What If It's True?, by Dixie Burns

“This was a favorite book for me. I grew up in a small town, & it was like going home. Nosy neighbors, small town sheriff, corruption & lots of humor. A real page turner !! I highly recommend this book. Loved it !!” Annette Simmons
“A mature, beautifully written novel, with a wonderfully diverse cast of characters that are real and not the standard southern stereotypes. The romance between the couple in their 50's is clean, sensual and believable without being overtly sexual. The conclusion left me satisfied yet wishing for more. Please don't miss a truly fascinating story.” -- Ebony Diva 3

Dixie Burns has done it again with “What If It’s True?”. Fans of her first novel, “Spit of A Minute”, will recognize the spot-on dialects, a strong sense of place, and colorful characters that make Mrs. Burns a budding master of Southern fiction. Clarissa Clooney, the mysterious divorcee from out-of-town, and Trig Foley, the local police chief, are imperfect heroes drawn together by their desire to help a group of small town girls before it’s too late. Equal parts love story and page-turning thriller, this Southern novel has more twists and turns than a backcountry road. But the truth is, Cedar Hill’s tale of romantic suspense, perversion, and corruption could take place in any small town.

From the Author
Cedar Hill is a good town, a solid town. Neat and efficient in all its circumstances and the citizens go along to get along. "Nothing" happens over and over. That is until Clarissa Clooney moves to town. A recent, fifty-something divorcee, she is looking to start all over where nobody knows her name. She suffers the fate of all newcomers in a small Southern town where tongues wag, but few heads think.
Trigger Ray Foley, born in Cedar Hill, is the city's Chief of Police. He and most of Cedar Hill's residents live in a comfortable rut. The explosive growth of a new church, lead by a flamboyant minister begins to ruffle the surfaces of tranquility. Suspicion and sordid rumors appear to move in with Ms. Clooney causing Chief Foley and Clarissa to do a little more than cross paths.
The victims do not act like victims. They are not likable or trustworthy. And what do we do with an unlikable victim? What do we do with an outlandish rumor? Like sand in our shoes, we ignore it. Until, the grit in our soles whispers, "What if it's true?"

About the Author
Dixie Burns is a fifth generation native Nashvillian. "What If It's True?" is her second novel. Her first, "Spit of a Minute" has exceeded expectations and continues to place in the Top 100 Amazon Saga category."The TV was talking behind my back as a wiped down the kitchen counters. They were telling of the most horrific abuse of small boys. My skin crawled listening to the story unfold and I wondered how anybody could have known about these monsters and not done something. I had to ask myself if I'd heard rumors like these would I have taken any notice. Then I remembered. I had. What If It's True? came out of those rumors."

A stellar novel filled with unique character and a mystery that will intrigue you until the very last page
By E.A. Gray
As a lover of mysteries and suspense I was referred to this book by a work associate who said they were impressed by it. After digesting the material over a long and comfortable weekend, I must say that I can’t agree more. From the vibrant descriptions and progressive story line all the way to the unique and three dimensional characters, this novel was a stellar read. So many novels set in southern locations seem to be saturated with caricatured people and a stilted dialog that aches with falseness; not so here. The characters exposition rings true as if you’re hearing it straight from someone’s mouth, making suspension of disbelief during the entire read something so easy that you just happily ease right into the novel.

From Trigger to Clarissa, I thoroughly enjoyed the people that populated the small town. Ms. Sally was fun to read and the murder mystery itself was palpable, building to a crescendo that thoroughly satisfies. Also, the writing was succinct and never veered off onto unnecessary descriptions or into areas that took away from the primary story. All said, this is one of the best books I’ve read so far this year. I recently discovered Ms. Burns has written another novel called Spit of a Minute. Now that I’ve finished this one, I can’t wait to read her other one this after my work week is over. Here’s to another fun weekend.

Loved the small town suspense
By TFLReader
I love a good suspense novel. The premise of building a story around small town gossip is a great one and author Dixie Burns applies her talent well with "What If It's True?". The story of Clarissa, who moves to small town Cedar Hill after a divorce to "start over". Of course, being a small town, people talk. Rumors start to fly as a new church and its pastor, Pastor Scarvone, becomes quite popular. Clarissa and the town's police chief become involved in more than just the controversy in this very intriguing suspense. I loved every minute of this story - the mystery, the characters, the dialogue and especially the small town setting. Very well written and engaging.

A really, really good read!
By Baker-Wright
I kept putting off the reading of this book so my expectations were very low. The synopsis of a small, southern town with s good ole boy sheriff was a turn off but I was down to two books and didn't want to do a search for another book. So I began this book and I am so very glad I did!

The plot was good and believable. Character development was the best I had encountered for a long time. And Dixie Burns is right up there as one of the best. I called a friend of mine who is an avid reader and recommended she get the book on her kindle. I hardly ever recommend a book to her because she is very particular and I don't want to offend her. She called me the next day - she no only bought the book , she had read it straight through!

