ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL! DESERVES SIX STARS!!
By Brad Stonecipher
I am extremely elated that Lisa Jackson is now writing suspense novels. I have always known her to be a prolific romance novelist. "Hot Blooded" was my first novel of hers that I've read. I loved the whole thing. It says on the side that it's a Romantic Suspense, but it is practically all suspense. The plot: Talk show host Dr. Samantha Leeds is being stalked. She is receiving phone threats and letters saying that she needs to be repented for her sins and that she will die soon. Sam doesn't understand what this nutcase is talking about until a girl calls up saying her name is "Annie." This frightens Sam even more. (I won't explain about Annie because that would take about a decade in writing). At the same time, prostitutes are being found murdered with a set of rosary beadsk, at the same time Samantha is on the radio. Detective Rick Benz and his partner belive that the prostitution murders are connected to Sam's stalker. This novel keeps up the pace all the way until the shocking finale that leaves room for a sequel, "Cold Blooded," coming June 02. I am now in the middle of "If She Only Knew," Lisa's one other suspense novel.

Book One of the New Orleans Series
By J. Kaye Oldner
HOT BLOODED is the first in Lisa Jackson's New Orleans series. I didn't start this series at the beginning. My introduction to this author was with SHIVER. I had no clue this was a series until a friend clued me in. In fact I went on to read ABSOLUTE FEAR not feeling like I'd missed a thing. In LOST SOULS, however, I felt the gaps show and knew I needed to go back and read the first three before proceeding further.

If you haven't read HOT BLOODED, I think you are missing a treat. Out of all the books in this series, this has been my favorite so far. I thought this would be more about Bentz and Montoya, but they weren't the main characters here. This story was about Dr. Samantha Leeds, a radio talk show psychologist, who becomes a serial killer's target. The mystery to finding the killer comes from her past. In the meantime, she meets Ty Wheeler who she is immediately attracted to. When the truth about him is revealed, Sam wonders if he's the killer.

This book had a perfect combination of suspense and romance, but for me the best part was the ending. Although Sam's story felt closed with a solid ending, Bentz and Montoya presented enough questions at the end to get me excited about the next book. As of today, here are the books in this series:

1. HOT BLOODED, May 2001
2. COLD BLOODED, June 2002
3. THE NIGHT BEFORE, March 2003
4. SHIVER, April 2006
5. ABSOLUTE FEAR, April 2007
6. LOST SOULS, March 2008
7. MALICE, April 2009

Terrific romantic suspense
By Sheri Melnick
Dr. Samantha Leeds is the host of Midnight Confessions, a popular New Orleans radio talk show. She begins getting calls at home and at work from a man named "John" who tells her that he knows her and asks her to repent for her past sins. While the ratings at WSLJ climb, Samantha begins to get very scared as one of her callers is "Annie", a woman claiming to be a teenager who committed suicide after calling in to Sam's radio show in Houston nine years ago.
Coincidentally, perhaps, Ty Wheeler moves into Samantha's neighborhood. Though he is incredibly attractive and very attentive when "John" increases his focus on Samantha, Ty isn't very forthcoming about himself. Could he somehow be involved with the threatening calls?
Are the brutal murders being committed in New Orleans linked somehow to Samantha? And whom can she trust when someone close to her just may prove to be "John"?
Lisa Jackson has written an intense thriller, one that will knock your socks off and keep you up until the wee hours of the morning. With well-developed characters, steamy romance, and captivating intrigue, HOT BLOODED is a must read.

Awesome storytelling by an amazing author!
By Michelle
Disavowed is absolutely amazing!!!

Kaylea Cross again knocked her book out of the park by giving us the perfect mix of romance, adventure, sexy times, and suspense. She had me sobbing by the middle of the prologue and kept me intensely hooked with the Bourne-type adventures B and Matt lived through.

Also, if you've read her Titanium series, you'll love seeing how the guys show up and help save the day!! Sigh, Sean! Love you, man!!

Awesome storytelling by an amazing author! I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, and honestly, it can't be written and on my kindle fast enough! haha!

++++++++ SPOILER ++++++++
2nd chance romances have to be written *just so* in order for me to fall in love with them and believe that the ghost of the dead spouse isn't still hanging over their heads. And Kaylea succeeded 110% there with me! You felt the love Matt had for his first wife in the prologue, but also saw how he was able to process her death and acknowledge that he can still love Lisa, and yet still find love and happiness again with B.

