An Insightful Romance

In the end, this is a romance. Boy meets girl, loses girl, but finds an even better girl. Except along the way, the boy becomes a girl, at least for most of the time. The obvious part of this story is the boy becomes a girl, it's what selling the book, just look at the cover. But that is not really the key point. What Schrodinger has actually written is a romance about a boy finding the right girl for him. Someone who truly wants to understand him, wants what is best for him, and someone for whom he can do the same. In the end, he even gets to be the hero for her, saving her from possible death at the hands of his crazed former girlfriend. Its that doing the same for her, coming to understand her needs and wants that has to do with the transgender aspect of the story. By becoming a girl, the hero, Sam, comes to better understand what it means to be a girl, what makes them happy, and he sees the truly positive sides of being feminine. He even gains some insights into what it means to be a man. (For those old enough to remember, this is the underlying theme to the Dustin Hoffman film, "Tootsie.")
Schrodinger does this all very well. It's a pleasure to read. Despite being a fantasy, after all the transgender is accomplished by means of magic, the characters are totally believable. The plot follows logically, and with exception of the magic, we are not asked to swallow anything too outlandish. Although the transformation of Sam's ex-girlfriend into some mafia like goon, all done offstage, is hard to buy. The story is also slightly marred by some bad editing. In two or three places, women's names are interchanged, causing some confusion as to who is doing what. Finally, despite the the transgender content, this is not a work of erotica. There are a few sex scenes, but for the true fan of pornography, this is too minor to arouse anything of interest. (If you would like to read this same theme from the aspect of erotica, try Kimbra Clausen's "Gender Swap Therapy.") These points make the story less than a five star. Nonetheless, it is certainly worth the time to read. It does successfully make the point, that truly to love someone, you need to make the effort to understand them, be supportive of who they are, and be willing to change if that what it takes to make the relationship succeed. In the end, you'll be a better and happier person for having done it, and you won't want to go back to your old self.

Poor Ending Spoils Plot

Through the first about 85% this was decent. My only real complaint being that Sam was kind of an idiot. I mean he's lying in bed as a woman all aroused and bummed because he can't do anything about it...because women can't take care of themselves without help, right? Hahaha
The last 15% is just so stupid that the book loses a couple of stars. Why set the ticking clock of a year and then skip over about 48 weeks? Those were critical weeks too in Sam accepting himself as a girl; I'm not sure why the author chose to fast-forward it. And then hired goons get involved and it just turns ridiculous.
So it's mostly an OK gender swap book ruined by a terrible ending.

Its an interesting idea, but at some points in the story the manager and the girlfriends names keep being used interchangably. It was confusing especially near the climax.