I highly recommend this book - good plot, good writing, good character development, and an ending that gives the reader a great deal of reward - the author doesn't leave loose ends!

Review
"Brown's latest is chock full of ruggedly handsome boys with a plucky heroine at the story's center. Brown's modern storytelling is humorous, heartwarming, and full of sass and spunk. The banter between Jill and Sawyer is infectious, and the chemistry between them sizzles. Add a solid, well-crafted plot filled with distinctive characters, and readers will be left with one entertaining read." - RT Book Reviews, 4 Stars

Chapter 1

The scariest sight in the world is a woman's finger on the trigger of a sawed-off shotgun. Sawyer O'Donnell was not an idiot. When he saw the big hole in the barrel of that gun aimed right at his heart, he dropped the broom and threw up his palms.

"Lady, you might want to put that shotgun down. I'm not havin' no part of this feud business. Let's talk about it," he whispered.

The gun stayed right where it was, and his hands didn't drop an inch.

Gladys hadn't said a damn thing about a crazy woman in Burnt Boot when he was hired on as foreman of Fiddle Creek Ranch. Maybe the redhead with the bloodshot green eyes was a member of one of the feuding families. Hopefully, she wasn't out to shoot first and ask questions later.

"Who in the hell are you, and why are you in my bunkhouse?" she asked bluntly.

"Your bunkhouse?" Sawyer raised his voice. "Lady, you made a wrong turn back there at crazy and demented. This is my bunkhouse, and you are damn sure not welcome here. So put that blunderbuss away and take your ass back to wherever you came from."

"Yes, it is my bunkhouse. I told Aunt Gladys I'd do my own cleaning when I got here. She said the door would be open and she'd meet me here," she said.

His hands came down. "Aunt Gladys? Who are you? She didn't tell me that anyone else would be living here."

Deep-throated laughter preceded Gladys into the bunkhouse. "She'd be my great-niece, Jill Cleary, and I didn't know until last night that she was coming to Burnt Boot. I didn't tell you because I wanted y'all to meet before either one of you went to jumpin' ship." She clamped a hand on the gun and lowered it until the barrel pointed at the ground. "Darlin', you got to load a gun, or it ain't worth a damn. You made good time. I wasn't expectin' you for another hour. Saw you comin' in, but I had one more bale of hay to kick off the back of the truck before I could get here. Now give me a hug and meet my brand-new foreman, Sawyer O'Donnell. He'll be sharin' this bunkhouse with you."

Jill propped the gun against the back of a worn sofa and rolled up on her toes to hug her aunt. "I'm not sharing my living quarters with a stranger. I'd rather pitch a tent by the river."

Gladys pushed her back but held on to her shoulders. "In January?"

"Then I'll stay in the house with you," Jill said. "You said you'd hired a foreman that was living on Salt Draw. Why didn't you tell me he was living in the bunkhouse?"

"Same reason I didn't rush down here and tell him that you'd be living in it too. You'd have bitched. He would have quit. You've lived in bunkhouses before now, and so has he. Looks like only two in this big old place would be a blessing after living with twenty or thirty people. And, darlin', I love you, and someday you'll inherit all I've got and all Polly has got, too, but you are not livin' with me. Not with your temper. And, besides, you said when you called last night that you wanted to live in the bunkhouse, so that's what you are going to do."

Sawyer looked from one woman to the other. Gladys was a tall, lanky woman with a touch of white in her black hair. High cheekbones and dark eyes said she had some Native American blood. She'd said she was past eighty, and that's why she needed help on her small ranch. But she damn sure didn't look it or act it, either. Jill had a mop of wavy shoulder-length red hair, green eyes, a cute little nose, and full lips made for kissing. There was no way in hell they could be related.

Gladys read his mind. "Yes, Sawyer, we really are kinfolk. Jill is mine and Polly's only living relative and she has come to Burnt Boot to work for us. And this bunkhouse is big enough for the two of you."

Sawyer wasn't too sure about that last statement. The bunkhouse had looked huge when he moved in, but a woman living in it would damn sure make it smaller in a hurry.

Travis Tritt's old song "T-R-O-U-B-L-E" played through his mind. The verse that kept running around on a continuous loop said that the men were going to love her and the women were going to hate her, because she reminded them of everything they were never going to be. It said that it could be the beginning of another war, because the world wasn't ready for nothing like her.

With those tight-fittin' jeans attempting to cover up that cute little rounded butt and cinching in a small waist, Jill was sure enough trouble with a capital T in Burnt Boot, Texas. The Gallagher and the Brennan men would both love her because she was so damn pretty, but the minute they found out she was in line to inherit Fiddle Creek-well, look out, Burnt Boot.

According to what Verdie had told him already, the feud was already hotter'n a Texas wildfire. Naomi Gallagher, the head she-coon of that clan, was out for Brennan blood. Throwing Jill in that mix would be like throwing a five-gallon bucket of gasoline on the fire. Both families wanted the land separating their properties for the water rights that ran through Gladys's ranch, and even if they didn't, one look at Jill and they'd forget the ranch and want her.