Another homerun from the author!!
By Books And Spoons
Gripping tale of suspense, action, black ops, and conspiracy theories, mixed with an amazing love story.
The prologue gives a great insight to Matt, and the loss and pain he has suffered. I fell for Matt in the previous books of the series, he is such an all around good guy, the perfect hero material, it's hard not to like him. The connection and curiosity between Matt and Briar was first introduced earlier in the series, and I have been looking forward to this story! It didn't disappoint. The attraction burns hot, the passion between them is scorching. But at the same time it's somehow so tender, loving and caring, protective, it just melted my heart.
The action is riveting, and heartfelt, as people close to Briar, and her operations, starts to die in mysterious ways, and as the government goes after Briar, the hunt for the truth is on across the country. The exploit for truth is explosive, tense, and fierce. Operatives are dying in a domino effect, while Briar and Matt are on the run, fighting to stay alive. I loved that Alex and the Titanium gang was called to help, I always enjoy to visit with the friends from other series. The tension in the story keeps building from the start, the web of lies, secrets, set ups, and illegal actions are endless, while the culprit is well hidden in his position of power, and slippery to catch.
Yet another dazzling suspense tale from Kaylea Cross, where intense action is mixed with the enticing love story, highly recommended

Matt and Briar
By Karli
What a great series!! Each of the books is a standalone, but you will want to get to know the rest of the team through their books. Cross brings it every time and leaves me waiting impatiently for the next book. This book is no exception and is very possibly the best yet.

Possible Early Spoilers:
Matt's team is poised to move in on a high value target when he gets word that satellite shows the perimeter was breached. The lone person left after 20 minutes outside the remote mountain cabin, but that was long enough. The target is dead. When they track the shooter through deep snow, however, they find someone else is on the hunt. Their shooter is wounded and is someone Matt knows from a conference in New Orleans, introduced to him by Rycroft. So what is she doing in the middle of his op, with someone trying to kill her?

Briar was told no one else knows the location of her target, so when the team moves in she settles in until she can safely move out. But another sniper shoots her and her hidden snowmobile on the way to her vehicle. She recognizes Matt when the team surrounds her, but trusts no one until she talks to her handler and Rycroft. They order her to go with Matt to a safe house and tell Matt to go off the grid, because only someone with a high level of clearance could have set her up.

The Substitute: The Wedding Pact #1, by Denise Grover Swank

The New York Times and USA Today bestselling first book in The Wedding Pact series by Denise Grover Swank.

Megan Vandemeer meant to tell her parents about her broken engagement, but a month and a half later she finds herself boarding a plane home to her wedding. Having stretched avoidance to its limits, it's time to come clean--a terrifying prospect since her mother is sure to blame her rather than her cheating, emotionally frigid ex. A couple of drinks and two Dramamine later, Megan finds herself spilling her sob story to the tall, dark, and handsome stranger in the seat next to her.

With only one week left to save his business, Josh McMillan boards a plane to Kansas City in a last-ditch effort, leaving the details to chance. An unexpected answer is delivered in the form of the beautiful brunette beside him. Though she’s completely loopy, her honesty, openness, and humor charm him. So when she passes out before landing, he helps her off the plane--a good deed that leads to a colossal misunderstanding. Her parents assume he’s her fiancé. In a twist of fate, the mix-up might help Josh save his business, so he plays along, figuring he can help Megan too. All he has to do is stage a public break up convincing enough to appease her mother.

Josh is only supposed to be a substitute groom, but the more time he and Megan spend together, the more their pretend engagement starts to feel real…and the less they want to break it off. Can a relationship that began as a farce turn into happily ever after?

A fantastically funny, emotional, dramatic read
By I Feel the Need, the Need to Read book blog
*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.*

The premise of this book is that Megan is going home to her own wedding but without the groom. She meets a man on the airplane and because of her being impaired, he is assumed to be the groom. They each let the ruse go on because it benefits them both.

I knew this was going to be a very funny, emotional, dramatic story. There are quite a few laugh out loud moments and moments where you are trying to figure out exactly what is going on. Denise does a great job of foreshadowing in the story, but not so much that you know what the outcome is. You try to guess what you think is going to happen, but when it is revealed, you didn't have a clue.

I like stories like this that have the mystery mixed in with the rest of the elements of the story. It keeps me glued to the pages and wanting to read. I actually stayed up all night reading this because once I got into it, I needed to find out what was going to happen. I had to no idea as to where the story was going to go and I just had to keep reading.

Even though this story has more sex in it than I like, it was done tastefully and was not metaphor-ridden and silly. The moments were intimate and sexy and did not induce any eye-rolling by me, which is a great feat with sex scenes!

I laughed, I held my breath, and I fell in love!
By Jamie E. Davis
The Wedding Pact is a new favorite series after reading The Substitute!

Megan Vandemeer boards a flight home for her wedding, but the problem is she broke up with Jay six weeks ago when she found him cheating with his secretary. Too frightened to confess to her domineering and hard-to-please mother, she heads towards Kansas City with the intent to tell her in person.

Josh McMillan boards the fight to Kansas City on a last ditch effort to save his family business. He's looking for the person responsible for stealing his design leading to the rejection of his patent. The business will fail in a matter of days without answers. Leaving it up to fate, he sits down next to Megan only to inadvertently become her savior when she mixes dramamine and alcohol, passing out on the flight. The next thing he knows, he's meeting her family after passing himself off as her fiancé so he can get her off of the plane. When he realizes he is meeting the very man he suspects to have his design, how can he help but continue the charade?

