darkness. . .
When I was eight, my mother was dying of cancer, my father lost his job, and the bank kicked us out of our house. I was forced to move to the strange town of Arlis, Texas where my father and I slept in our car in the hospital parking lot. Desperate and hopeless, we lived on fumes of our former life.
Then one night, everything changed forever. A knock on the car window brought a family into my life that I only wanted to shut out. I hated charity and I hated the Masons. Well, except one. He made it impossible to hate him.
Jess Mason had the biggest blue eyes and ornery smile of any boy I had ever seen. He was a ray of sunshine in my dark world. A boy full of adventure, dragging me across the meadow of Sprayberry Ranch; a beautiful Texas paradise full of horses and tree houses that got us into more trouble than anyone ever imagined.
Jess was my everything as a kid until we grew up and the rules changed. Instead of living happily ever after with a boy full of love. . . I destroyed it.

AN EPIC LOVE STORY!! 5 STARS!!
By Aestas Book Blog
WOW WOW WOW!!! This book was just breathtaking!! I loved the writing, I felt the story, and the intensity of this childhood friends-to-lovers romance kept my heart racing the whole way through!! Truly, an epic love story.
It began with a heart-wrenching scene set in present day. While we didn't know exactly what had happened, it was clear that the heroine had just been through some kind of trauma. And in order to explain what was happening to her, we were taken back to the beginning of her story. To her childhood.
Alex (heroine) and Jess (hero) met when they were just eight years old. Alex's mother was dying and after her father lost his job, they were kicked out of their home. Homeless and with no where else to go, they were forced to sleep in their old truck outside the hospital in the parking lot... until Mr. Mason, the doctor treating Alex's mother, found them one night and made them a generous offer that would change their lives. Even though Alex hated the idea of charity, she and her father had no choice but to accept the help... She may have hated the charity, but the one person she couldn't hate was the doctor's son, Jess. A boy her age who was the first person to make her smile again in what seemed like forever.
"I let myself be pulled in by Jess. The broken, leftover shell of a girl felt bright and shiny whenever he stepped in a room."
The Masons gave Alex and her father a place to live on their ranch and over the years, she and Jess grew up together and become inseparable best friends. Without giving too much away, I'll just say that this book then follows their story all the way through to adult-hood as they eventually fall in love.
This story blew me away!! I truly felt every word with all my heart and soul. From the moment I read the prologue I was hooked and could not put it down. The more I read, the more invested I became in these characters and I can honestly say that I had tears in my eyes for the entire last 20% of the book.
This was such a multilayered story. There were two storylines, past and present, that were seamlessly woven together. It's not always easy to write this kind of dual timeline but this author did a fantastic job with it. My heart didn't stop racing. I cared about the past, I was beyond curious about the future, and I loved seeing the way all the pieces we were shown fell in together as their life story began to take shape.
It's both a coming-of-age story and a romance. Alex had a lot of personal issues stemming from the charity she was forced to accept each day. Her intense guilt over the generosity showered on her by the Masons fuelled her deep-seeded need for independence that shaped the course of many years of her life. For a long time, she insisted that on only being friends with Jess. Best friends, but nothing more. As frustrating as that was, I felt like I could understand her reasons while simultaneously wishing desperately for them to be together. It was painful because I felt so connected to this story. It didn't just feel like I was reading their story, it felt like I was living it right along side them. Meanwhile Jess had loved her since they were small. He still knew she had a lot to work through and was willing to wait for her until she might be ready. This guy just loved her so much that it broke my heart at times. Especially with the stunning beautiful writing... it was all just overwhelmingly emotional at times.
"His blue eyes spoke a thousand words all rolled into a heartfelt stare. They calmed the panic inside my body. In the silence between two friends, the air carried an entire conversation. His dark lashes blinked back a vow I knew he meant more than anything. `I promise this will not destroy us.'
But the things about best friends... and soul mates... is that, no matter what, they gravitate back to each other. And there was no doubt, from the very start, that Alex and Jess were meant for each other.
To say the ending is intense in an understatement of epic proportions but my gosh was it ever amazing!! The author didn't hold back and even though it ripped out my heart, that epilogue rounded everything out perfectly! I couldn't have been happier with the finale.
Everything about this book, from the writing, to the story, to the emotions it evoked, made it exactly the kind of story I most love to read. The delicious, heart wrenching push/pull of Alex and Jess' friendship and love, the guilt, the longing, the desire, the pain, the healing, all of it was just stunningly portrayed. This is truly one of the most beautiful stories I've ever read. An absolutely EPIC love story. I recommend this book for everyone!!
"We've got somethin' that people look for their whole lives.
We just found it when we were eight."
Rating: 5 STARS!!! Standalone romance.

Very emotional journey...
By Cindy O
Intensely emotional 20 year journey between two people from completely different walks of life but who forge a lifelong bond.
This is not a hearts and flowers story. Due to circumstances that were too much for her 8 year old mind to grasp Alexander "Alex" rages at the injustice and rages at the ones that help. The only one she lets partially in is Jess Mason. We as a reader knew these two were destined for each other when they were both 8 but Alex refused to believe she was ever good enough for his love so she kept him in the friend’s zone and broke his heart more than once over the 20 years. It was painful at times watching Alex’s self destructing behavior and how that eventually affected her “friendship” with Jess. The old saying of you don’t know what you had till it’s gone is basically Alex’s life.
There are many times you will need Kleenex reading this and also times you just want to beat Alex over the head to get over it. The ending was not a traditional ending but the epilogue which was probably another twenty years later finally left you with a happy feeling.

Wanted more but over all it was an okay read.
By Queen B
So the start rating here is different than on goodreads on goodreads I gave it 2 (it was okay) on here 3 is "It's okay" either way here is my review...
This book was all over the place so many bloggers I follow were talking about it and how amazing it was. I knew I just had to start it in the hopes that I would feel the same way.
Though I hate to say that I didn't fall in absolute love with it the way others did. It was a good book, it was a sweet story, I did enjoy it overall. I just didn't feel as pulled into it as I wished I would have been. It took me around four days to read it because I just kept losing interest and would stop reading. It was a lot of back and forth and back and forth which overall is not an issue but I just wanted to know what was going on in the now (today) in the book when we get so little of it.
I know that many loved this book and I LOVE when I find a book that so many adore, yet something in it fell flat for me. It just reminds me how different we all are and how what one person loves another may not.
For me I didn't connect, although I felt for Alex, I just didn't understand some things and was waiting for more of an explanation and didn't get it (or maybe it was one of the times I read but just didn't pay much attention to what I was reading). I understand the need for back-story but at the same time I felt like that is 90% of this book. I understood why Alex disliked the Mason's but at the same time I felt like she was very ungrateful, considering what her life could have been.
Now the main reason I was not a big fan of this story would be the ending. I read this book with as I said about 90% of it being the back-story 36/54 chapters are her past (from her being the age of 6 to the age of 26 and not consecutively so one chapter will be when she was 6 the next when she was 8 then you will have around 5 chapters all when she was 16 years old and so on.) That didn't bother me though, what killed me is we went from so much of their past to a little of the present then it jumps SO far into the future. I COMPLETELY understand that it was a long story as it was (which is not bad) but I felt like maybe she could have made it a duo that way she could have gotten more of the present in there that so many of us were actually looking forward to. (I won't say exactly what because that would give spoilers)
I just felt like there was such a build up and then bam it was over and we got nothing much in between if that makes sense (for those who have read you will understand maybe).
It makes me happy to find out this is the authors first book and so many have read and loved it. I don't question if she will only get better!!