"You two get settled in, and we'll have a long talk in the morning. Welcome home to Burnt Boot, Jill darlin'. Me and Polly are glad that you've finally come home to roost for good." Gladys gave her niece another hug and whistled all the way to her truck.

The engine of the truck had barely died down, and Sawyer was still trying to make sense of the whole scene, when it sounded as if Gladys was coming back. Thank God! She'd been teasing about Jill not living at the house with her and now she was coming back to get her.

A truck door slammed, and Sawyer hurried to throw open the door. Hell, he'd even carry Jill out there, shotgun and all, and put her into the truck.

It wasn't Gladys standing on the other side of the screen door. It was Betsy Gallagher.

"Evenin', Sawyer. I heard you'd gotten moved in. Thought I'd stop by and ask you to Sunday dinner at my granny's place," she said.

Red-haired and cute as a button, Betsy was a member of one of the feuding families in Burnt Boot. He'd been warned about taking sides in any way, form, or shape, but with the mayhem that had just happened, his mind went blank and he couldn't think of a reason why he couldn't go to dinner with her.

"Aren't you going to invite me in?" Betsy asked.

"It's a mess in here." He stepped out on the porch.

"I heard that Jill Cleary was coming back to work for Gladys."

"She is." Sawyer still racked his brain, trying to come up with a plausible excuse not to go to dinner with her.

Betsy ran a hand down his arm and smiled up at him. "I expect you have lots to do, so I should be going. You can take me home from church on Sunday and have dinner with us, right?"

"I suppose," he said.

"Good. I'll see to it you have a good time." She winked slyly.

He went back inside, threw himself on the sofa with a groan, and covered his eyes with his arm.

"What happened?" Jill asked.

A second knock brought Sawyer to a sitting position, but Jill was already on the way to the door. "I'll get it," she threw over her shoulder.

"Hello, Jill," a masculine voice said.

Sawyer fell back and covered his eyes again. At least it wasn't another woman out there asking for him.

"I heard you made it to the ranch this afternoon," he said. "I'm Quaid Brennan. We met years ago when you were a little girl and visited Gladys. I thought I'd come over and invite you to come to the Brennan Sunday dinner after church, and I'd love it if you helped me teach Sunday school and sat with us in church. We'd sure enjoy making you welcome to Burnt Boot."

"Sure, and thank you."

"Good. I'll pick you up at nine for Sunday school, then?"

"That will be great."

She shut the door and melted into a rocking chair beside the sofa. "Shit! Aunt Gladys is going to scalp me. She said I wasn't supposed to get involved with either family, but I couldn't think of a single excuse."

"I know exactly how you feel. But if you sit with them in church, everyone is going to think you've joined up with that side," Sawyer moaned.

"Dammit!"

"Hey, we'll make it through the day and be home in the middle of the afternoon. Let's get back to our cleaning and figure out an excuse if anyone else comes around."

Another knock on the door stopped him before he could finish the sentence.

"Your turn," she said.

He hauled himself up off the sofa, crossed the room, and slung the door open, praying that this time it would be Gladys, but it was Kinsey Brennan. He looked past her to the third truck in the driveway, to see Tyrell Gallagher sitting in the driver's seat. Shit fire! Each side had sent a double team to Fiddle Creek to gang up on them.

"Hey, Sawyer. We haven't been formally introduced, but I met you at your cousin's wedding reception. I came to invite you to Sunday dinner." She smiled.

Tall, willowy, blond, and brown-eyed, she looked like a runway model, but Sawyer had the perfect excuse all ready.

"I'm going to dinner with Betsy Gallagher," he said.

"Oh, well then, you must give us equal time, darlin'." She opened the screen door and stepped inside. Before he could take a single step back, her breasts were brushing against his chest. "You have to come to supper at the Brennan household. It'll be more private anyway without the whole family there." She picked up his hand and wrote a number in the palm. "This is my cell phone number. Call me at a quarter to six, and I'll talk to you the whole way and give you instructions on how to get to River Bend. See you then." She blew a kiss off the tips of her fingers and then touched his lips with her forefinger.

"Holy shit!" Jill said. "What's going on?"

"News travels fast in a small town. They know you have arrived, and they're going to swamp you with dates," he said.

"But why?"

"Fiddle Creek, and you're a damn fine-lookin' woman."

"But why you?"

"They just want to get rid of the threat. If one of those women can snag me, then that's one cowboy out of their way," he said.

"You sure about that?"

A heavy knock landed on the door.

"I bet you dollars to cow patties that's a Gallagher wanting to take you to Sunday dinner," he said.

She grimaced. "Maybe it's for you."

"If it is, tell the woman I've got the plague."

* * *

Jill answered the door, and there stood a tall, dark cowboy with pretty brown eyes. Lord, please let this be a Bible seller who's lost his way and is looking for directions, she prayed.

Her prayer fell on deaf ears.