What is not to love about this story? The humor is absolutely worth laughing out loud! I can't tell you how many times I found myself laughing at the one-liners and banter between the characters. Megan and Josh are evenly matched in wit, and the sparks between them only enhance the chemistry making a couple that you want to root for.

I fell in love with Megan's Gram immediately. This quirky, eccentric lady will have you in stitches with her antics. Every family needs a Gram to keep everyone in line and keep them on their toes!

The friendship between Megan, Libby, and Blair is longstanding. These girls have a connection formed by two decades of history, and they all want to see Megan happy. Blair is fiercely protective, and Libby is full of hope and doesn't mind conspiring to pave the way for Josh to stay in the picture.

You can't help but ride the roller coaster of emotions as Josh struggles with having to choose between his growing attraction to Megan and the responsibility of the people who work for his company. So much rides on him, but can he really follow through with plans that will inevitably hurt Megan? You can feel his struggle as he oscillates from both ends of the spectrum.

Whether you have read anything by Denise Grover Swank or not, this book is worth every page you turn. I can't wait for the second and third books to find out what happens with The Wedding Pact!

Would never happen in real life, but cute chick lit.
By Rebecca A. Cline
If you are looking for a cutesy romance then I guess this will fit the bill. The plot is utterly ridiculous, but it often is in these types of stories. Once you buy into the premise that someone would pose as the fiancé of a complete stranger to the point of sharing a bedroom with them in their parents house (FOR FOUR DAYS!), then I guess it's ok. The main character Megan was a complete doormat with her mother, which is very frustrating, but without that, there is no story. Josh is a likeable guy and Megan's friend Libby is ok, but pretty much every other character is awful. There is a lot of nonsense with a dirty nudist Grandmother that I think is for comic relief, but it just makes the book even more unbelievable. Also, there is quite a bit of graphic sex, which I don't really care for. Even though I love Denise Grover Swank, I probably won't read the next book unless I'm desperate for something to read. Overall, I give this 3.5 stars.

Stolen Dreams - A Mary O'Reilly Paranormal Mystery - Book Fourteen (Mary O'Reilly Series 14), by Terri Reid

“But Sol, it ain’t haunted like you thought,” Marty argued cautiously. It wasn’t a good idea to get Sol too angry. “We’ve tried everything, séances, Ouija boards, mediums—everything. This place is just an old, empty house. A creepy, old house.”
Sol shook his head, disregarding Marty’s words, and started up the tall staircase to the second floor. “It just has to seem like a haunted house,” he said. “We’ll keep the crowds coming if it seems like a haunted house. People pay good money to spend the night in a haunted mansion.”
Marty followed him, shaking his head. “After that last paranormal research group came through and found nothing, we ain’t been getting the crowds like we used to,” he pointed out. “People look on the internet for everything. All they have to do is research the house and they’ll see we’ve been investigated by three different groups. They ain’t gonna pay top dollar to stay in the state’s most haunted house if it ain’t got no ghosts.”
Sol stopped at the top of the stairs and waited for Marty. “Then all we need is a ghost,” he said.
Marty shook his head and put his hand on his partner’s shoulder. “Sol, we’ve been at this for three years,” he replied. “The balloon payment is coming up in three months. We ain’t got the capital. We gotta let go of this place before we lose everything.”
Shoving Marty’s arm off his shoulder, Sol paced angrily down the hallway. “Don’t you get it, Marty?” he growled, his teeth clenched. “I’m going to lose everything if this place doesn’t pan out. I sunk everything I owned into this place. I don’t have any reserves. I don’t have anything to turn to. This place has to work out.”
Marty leaned one hand on the balustrade at the top of the staircase and sadly shook his head. “I’m sorry, Sol. I’d do anything to help you,” he said sadly. “But this place just ain’t got a ghost.”
Sol sighed deeply and turned back to his friend, nodding his head slowly. “Thank you, Marty,” he replied.
A icy tremor of fear swept through Marty’s body as he saw the cold, calculating look in Sol’s eyes. He lifted his hands defensively. “No, Sol, no,” he cried even as he felt the power of Sol’s body knock him backwards and down the stairs.
A few moments later, Sol stood at the top of the staircase, looking down at the broken, lifeless body of his business partner sprawled unnaturally on the black and white, ceramic tiled, lobby floor. He leaned against the same balustrade that only moments before had been held by Marty and nodded. “And now we have a ghost.”

Mary, Ian and Mike investigate a supposedly haunted house and discover there are more than just ghosts hidden behind its doors.

Wonderful weaving of words

Terri Reid does an amazing job of weaving a great paranormal suspense/mystery with romance! I love how she has created and developed the characters! She just gets better with every book!

Hmm
By book lover
I've read all of these books and they started off good, but as they go along they are becoming more simple minded. The conversations are to the point of being nauseating. The conversations are like children talking to children. When they talk to Clarrisa it's like they are a child talking to a child. I think I've had enough of this series. It also now takes pages to relate a simple thought or experience and gets dragged out to the point of being bored. I really feel this was better as a young adult (12-15 years old) book, it's just to immature to be considered as a book for adults. In the beginning they were more sophisticated, not anymore. Very childish conversations.

