I won't be reading more than this story by this author.....
By Runnergirl
*Spoilers* Okay, I can't roll my eyes enough here. So this girl, Mikayla's, family gets brutally murdered, so she goes to live with Jake, a guy who she just met the night before, and his family. But she barely grieves and all she can do is think about is sleeping with Jake. Jake's family is totally fine with a total stranger coming to live with them, and they even build a room over their garage for this girl. Jake keeps sneaking across the roof to fool around with Mikayla, and his dad basically high-fives him when he finds out that his teenage son, who is on the cusp of a huge baseball career, is possible having sex with this girl who has been through a catastrohic loss. Mikayla, who has been sleeping with her former boyfriend for years, suddenly has a "I wonder what my parents would think about what I'm doing" moment with Jake. It's just ridiculous. Everyone is condoning these 18 year olds basically playing house together in a room provided by Jake's parents. Mikayla only seems to feel hot and bothered for Jake, instead of losing her mind after losing her entire family. Jake is all kinds of sweet, and too good to be true. The writing is actually pretty good by the author, but the story is just silly.

A Story of Tragedy and True Love...
By Kirstie's Passionate About Reading
When I started to read "More Than This" I thought it was going to be a teen angst story...BUT...I was totally proven wrong.
There is definitely a coming of age element to the story...but more so a story of tragic circumstances that force a young woman to decide if she will lay day and let it overcome her or stand tall and accept what fate has in store for her.
Mikayla's adult life is only just beginning...but life takes a horrible turn bringing all that she has ever known crashing down around her. Destiny steps in and offers her sanctuary in the arms of a good Samaritan.
Jake is an all star boy next door type who has a heart of gold. He happens to be there when Mikayla's life is turned upside down. Jake cannot help but want to comfort Mikayla through this difficult time...the question is will it stop at comfort? Can Jake help Mikayla heal without his heart being held wide open?
Mikayla deals with her losses maturely yet still with plenty of emotion...Jake is beautifully patient with Mikayla supporting her through her pain and suffering.
Ms McLean very bravely worked with some very heavy issues but was able to mold them into a very powerful story line.
Ms McLean was able to maintain the integrity of the story line without making it all about the sexual tension, in turn the story was well worth reading to the very end. Now I have to admit I enjoy a story with plenty of hot sex, but this story was not about that or the usual angst a lot of books contain. The story played out beautifully with realistic characters that as a reader you will become very fond of. An Amazing story definitely worth reading!

he waited until she had some closure **SPOILERS**
By RomReader
18yo heroine ends up with 18yo hot-shot athlete Hero on her prom night after she catches her boyfriend & best friend in the act. Hero & his friends take her into their group to help her have a good time despite what happened. But her romance crisis is nothing like the trauma she experienced the end of that long night when she comes home & her whole family has been murdered by a burglar. Hero & his family take her in as she deals with her losses & her uncertain future. She & Hero spend inordinate amount of time together & their attachment to each other deepens. Yet they don't make any official commitments to each other & are careful about their physical intimacy. She's trying to figure out her new life & he gives her the space she needs. As college looms ahead, does it push them to finally make a commitment? Or will it give them more reason to put their relationship on hold?
The first chapter began with lots of drama & its these ups & downs that heroine deals with throughout the book. I liked how MacLean handled heroine's multiple losses. We see her go through different ways of dealing with them. It wasn't rushed & her romance was Hero wasn't portrayed as the cure. Her relationship with Hero was still very much tied to how she's handling her losses & her new life without her loved ones. And we clearly see Hero as her rock through all of it. Sure, he blew up at times but he apologized & the rest of the time it was all about heroine & making sure she was feeling supported & cared for by him. He made me sigh a few times. He was the perfect boyfriend who wasn't her official boyfriend. Hero did a lot of showing of his love for her than telling.**
The sex scenes were not explicit. There were more descriptions for their foreplay than the consummation. I wasn't disappointed since, at that point in the book, the highlight was on their emotional & verbal commitment to each other.
Recommended.