"Miss Jill Cleary, I swear you have grown up to be a gorgeous woman. The last time I saw you, you were in pigtails. You won't remember me, probably. I'm Tyrell Gallagher. I heard you'd made it to town and I wanted to ask you to Sunday dinner." His Texas drawl was sexy as hell, and he was easy on the eyes.

"Thank you for coming by and for the invitation, but I've already got dinner plans for Sunday," she said.

"Well, then, darlin', you could invite me inside," Tyrell said.

"It's a mess in here." She used Sawyer's line and stepped out on the porch like he'd done.

He pinned her against the rough wood wall of the bunkhouse with a hand on either side of her. "I can't change your mind about dinner?"

"Sorry, but the plans are made." She felt like a caged cat and fought the urge to holler for Sawyer to come save her.

"Then supper? We have two meals at Wild Horse on Sunday. Supper is buffet instead of a sit-down dinner, but you can still meet the family," he whispered close enough that she caught the faint scent of peppermint gum over the top of whiskey.

"Okay," she said. "What time?"

"I'll pick you up at six. What's your favorite color of roses?"

"I don't have a favorite," she said.

He took a step back and grinned. "Then red it is. I'll see you Sunday."

She hurried into the house, and Sawyer was gone from the sofa. Surely he hadn't slipped out the back door and left her alone. I take back everything I thought about him when I first got here, Lord. Please don't let him be gone. I'm going to need a friend and lots of support, she prayed again.

She had a moment of panic until he came from the kitchen with two opened bottles of beer in his hands. He handed one to her and downed a third of the other one before he went back to the sofa and sat down on one end.

"I thought you'd left me to the wolves all by myself. It was a scary moment. I don't even know you, Sawyer O'Donnell, but please promise you'll stick around."

"I gave Gladys my word I'd stay for a year," he said.

She exhaled loudly. "We got off on the wrong foot. I'm tired and weary from driving and worried that I made the wrong decision in coming here, so I'm sorry for aiming my gun at you."

"Same here. I'm not a bit sorry that I took this job, but I wish to hell Fiddle Creek wasn't right in the middle of two feuding families," he said.

"I'm going to supper at the Gallaghers' ranch and dinner at the Brennans'. At least no one can say I'm choosing sides," she said with a long sigh as she plopped down on the other end of the sofa and kicked off her boots. "I shouldn't sit down, or I'll never get up and get this cleaning done. My feet hurt. My head is aching, and damn, Sawyer, why did I just agree to do two things I don't want to do?"

He picked up her feet and put them in his lap, massaging the soles through her socks. "I'm going to Wild Horse for dinner and River Bend for supper, but believe me, it's not happening but this one time," he said. "I'll be ready for them next time around."

She dramatically threw a hand over her eyes. "Next time? Shit! We're going to have to outrun them again? That feels so good. Did you ever think of leaving ranchin' and going into massage work?"

"No, ma'am. My heart is in ranchin', but it makes a person plumb cranky to have achin' feet." He cocked his head to one side, drew his eyes down, and asked, "What is that noise?"

"Sounds like thunder. Maybe if it rains, they'll all stay on their asses at home and leave us alone so we can get this place cleaned up before dark. Thanks for the foot rub. It really did help."

He cocked his ear to one side. "It's not thunder. That's cattle and four-wheelers."

She set her beer down and ran to the back door. Sure enough, there were four-wheelers out in the distance. She couldn't make out who was driving them, but she distinctly counted six.

Sawyer went the other way-to the front door. "I see three four-wheelers out on the far side, going toward the store. What the hell are they doing on Fiddle Creek?"

That's when they saw the cattle stampeding toward the bunkhouse. She jumped back and slammed the door shut. "Shit fire, Sawyer! What is going on?"

"It's a full-out stampede, but when they reach the bunkhouse, it'll break their momentum and slow 'em down. Gladys is going to have a hissy. I see River Bend brands all mixed up with ours, and I was right, there's Wild Horse brands in there too. Both sides must've had the same idea."

"To cut fences and create havoc?" she asked.

"That's the general definition of a feud," he answered.

Gladys, Quaid Brennan, and Tyrell Gallagher all arrived at the same time, braking so hard that gravel spewed all over the front of the bunkhouse.

"You son of a bitch." Tyrell jumped out of his truck and bowed up to Quaid, who had barely gotten his boots on the ground. "Why did you cut our fence and cause this mess?"

Gladys stepped between them.

Jill grabbed her boots and headed outside, yelling at Sawyer the whole way. "Go help her. I swear, if one of them throws a punch and hits her, I'll shoot him dead."

Sawyer didn't hesitate. He and Jill might have gotten off to a bad start, but she was right. If one of those fools hurt Gladys, she could shoot him, and Sawyer would carry the body down to the Red River and toss it into the water.

Sawyer joined Gladys. "Looks like you two need to use your energy to sort out your cattle rather than fightin'."

"That's right," Gladys said. "I'm damn sure not sortin' them out, but I will be doin' a count tomorrow, and if a single one of Fiddle Creek cows is missin', you'll both answer to me. Now get busy roundin' up your herds, and then get the hell off Fiddle Creek."