I absolutely love this author!
By Loves to Read and Review
I love mysteries. I love paranormal books. I love suspense. All of these elements are present in the Mary O'Reilly series. And, to top this off, the books have a guardian angel as well as at least three studly, handsome, wonderful men. The story this time is about a woman finding her child that was taken from her after the birth. There is also a second, third and even fourth story interwoven in the first plot. This could be considered Christian fiction since God is mentioned often and the good guys are REALLY good guys. I've read all 13 of the other books and the plots and characters are not getting old at all. I just finished rereading the whole series and was very ready for this one to become available. This author has my highest rating!

Captured and Examined, by Kallista Dane

When her father tries to force her to marry fat, old, drunken Owen Leary to preserve the family lands, Tess O'Rourke runs away from home. She gets lost on the heath in the midst of a ferocious storm and loses consciousness, only to awaken in a cave, naked and shivering, staring into the eyes of a handsome stranger. To her dismay, the man questions her in an unfamiliar language and then spanks her bare bottom when she tries to run away.

After computers all over Europe are hit with a crippling attack, Quinn, an ex-Navy SEAL now working for NATO's cyber-terrorism squad, is dispatched to the Irish coastline in search of the problem’s source. It is there that he discovers a naked Irish lass hiding in a cave near an ancient stone outcropping. After she attacks him and attempts to flee, he brings the defiant girl back to his headquarters with a well-spanked bottom. Once there, his medical team conducts a thorough examination, leaving his captive deeply humiliated and even more determined to escape.

Quinn has no intention of letting her go until he gets the truth, but Tess speaks only Gaelic and seems to know nothing of modern day life, and hard as it is for him to believe, over time Quinn becomes convinced that she has somehow been transported from the past. With each passing day his feelings for the feisty redhead grow stronger, and when he discovers that his superiors plan to lock her up indefinitely and study her like a lab rat, Quinn risks everything to rescue her. But can he keep her safe long enough to unravel the mystery that brought her into his life?

Review
5.0 out of 5 stars A must read from the science fiction romance realm. This one is HOT and the suspense has readers on their seat!! February 8, 2015 By Rosalie Belle
The action scenes are jump off the page amazing and the intimate moments between these two are HOT. Dane does an amazing job pulling me into my first scientific fiction romance novel, making me a very quick lover of the genre (as long as they are all as good as this one!).

Review by Rosalie Belle with Guilty Pleasures Reviews

From the Author
Although the electromagnetic anomaly that sends Tess rocketing through time is my own invention, the bits of information I included about quantum physics are very real.  Doing the research for Captured and Examined was fascinating.  Scientists say they've performed experiments where particles of matter have actually moved from one lab to another on the globe almost instantaneously.  Some particles even exist in a measurable way in two places at the same time.  And one well-known scientist really has been quoted as describing quantum physics as "funky."  No, for those of you who may be wondering, it wasn't Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory!

The location for the ending of this book was inspired by my friend Marie Jose, whose mother grew up on the exotic island of Madagascar.  Marie Jose captivated me with her tales of traveling there to visit relatives and the fascinating lives they lead in a place that remains almost unknown in our modern-day world.

Sandra's View "OK READ"
By Sandra
The book had 2374 locations on my kindle. The book was about a 23 year old girl, named Tess and a 42, year old man, named Quinn. Tess was innocent feisty, independent, rebellious and born in 1803. She runs away from home, in order to escape an unwanted fiancé and ended up in 2014. Quinn is forceful, protective, caring and very dominant. Quinn and his associates, were searching a cave, when they came across a scared and frightened naked girl. The book contained some so, so medical play, intense, descriptive and detailed sex, sex talk and oral sex and lots of spankings. I can't put my finger on it, but something was definitely missing for me.

First time I have ever read a science fiction book and so glad I did. I could not put it down. It was so well written with so many variables. Honestly I cannot remember when I have ever enjoyed a book as much as this one. I cannot wait to read more books by Kallista Dane.

Good story but set in the wrong country. Ireland is not part of the United Kingdom.
By Aine Nua
While I enjoyed this book and will certainly read more by this author, the story was very interesting and enjoyable, I find I don't like Ms Dane very much at the moment. This book is supposed to be set in Ireland. Being Irish myself I am wondering how in this day and age where research is so easy to do with internet etc. the author seems to believe that Ireland is physically attached to England (apparently the characters can get on a train in Dublin and get off in London) she also thinks that Ireland is still under British rule. Ireland is not part of the United Kingdom. We do not have lairds, heaths, cairns or henges (Stonehenge is in England) . These are all english and Scotish terms. It's almost like this book was originally set in Scotland and then at the last minute changed to be set in Ireland without editing. Even the way Tess speaks is Scottish (I dunno know) an Irish person would never speak those words. Also, maybe back in the 18hundreds where Tess is supposed to be from there was a belief in fairies etc. but that are we to believe that in 2014 the people of Ireland still believe in old myths and legends is, to me anyway, insulting. It's almost like Ms. Dane is of another era herself. Another misconception about Irish people is that we are all red headed. This is a myth. Irish people would be more inclined to be brown haired than red.

