The Substitute: The Wedding Pact #1, by Denise Grover Swank

The New York Times and USA Today bestselling first book in The Wedding Pact series by Denise Grover Swank.

Megan Vandemeer meant to tell her parents about her broken engagement, but a month and a half later she finds herself boarding a plane home to her wedding. Having stretched avoidance to its limits, it's time to come clean--a terrifying prospect since her mother is sure to blame her rather than her cheating, emotionally frigid ex. A couple of drinks and two Dramamine later, Megan finds herself spilling her sob story to the tall, dark, and handsome stranger in the seat next to her.

With only one week left to save his business, Josh McMillan boards a plane to Kansas City in a last-ditch effort, leaving the details to chance. An unexpected answer is delivered in the form of the beautiful brunette beside him. Though she’s completely loopy, her honesty, openness, and humor charm him. So when she passes out before landing, he helps her off the plane--a good deed that leads to a colossal misunderstanding. Her parents assume he’s her fiancé. In a twist of fate, the mix-up might help Josh save his business, so he plays along, figuring he can help Megan too. All he has to do is stage a public break up convincing enough to appease her mother.

Josh is only supposed to be a substitute groom, but the more time he and Megan spend together, the more their pretend engagement starts to feel real…and the less they want to break it off. Can a relationship that began as a farce turn into happily ever after?

A fantastically funny, emotional, dramatic read
By I Feel the Need, the Need to Read book blog
*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.*

The premise of this book is that Megan is going home to her own wedding but without the groom. She meets a man on the airplane and because of her being impaired, he is assumed to be the groom. They each let the ruse go on because it benefits them both.

I knew this was going to be a very funny, emotional, dramatic story. There are quite a few laugh out loud moments and moments where you are trying to figure out exactly what is going on. Denise does a great job of foreshadowing in the story, but not so much that you know what the outcome is. You try to guess what you think is going to happen, but when it is revealed, you didn't have a clue.

I like stories like this that have the mystery mixed in with the rest of the elements of the story. It keeps me glued to the pages and wanting to read. I actually stayed up all night reading this because once I got into it, I needed to find out what was going to happen. I had to no idea as to where the story was going to go and I just had to keep reading.

Even though this story has more sex in it than I like, it was done tastefully and was not metaphor-ridden and silly. The moments were intimate and sexy and did not induce any eye-rolling by me, which is a great feat with sex scenes!

I laughed, I held my breath, and I fell in love!
By Jamie E. Davis
The Wedding Pact is a new favorite series after reading The Substitute!

Megan Vandemeer boards a flight home for her wedding, but the problem is she broke up with Jay six weeks ago when she found him cheating with his secretary. Too frightened to confess to her domineering and hard-to-please mother, she heads towards Kansas City with the intent to tell her in person.

Josh McMillan boards the fight to Kansas City on a last ditch effort to save his family business. He's looking for the person responsible for stealing his design leading to the rejection of his patent. The business will fail in a matter of days without answers. Leaving it up to fate, he sits down next to Megan only to inadvertently become her savior when she mixes dramamine and alcohol, passing out on the flight. The next thing he knows, he's meeting her family after passing himself off as her fiancé so he can get her off of the plane. When he realizes he is meeting the very man he suspects to have his design, how can he help but continue the charade?

What is not to love about this story? The humor is absolutely worth laughing out loud! I can't tell you how many times I found myself laughing at the one-liners and banter between the characters. Megan and Josh are evenly matched in wit, and the sparks between them only enhance the chemistry making a couple that you want to root for.

I fell in love with Megan's Gram immediately. This quirky, eccentric lady will have you in stitches with her antics. Every family needs a Gram to keep everyone in line and keep them on their toes!

The friendship between Megan, Libby, and Blair is longstanding. These girls have a connection formed by two decades of history, and they all want to see Megan happy. Blair is fiercely protective, and Libby is full of hope and doesn't mind conspiring to pave the way for Josh to stay in the picture.

You can't help but ride the roller coaster of emotions as Josh struggles with having to choose between his growing attraction to Megan and the responsibility of the people who work for his company. So much rides on him, but can he really follow through with plans that will inevitably hurt Megan? You can feel his struggle as he oscillates from both ends of the spectrum.

Whether you have read anything by Denise Grover Swank or not, this book is worth every page you turn. I can't wait for the second and third books to find out what happens with The Wedding Pact!

Would never happen in real life, but cute chick lit.
By Rebecca A. Cline
If you are looking for a cutesy romance then I guess this will fit the bill. The plot is utterly ridiculous, but it often is in these types of stories. Once you buy into the premise that someone would pose as the fiancé of a complete stranger to the point of sharing a bedroom with them in their parents house (FOR FOUR DAYS!), then I guess it's ok. The main character Megan was a complete doormat with her mother, which is very frustrating, but without that, there is no story. Josh is a likeable guy and Megan's friend Libby is ok, but pretty much every other character is awful. There is a lot of nonsense with a dirty nudist Grandmother that I think is for comic relief, but it just makes the book even more unbelievable. Also, there is quite a bit of graphic sex, which I don't really care for. Even though I love Denise Grover Swank, I probably won't read the next book unless I'm desperate for something to read. Overall, I give this 3.5 stars.