"Don't worry, Miz Gladys. I'm going out there to make sure that anything with our brand stays right here," Sawyer said.

"And I'm going with him," Jill said from the porch.

Gladys nodded. "And you had best fix your own fences too."

Without a word to her or to each other, both cowboys headed toward their trucks. They had phones to their ears as they backed away from the bunkhouse.

"Welcome to Burnt Boot." Gladys laughed. "I'm glad I hired y'all, because I'm going back to the store and leaving you to take care of it."

"My truck or yours?" Jill asked.

"I'll drive if you'll bring that shotgun with you."

"You got it. And, Sawyer, it's beginning to look like we'd best stick together if we're going to survive living here."

He held out his hand. "Deal."

She shook it and then went back inside to get her gun.

The truck engine was running when she got back. Sawyer put it in gear and drove toward the herd of cattle right smack in the middle of the Fiddle Creek pasture behind the bunkhouse.

"We need to be cleanin', not settling feud wars," she said.

"I know, but here we are. Speaking of cleanin', I didn't know that you were moving into the bunkhouse. Thought I had it all to myself, so I unloaded my things in the foreman's bedroom. That comes with a private bathroom. I can move them to the other side if you want," he said.

"I remember the bunkhouse very well, and there are two bedrooms on the other side. One will serve as my office. Let's get a few things clear though, Sawyer. I don't cook, but I will take my turn at cleaning."

He nodded. "You don't cook or you don't like to cook?"

"I never learned."

"Well, I did, so we're in pretty good shape there."

* * *

His dark brown eyes met hers over the top of the console separating the two seats. He'd never been attracted to redheads or green-eyed women. He'd always gone for willowy blonds with pretty blue eyes, but something vulnerable in her eyes said that she needed a friend. And that light sprinkling of freckles across her nose was downright adorable.

"This has been a hell of a day. I expected to have the whole place cleaned and maybe go grab a beer tonight down at Polly's," he said.

"I had the same idea." She smiled. "But don't plans get turned around quick? Here they come."

"Where?"

She pointed. "Four-wheelers from both sides."

Sawyer got out of the truck and stood at the front, arms crossed over his chest until they arrived. They cut the engines-Brennans on one side of his truck, Gallaghers on the other. He saw Betsy and Kinsey and Quaid and Tyrell. The only sounds in the pasture were a bunch of heaving cows still trying to catch their breath from running and the occasional disgruntled snort from a bull or two. But the tension was so thick that a good sharp machete couldn't have split it.

"Okay, this is the way it is," he said. "I'm the foreman here, and to avoid any more trouble, the Brennans are going to gather up their cows first and head them back to River Bend. Then you Gallaghers can get yours out from the Fiddle Creek cattle and take them to Wild Horse."

"Why do the Brennans go first?" Betsy asked.

"Because B comes before G in the alphabet."

He heard Jill chuckle as she crawled out of the truck, the shotgun in her hands.

"And why has she got a gun?" Kinsey asked.

"To keep things nice and friendly," Sawyer said.

"We didn't do any of this," Quaid said.

"Yeah, right," Kinsey shot across the twelve feet separating them.

"Don't you think it's strange that both fences were cut and cattle from both ranches stampeded?" Kinsey stared right at Sawyer.

"I don't give a shit," Jill said. "Your cows are mixed up with ours, and we're being kind enough to let you take them home. Now quit your bitchin' and get on with it. Sawyer and I haven't even unpacked yet, and we've got things to do other than babysit you people."

The Brennans started the tedious job of rounding up fifty head of cattle. Tyrell Gallagher started toward Jill, but she shook her head. "Not today, cowboy. Today it's all business."

He turned and said something to Betsy that made her laugh loudly before the two of them sat down on the cold ground behind a four-wheeler. Their tone said they were brewing up some kind of trouble, but Jill didn't care. Her feet were hurting again, and she and Sawyer had too much to do for her to get another foot massage tonight.

"When we get back to the bunkhouse, if anyone else knocks on our door, one of us is going to shoot them," Jill said just loud enough for Sawyer's ears.

"My gun isn't loaded. You shoot, and I'll get out the shovel to dig the hole to bury them."

"It's a deal," she said. "I'm too tired to dig, but I think I can still shoot pretty straight. Man, who would have thought the day would be like this when it dawned?"

"Ain't it the truth?" He nodded. "How long did you drive?"

"I left at four o'clock this morning from the southwest corner of Texas and drove until, what time is it?"

He took a phone from his shirt pocket and checked. "Four thirty. Be dark in an hour."

She laid the shotgun on the hood of the truck and pulled gloves out of her pocket. "There's a nip to the wind. Feels like snow."

"Yep," he said. He waited until the Brennans were halfway across the pasture with their herd before he gave the Gallaghers permission to start getting their cattle together.

"They don't like taking orders," she said.

"Maybe it will make them mad enough to leave me alone the rest of the time I'm here."