Now having said all this I will say again that I enjoyed the story. It was well written, meaning not too many typos etc. but I did find myself taken out of the story because of the blaring mistakes made in putting the characters in Ireland rather than Scotland where all the terms used would have fit so much better. I'd be interested to know how Ms. Dane got it so wrong. This is why I am giving the story three stars instead of five.

It was a rainy Friday morning.

Carlie Blair, who was running late for her job as secretary to Jacobsville, Texas police chief Cash Grier, only had time for a piece of toast and a sip of coffee before she rushed out the door to persuade her ten-year-old red pickup truck to start. It had gone on grinding seemingly forever before it finally caught up and started.

Her father, a Methodist minister, was out of town on business for the day. So there was nobody to help her get it running. Luck was with her. It did, at least, start.

She envied her friend Michelle Godfrey, whose guardian and his sister had given her a Jaguar for Christmas. Michelle was away at college now, and she and Carlie still spoke on the phone, but they no longer shared rides to town and the cost of gas on a daily basis.

The old clunker ate gas like candy and Carlie's salary only stretched so far. She wished she had more than a couple pairs ofjeans, a few T-shirts, a coat and one good pair of shoes. It must be nice, she thought, not to have to count pennies. But her father was always optimistic about their status. God loved the poor, because they gave away so much, he was fond of saying. He was probably right.

Right now, though, her rain-wet jeans were uncomfortable, and she'd stepped in a mud puddle with her only pair of good shoes while she was knocking corrosion off the battery terminals with the hammer she kept under the front seat for that purpose. All this in January weather, which was wet and cold and miserable, even in South Texas.

Consequently, when she parked her car in the small lot next to the chief's office, she looked like a bedraggled rat. Her dark, short, wavy hair was curling like crazy, as it always did in a rainstorm. Her coat was soaked. Her green eyes, full of silent resignation, didn't smile as she opened the office door.

Her worst nightmare was standing just inside.

Carson.

He glared at her. He was so much taller than she that she had to look up at him. There was a lot to look at, although she tried not to show her interest.

He was all muscle, but it wasn't overly obvious. He had a rodeo rider's physique, lean and powerful. Like her, he wore jeans, but his were obviously designer ones, like those hand-tooled leather boots on his big feet and the elaborately scrolled leather holster in which he kept his .45 automatic. He was wearing a jacket that partially concealed the gun, but he was intimidating enough without it.

He was Lakota Sioux. He had jet-black hair that fell to his waist in back, although he wore it in a pony-tail usually. He had large black eyes that seemed to see everything with one sweep of his head. He had high cheekbones and a light olive complexion. There were faint scars on the knuckles of his big hands. She noticed because he was holding a file in one of them. Her file.

Well, really, the chief's file, that had been lying on her desk, waiting to be typed up. It referenced an attack on her father a few weeks earlier that had resulted in Carlie being stabbed. Involuntarily, her hand went to the scar that ran from her shoulder down to the beginning of her small breasts. She flushed when she saw where he was looking.

"Those are confidential files," she said shortly.

He looked around. "There was nobody here to tell me that," he said, his deep voice clear as a bell in the silent room.

She flushed at the implied criticism. "Damned truck wouldn't start and I got soaked trying to start it," she muttered. She slid her weather-beaten old purse under her desk, ran a hand through her wet hair, took off her ratty coat and hung it up before she sat down at her desk. "Did you need something?" she asked with crushing politeness. She even managed a smile. Sort of.

"I need to see the chief," he replied.

She frowned. "There's this thing called a door. He's got one," she said patiently. "You knock on it, and he comes out."

He gave her a look that could have stopped traffic. "There's somebody in there with him," he said with equal patience. "I didn't want to interrupt."

"I see." She moved things around on her desk, muttering to herself.

"Bad sign."

She looked up. "Huh?"

"Talking to yourself."

She glared at him. It had been a bad morning altogether and he wasn't helping. "Don't listen, if it bothers you."

He gave her a long look and laughed hollowly. "Listen, kid, nothing about you bothers me. Or ever will."

There were the sounds of chairs scraping wood, as if the men in Cash's office had stood up and pushed back their seats. She figured it was safe to interrupt him.

Well, safer than listening to Mr. Original American here run her down.

She pushed the intercom button. "You have a visitor, sir," she announced.

There was a murmur. "Who is it?"

She looked at Carson. "The gentleman who starts fires with hand grenades," she said sweetly.

Carson stared at her with icy black eyes.

Cash's door opened, and there was Carlie's father, a man in a very expensive suit and Cash.

That explained why her father had left home so early. He was out of town, as he'd said he would be; out of Comanche Wells, where they lived, anyway. Not that Jacobsville was more than a five-minute drive from home.

"Carson," Cash said, nodding. "I think you know Reverend Blair and my brother, Garon?"

"Yes." Carson shook hands with them.

Carlie was doing mental shorthand. Garon Grier was senior special agent in charge of the Jacobsville branch of the FBI. He'd moved to Jacobsville some time ago, but the FBI branch office hadn't been here quite as long. Garon had been with the bureau for a number of years.

Carlie wondered what was going on that involved both the FBI and her father. But she knew that question would go unanswered. Her father was remarkably silent on issues that concerned law enforcement, although he knew quite a few people in that profession.

She recalled with a chill the telephone conversation she'd had recently with someone who called and said, "Tell your father he's next." She couldn't get anybody to tell her what they thought it meant. It was disturbing, like the news she'd overheard that the man who'd put a knife in her, trying to kill her father, had been poisoned and died.

Something big was going on, linked to that Wyoming murder and involving some politician who had ties to a drug cartel. But nobody told Carlie anything.

"Well, I'll be off. I have a meeting in San Antonio," Reverend Blair said, taking his leave. He paused at Carlie's desk. "Don't do anything fancy for supper, okay?" he asked, smiling. "I may be very late."

"Okay, Dad." She grinned up at him.

He ruffled her hair and walked out.

Carson was watching the interplay with cynical eyes.

"Doesn't your dad ruffle your hair?" she asked sarcastically.

"No. He did lay a chair across it once." He averted his eyes at once, as if the comment had slipped out against his will and embarrassed him.

Carlie tried not to stare. What in the world sort of background did he come from? The violence struck a chord in her. She had secrets of her own from years past.

"Carson," Garon Grier said, pausing at the door. "We may need you at some point." Carson nodded. "I'll be around."

"Thanks."

Garon waved at his brother, smiled at Carlie and let himself out the door.

"Something perking?" Carson asked Cash.

"Quite a lot, in fact. Carlie, hold my calls until I tell you," he instructed.

"Sure thing, Boss."

"Come on in." Cash went ahead into his office.

Carson paused by Carlie's desk and glared at her.

She glared back. "If you don't stop scowling at me, I'm going to ask the chief to frisk you for hand grenades," she muttered.

"Frisk me yourself," he dared softly.

The flush deepened, darkened.

His black eyes narrowed, because he knew innocence when he saw it; it was that rare in his world. "Clueless, aren't you?" he chided.

She lifted her chin and glared back. "My father is a minister," she said with quiet pride.

"Really?"

She frowned, cocking her head. "Excuse me?"

"Are you coming in or not?" Cash asked suddenly, and there was a bite in his voice.

Carson seemed faintly surprised. He followed Cash into the office. The door closed. There were words spoken in a harsh tone, followed by a pause and a suddenly apologetic voice.

Carlie paid little attention. Carson had upset her nerves. She wished her boss would find someone else to talk to. Her job had been wonderful and satisfying until Carson started hanging around the office all the time. Something was going on, something big. It involved local and federal law enforcement—she was fairly certain that the chief's brother didn't just happen by to visit—and somehow, it also involved her father.

She wondered if she could dig any information out of her parent if she went about it in the right way. She'd have to work on that.

Then she recalled that phone call that she'd told her father about, just recently. A male voice had said, simply, "Tell your father, he's next." It had been a chilling experience, one she'd forced to the back of her mind. Now she wondered if all the traffic through her boss's office involved her in some way, as well as her father. The man who'd tried to kill him had died, mysteriously poisoned.

She still wondered why anybody would attack a minister. That remark of Carson's made her curious. She'd said her father was a minister and he'd said, "Really?" in that sarcastic, cold tone of voice. Why?

"I'm a mushroom," she said to herself. "They keep me in the dark and feed me manure." She sighed and went back to work.

She was on the phone with the sheriff's office when Carson left. He went by her desk with only a cursory glance at her, and it was, of all things, placid. Almost apologetic. She lowered her eyes and refused to even look at him.

Even if she'd found him irresistible—and she was trying not to—his reputation with women made her wary of him.

Sure, it was a new century, but Carlie was a smalltown girl and raised religiously. She didn't share the casual attitude of many of her former classmates about physical passion.

She grimaced. It was hard to be a nice girl when people treated her like a disease on legs. In school, they'd made fun of her, whispered about her. One pretty, popular girl said that she didn't know what she was missing and that she should live it up.

Carlie just stared at her and smiled. She didn't say anything. Apparently the smile wore the other girl down because she shrugged, turned her back and walked off to whisper to the girls in her circle. They all looked at Carlie and laughed.

She was used to it. Her father said that adversity was like grit, it honed metal to a fine edge. She'd have liked to be honed a little less.

They were right about one thing; she really didn't know what she was missing. It seemed appropriate, because she'd read about sensations she was supposed to feel with men around, and she didn't feel any of them.

She chided herself silently. That was a lie. She felt them when she was close to Carson. She knew that he was aware of it, which made it worse. He laughed at her, just the way her classmates had laughed at her in school. She was the odd one out, the misfit. She had a reason for her ironclad morals. Many local people knew them, too. Episodes in her childhood had hardened her.