"We've eaten our bullfrog," she said.

"What's that?" he asked.

She smiled. "It's an old adage. Wake up every morning and eat a bullfrog first thing, and the rest of the day will go just fine."

"Honey, I'm afraid we've just eaten his scrawny old toes."

"Then I'm going to need a lot of help."

"Me too, Jill Cleary. Me too," he said.

The Trouble with Texas Cowboys
By K. Branfield
The Trouble with Texas Cowboys, the second installment in Carolyn Brown’s Burnt Boot, Texas series, is another sweet and fun-filled romance. After their inauspicious first meeting, Sawyer O’Donnell and Jill Cleary team up to avoid getting caught in the middle of a longstanding feud between the Gallaghers and the Brennans.

Jill and Sawyer have not had time to settle into their new home or jobs on Fiddle Creek Ranch before disaster strikes. Jill’s aunt is injured and in addition to their ranching duties, Jill and Sawyer are also busy manning the local bar and town store. They easily handle their workload but keeping out of the clutches of the rival families? More work than all three of their jobs combined, but Jill and Sawyer quickly devise a plan to steer clear of the determined families. The feud promptly heats up but so does an unanticipated romance between Jill and Sawyer.

Jill and Sawyer are both fairly laidback and their relationship begins with an easygoing friendship. After they each attend one dinner with the rival families, they both know that they do not want to take sides in the feud. The Brennans and Gallaghers are pretty relentless in trying to convince them otherwise but Jill and Sawyer successfully avoid being alone with any of them. Constantly thrown together, Jill and Sawyer are both surprised by their unexpected attraction, but instead of fighting it, they agree to see where it leads them. Their resulting romance is slow growing but very sweet and steamy.

The Gallagher/Brennan feud is instrumental in bringing Jill and Sawyer together and it is a big part of the storyline. The various family members are involved in some pretty crazy and over the top schemes that keep everyone plenty stirred up. There are also plenty of cat fights between the women and fistfights and brawls erupt between the men. The feud is a unique device to keep Jill and Sawyer united in their efforts to stay neutral, but their romance is sometimes eclipsed by all of the fighting and scheming of the Gallaghers and Brennans.

The Trouble with Texas Cowboys is a light-hearted addition to the Burnt Boot, Texas series. Jill and Sawyer are engaging, likable characters and their romance is delightfully angst free. An overall witty and charming love story with just a touch of drama, this latest offering from Carolyn Brown is sure to be a hit with anyone who enjoys contemporary Western romances.

More Burnt Boot Fun!
By Margie Hager
I have never met a Carolyn Brown cowboy that I didn't like. Sawyer O'Donnell is no exception. He has all the cowboy traits that make up the ideal cowboy. Plus he has some of the best lines I have ever read in one of Carolyn's books. The heroine in this story, Jill Cleary is written so well that I can picture her perfectly in my mind. Jill seems to fit just right with Sawyer and the two of them together just make me want to swoon reading about them. Then there's the big feud and all the attention both characters get from the feuding families. The way Sawyer and Jill have each other's back to get out of some hairy situations with the feuding families plays so well in this story. If you like hot cowboys, strong feisty heroines and lots of laughs you will love this book.

A fantastic surprise!
By Shirley Quinones
This book was such an unexpected surprise. I loved it!

Withing moments of arriving at her Aunt's ranch, Jill Cleary's finds herself in the middle of a feud between the neighboring ranches and sharing a bunkhouse with a sexy foreman. She wasn't expecting to be in either situation but it's being drawn to be tall, dark and handsome man that worries her the most.

Sawyer is looking forward to working on Fiddle Creek Ranch. He's aware of the feud between the neighboring ranches and has no plans to get in the middle of that mess. But like Jill, he finds himself right smack in the middle of it and trying his best to keep his attraction to his red-headed roommate in check.

Soon these two form an alliance to try to keep themselves out of the feud. Now if they can only keep out of each other's arms.

I can't do a proper review about this story without giving too much away. The Trouble with Texas Cowboys had:

- a simmering romance that sizzled as the story progressed.
- dialogue that was funny, witty and flirty.
- a handsome cowboy that was easygoing and sweet with a bit of alpha-male in him.
- and a cowgirl that gave as good as she got but hid a little vulnerability within her.

And all this with Jill and Sawyer right smack in the middle of a feud.

And that is what I liked most about this book. Carolyn Brown did a wonderful job of drawing the reader right to the middle of the feud and the romance that was blossoming between Jill and Sawyer without taking away from either element. I enjoyed the Gallagher and the Brennan's antics, the flirty banter between Jill and Sawyer and the subtle emotions that were always present as they each battled their feelings for one another.

The Trouble with Texas Cowboys is the second book in the Burnt Boot series, but you don't need to read the first book to enjoy this one to the fullest.

I really liked the book and the four main characters. I wish the book had been longer. Hopefully, Author Keysha will not take to long putting out book 2. I hate sequels, especially when it takes a long time for them to be released. Good storytelling though.