Well, people tended to be products of their upbringing. That was life. Unless she wanted to throw away her ideals and give up religion, she was pretty much settled in her beliefs. Maybe it wasn't so bad being a misfit. Her late grandfather had said that civilizations rested on the bedrock of faith and law and the arts. Some people had to be conventional to keep the mechanism going.

"What was that?" Sheriff Hayes's receptionist asked.

"Sorry." Carlie cleared her throat. She'd been on hold. "I was just mumbling to myself. What were you saying?"

The woman laughed and gave her the information the chief had asked for, about an upcoming criminal case.

She cooked a light supper, just creamed chicken and rice, with green peas, and made a nice apple pie for dessert.

Her father came in, looking harassed. Then he saw the spread and grinned from ear to ear. "What a nice surprise!"

"I know, something light. But I was hungry," she added.

He made a face. "Shame. Telling lies."

She shrugged. "I went to church Sunday. God won't mind a little lie, in a good cause."

He smiled. "You know, some people have actually asked me how to talk to God."

"I just do it while I'm cooking, or working in the yard," Carlie said. "Just like I'm talking to you."

He laughed. "Me, too. But there are people who make hard work of it."

"Why were you in the chief's office today?" she asked suddenly.

He paused in the act of putting a napkin in his lap. His expression went blank for an instant, then it came back to life. "He wanted me to talk to a prisoner for him," he said finally.

She raised both eyebrows.

"Sorry," he said, smoothing out the napkin. "Some things are confidential."

"Okay."

"Let's say grace," he added.

Even though the story was interesting, I was left feeling like something was missing from this book.
By Jael
Diana Palmer's latest romance brings her readers back to fictional Jacobsville, Texas. It includes a lot of cameos from familiar characters from some of her previous books including Cash and Tippy Grier, Garon Grier, Rick Marquez, Hayes Carson and Calhoun Ballenger.

The heroine Carly Blair is virginal, religious, innocent and not very worldly. Carly grew up in in a small town that borders Jacobsville, called Comanche Wells, and instead of going out with friends, she spends her weekends in her bedroom playing an online game called World of Warcraft. Carly may not be very worldly, but she can hold her own against anyone, including the hero, Carson.

Carson is from the Native American tribe Oglala Lakota Sioux and is a former mercenary, who has a past full of secrets, and heavy baggage that prevents him from accepting or giving love. Even though Carson has a reputation as a womanizer and a lone wolf, and throughout the book, Carly is warned about him by various people that know Carson, Carly falls for the hero.

This book is filled with mercenaries, corruption and suspense. Carly and her father are the targets of a corrupt Texas politician, Matthew Helm. Helm will do anything to prevent them from ruining his efforts to get to Washington, DC as a Senator. Along the way, and in spite of the local and state law enforcement trying to protect Carly, she gets kidnapped, and Carson and her former government agent turned minister father rescues her.

Overall, even though this book was filled with a typical Diana Palmer formula (aka shy, virginal, religious heroine and an overtly alpha male hero), it was an okay read. When I first heard that Diana Palmer would be writing and releasing Invincible, I was excited, as the plot sounded great. I can't put my finger on it, but I was left feeling like something was missing from this book.

Typical Diana Palmer
By K. M. Martin
INVINCIBLE was a typical Diana Palmer romance. It was a little repetitious, had a host of characters who all dropped hints about their backstories, and had a romance between the innocent, poor young woman and the cynical older man.

Carlie Blair has spent in life in Comanche Wells, Texas, a suburb of Jacobsville - the town where everyone is apparently a former mercenary. She works for the police chief as a secretary. She has a major crush on Carson who, besides being a mercenary, happens to be Lakota Sioux - giving plenty of opportunity for Palmer to give tidbits about Lakota history and culture. Everyone knows, and tells Carlie, that Carson is too much for her - too cynical, too much like a wolf to ever settle down. Carlie agrees but that doesn't stop her from falling in love with him.

Someone is trying to kill Carlie which unites the mercenaries, government agents, and law enforcement personnel in trying to protect her. Of course, they could also be trying to kill her father - former government covert agent now turned Methodist minister.

The plot of this one is quite convoluted and apparently begun in an earlier book by the author. All the guys on the good side are trying to find evidence to bring down Senator Matthew Helm who is a criminal who used underhanded, and illegal, tactics to gain his political position.

The romance had the usual Palmer tensions. Carlie was a woman of faith who held to old-fashioned values regarding intimacy; Carson was known for the constant parade of beautiful women who came and went in his life. She had faith; he had long since lost his. She had difficulties in her past that could have broken her, but she healed. He had difficulties in his past that he hadn't yet come to terms with. One thing that I particularly notice about Palmer romances is how friendless the female lead is. While everyone in town seems to respect and look out for her, she doesn't have any close female friends. On the other hand, the hero has a whole network of men who are close to him.

This was a good romance for those who like suspense in their books too.

Another mercenary riddled 'romance'
By Avid reader
DP's newest 'romance' "Invincible" is, once more, a rehashing of the last several years' worth of novels she has published. Strong, mysterious hero? Check. Young, uneducated, virginal heroine who somehow knows lots of esoteric information about some (or several) subjects not taught in any small town high school? Check. Ridiculous plot wherein the heroine is in danger? Check. The love of a naive girl saving the hero from his loneliness? Check. Short, choppy sentences, because DP has apparently never heard of this wonderful thing called a compound sentence? Check. Pages of info dumps about online gaming (World of Warcraft)? Check.

This one tries to mix it up a bit, however. The Cartel of Evil Drug Lords (CEDL) is not the primary antagonist, but rather a corrupt politician in bed with the CEDL is the villain of the piece. Of course, everyone and their brother (literally!) from previous related books makes a cameo, guest or starring role appearance, whether it makes sense or not in the context of the plot. We do get a father who is not an abusive jerk (he's reformed and a minister), but he was a neglectful husband and contract assassin! I would read a story about Carlie's father any day, rather than the rehashed junk we've been getting from DP recently.

Carlie, of course, has a tragic incident in her past, and a photographic memory. We are TOLD this over and over, ad nauseum, but never shown any evidence of her photographic memory. Other than that sketch of a dead guy (that occurs in an entirely different book!), of course. Carson also has a tragic past, and gives the heroine a run for her money in the DP tragedy sweepstakes.

Inappropriate women (the blonde snake with a secret of her own), sanctimonious speeches by the heroine (not her minister father), and the endless rehashing of plot points (Carlie has a wonderful memory, Jake is dangerous, Carson is a lone wolf, the politician is pure evil) makes for a tiresome read. The fact that Jacobsville is supposed to be a small town, with only one restaurant, makes it very difficult to believe that it has a real hospital, a full fledged police force, and an FBI office. The town I lived in in Texas (150,000 people and an Air Force Base) did not have an FBI office, and we weren't even close to a big city like San Antonio! Of course, since Jacobsville and Jacobs county seem to have a violent crime rate comparable to that of Detroit, maybe there is a need for the FBI...

I'm not sure that I will be reading any other Diana Palmer books in the future, since she seems to be becoming more preachy with each novel. If it isn't pages of soliloquizing about whatever current event has caught her attention, it is the denigrating of what her heroines consider immoral people-those who have pre-marital relations (gasp! even her last few heroes have been relatively inexperienced), or don't believe in the same things as the heroine. Granted, morals are a good thing, but I don't read romance novels to have the author's opinions on everything from religion to smoking to out of wedlock children rammed down my throat.

Full of potential!
By LeanneC
First things first, don't let my review put you off!!
I did actually find the majority of the story line page turningly good. There's drama, passion, anticipation the odd of bit comedy....all the things you like to see in a good romance mystery thriller type.
Characterisation is spot on. We get to see all their little traits and everyone is an individual in their own rights. Often times one character or another kind of gets left in the background, but not in this book.
The first few chapters and the last couple really had me gripped. I actually very nearly threw my tablet across the room right at the beginning of the epilogue! I just wasn't sure I could handle the pressure of turning the page to see what had happened!
My biggest problem with this book is in the writing style and editing. I found the structure very rhythmical. Some parts were like reading an instruction manual, other parts were worded the way I'd expect new readers books to be. Blake sat on the bed. Blake lifted my leg up. He unzipped one boot and took it off. He swapped legs and took off the other boot...Sorry...not conducive to steamy sex scenes if you ask me!!!
There are also a few head shaking typo errors and a lot of repetition within sentences. I think there might also be a spot of inconsistency in there too, regarding some mail between Kylie and Ana.
I also can't help but feel the author has set up her next couple of books way too easily!! There will be not great surprises in figuring out who they involve.
All in all, for a debut it's a good effort. Ms. Stookes shows a lot of potential and purely because I love Sawyer, I will be reading book 2 in this series...next, in fact!

Steamy and suspenseful
By Honolulubelle
Favorite Quotes:

“His apartment is a revolving door of dumb bimbos.”

“You’re thinking so loud it woke me up, Lee.”

My Review:

I have a new BBF, swoon! Blake is precious, sweet, kind, protective, and multi-talented. Of course he could only be found in a book… Ms. Stookes has made a strong debut with her initial offering of a steamy and suspenseful mystery. She had intriguing twists and turns that I did not see coming, the humorous character interactions and teasing that I enjoy, and likable characters with interesting traits and quirks. I am eager to see what she has planned for her characters in the next book of the series Ultimate Deception.

You can go home again
By Melody Grabeel
Recovering from a life altering even, Kylie Delaney moves back to her home town. The town she left as soon as she could and the same place that held so many memories both good and bad.
Blake Winters has moved back to his hometown is now a detective on the police force after working for the Austin PD. He wanted a change and never imagined it would come if the form of the girl he loved 10 years ago.
The characters are well developed as is the writing. The plot has a few twists and is fast paced. It hooked me from the beginning. I look forward to reading more from this author.