Regency Road Trip, a novella, by Joyce Harmon

Two friends join forces in a quest to find a lost heir – but what they discover surprises them both.

After a long absence and a premature declaration of death, Colonel Lord Salford returns from the dead to find his estate in ruins, thanks to his cousin and presumptive heir, a gambler and a scoundrel. In order to protect his estate from future ruin by his corrupt cousin (and avoid a marriage of convenience), the Earl enlists the aid of his friend, retired governess Eliza Merryhew, in a quest to locate a missing heir.
Miss Merryhew’s former pupil set her up for life, and never has she been more comfortable....or more bored. Years of travel, while often precarious and even dangerous, gave her a taste for adventure, and now she is restless with the sedate gentility of her daily routine. So she is eager to join Lord Salford on his mission.
To keep their search from public notice, they travel incognito -- Miss Merryhew as a Baron’s widow, and the Earl as her devoted manservant Gervase.
Together these two will prove you’re never too old for adventure, or for romance.
(This novella follows the adventure of secondary characters introduced in my first Regency romance, A Feather To Fly With, and the action in this story takes place between the final chapter and the epilog of that previous work.)

Fluffy novella in the traditional Regency style.
By OLT
(Maybe 3.5. It's very short.) I'm old enough (and more) to remember the day when traditional, sweet, clean Regencies were published in small paperbacks, in particular the Signet Regencies of the 1980s and 1990s. Joyce Harmon is a 21st-century writer who has managed to get down the style, tone and spirit of those oldies, first with her Regency A Feather To Fly With and now this companion novella.

You don't have to have read FEATHER to enjoy this but if you have you will enjoy meeting old friends. This is short and therefore doesn't go into much depth but what's here is entertaining. Lord Salford, ex-military man believed to be dead in the Peninsular Wars, finally came back to discover that his heir had taken over his properties and was actually pillaging and plundering, so to speak, taking monies out for his profligate life. (This happened prior to the novella but Harmon gets you caught up nicely here.)

Fortunately Salford is now back and is trying to recoup his losses and get the estate back to its original condition but he needs to find a better heir. He himself is a 59-year-old widower with only one grown daughter, so his sister and daughter want him to marry someone of good breeding and of "breeding" age to produce that requisite son.

Salford finds this idea not to his taste and instead starts investigating a branch of the family which seems to have disappeared but which would have family members closer in line to inherit the title after Salford. So he's off to investigate. That's the road trip of the title. He takes along good friend Miss Merryhew, a 50-something ex-governess, to help with the search

Now I shall say no more. This is a short novella so it must not be spoiled. I will only tell you that it has some funny moments (not LOL exactly) and that there are two romances, one young couple and one older couple.

This download also includes an excerpt from Harmon's upcoming full-length sequel to FEATHER, and it has the title THE WORLD'S A STAGE. No link here on Amazon so far.

This was happy reading...
By lark
OLT didn't leave me with anything inspirational to say about this little story so I'll just say ditto to what she said.

True, there was no massive character development...the story was too short for that. But I knew the characters well enough to be satisfied. They were fun to be around. Their trip on a quest for a new heir was fun and the two romances were delightful.

(I received this via Kindle Unlimited.)

Happy reading! :)

Romance Lite
By katie kofemug
This was actually the book that set me off on Ye Olde Biddy Quest. Reading about a delightful woman of intelligence in her late 50s actually having a romance with a man that has lived on both sides of rigid class system, not to mention served his country, family, and assisted his friends in their hour of need was something I couldn't wait to do.

Ms. Harmon still wows me with her writing. The crisp tones and the atmosphere is perfectly in tune. She has respect for the historical accuracy and I greatly admire her bold plotting that she conceals with the lace of a rapid developing twist here, turn there, and humor everywhere. Her characters are fun, painted with broad strokes and behave just as you expect - until they don't and then, of course, you knew they would grow that way all along.

That said, I avoid novellas. They never satisfy me and leave me feeling out of sorts. For this reason I very seldom review them unless it is an accidental purchase, which is something that happens now and then. In those cases, I try to be as gracious as my mother would expect me to be if someone served me half of a piece of pie left over from day before Thursday. I knew this was a novella when I bought it ... but ... it was Joyce Harmon and a chance to enjoy Merry and the General again, so I snatched it up.

Unfortunately, actual romance between Merry and the General happens off page and must be read between the lines of ensuring comfort, planning strategy, and amusing commentary. Perhaps I expected too much. Yes, these are mature, restrained people, not given to excess anything but come on ... they couldn't have one kiss? Would it risk squicking out the youngsters so it got chopped in the edit? ::sigh::

And though I enjoyed the characters of Letitia and Dr. Marrow ... I hated them the instant I realized they would steal the thunder of my favorite couple. I usually enjoy multiple romances in one book. I'm not stingy - I want everyone to be happily-ever-after'd. But since this is a novella and only 83% of the book, I really wanted to focus on the Road Trip and the Romance of Merry and the General. Instead, I felt cheated for both stories and used when I realized 17% of the book was a sample for a book I'd already bought.

It's the way things are now. You pay to be enticed to your next purchase. In this case I paid that $2.99 price because I respect the author's work and well ... I admit, I have yet to read the next book though it is on my reader because I just can't wipe the bitterness from my heart, yet. This in no way impeded my enjoyment of Katherine When She Smiles.

So, my dears, it is a sweet story, with excellent writing and two exceedingly lite-romances packed snugly in one. Don't expect more than that and you should be fine. And I thank Ms. Harmon for setting me off on a quest that might not end any time soon....

A s much as Heather Sloan loved a bright New England winter day, chasing a puppy through knee-deep snow in seventeen degrees wasn't her idea of fun. Rohan—the runaway puppy, a twelve-week-old golden retriever—wasn't quickly tiring of his romp or sticking to the plowed driveway and shoveled walks, either. Not a chance. She spotted his tracks, leading through the woods straight for quiet, frozen Echo Lake.

She wasn't following a rabbit or deer by mistake. They definitely were puppy tracks. She paused, noting that the trail veered to the right, parallel to the lake. Something must have caught Rohan's attention. A bird, a breeze, a noise.

Great.

Heather followed the tracks through a deeper drift, but they disappeared under the low-hanging, snow-laden branches of two gnarly hemlocks. Rohan could easily fit under them. She couldn't. The trees grew so close together that trying to squeeze between them meant getting snow down her back. Going around them would risk a delay in finding the tracks again.

She was already cold. She wasn't dressed for a puppy rescue. Ankle boots, leather gloves, a wool scarf and her three-quarter-length chocolate-brown wool coat. Why? Of all days, why hadn't she worn her Car-hartt jacket and L.L. Bean boots? It wasn't as if her attire would impress Vic Scarlatti, the newly retired diplomat whose renovations she was overseeing. His 1912 lake house was out of sight now, up through the trees past a small guesthouse. He was searching the garage, shed and porches. Adrienne Portale, the wine-expert daughter of one of Vic's Foreign Service friends, was searching the house, in case Rohan hadn't slipped outside, after all.

But he had, and he would be in serious trouble in this cold if Heather didn't get to him soon. What was a little snow down her back? With five older brothers, it wasn't anything she wasn't used to. They'd had an epic snowball fight on New Year's Day.

She plunged between the hemlocks, moving as fast as she could, but there was no way to avoid disturbing the snow clinging to the evergreen branches. She got a spray in her face and a clump down her back and almost lost a boot, but when she emerged on the other side of the hemlocks, she was practically standing in Rohan's tracks.

She went still, quieting her breathing as she listened. Her cheeks were numb, and her fingertips and toes ached with the cold. She'd pulled her scarf over her head as best she could in lieu of a hat, but it was loose now, one end dangling down her front. The late-January afternoon sky was cloudless, the air as crisp and clear and cold as it had been since the latest storm earlier in the week. She glanced to her left toward the snow-covered lake. Echo Lake wasn't big, but it was one of the largest lakes in out-of-the-way Knights Bridge, Massachusetts.

There.

Heather spun around at a sound up ahead and forced herself not to move. She listened, positive she heard something besides her own breathing.

Yips.

A high-pitched, mournful cry. It had to be Rohan.

With a mix of worry and relief, she surged in the direction of the distressed yips and cries, following the tracks through bare-limbed maples and oaks and past white pines. The ground was uneven, the snow sometimes drifting up past her knees. Snowshoes or back-country skis would have helped, but she had left hers in her truck and Vic wasn't much on winter sports. "I like looking at the snow," he'd told her. "I don't necessarily like going out in it for fun."

She came to a shallow, rocky brook that emptied into the lake but now was mostly frozen. Water trickled and swirled in a few spots among the snow and ice where the current was stronger.

"Rohan," Heather called softly, not wanting to startle him by yelling. "Where are you, buddy?"

She heard panting then a whimper. She eased closer to the edge of the brook and peered upstream. Her heart jumped when she saw a golden ball of fur—little Rohan, struggling to climb out from the midst of the water, snow, ice and rocks.

"Oh, Rohan. You are in a mess, aren't you?"

Trees crowded the bank, and it was steeper up where Rohan was stuck. Getting to him wasn't going to be easy. Staying close to the brook, she grabbed hold of saplings and branches, using them to help her keep her balance in the difficult conditions.

Once she was parallel to Rohan, he let out an eager, full-fledged bark.

He must have frolicked his way out here, got stuck in the ice and snow and had run out of steam. He was, after all, only a puppy. Heather could see there was no way he could get out of his predicament with just a bit of encouragement from her. She would have to grab him—preferably without ending up trapped in the cold brook herself.

"Easy, Rohan," she said, holding on to a thin tree and reaching with her free hand to the shivering puppy. "Let's get you warm and safe, okay?"

She stretched, her fingertips within inches of him, but she slipped in the snow. She couldn't regain her footing and went down on one knee, planting her free hand in the snow to keep herself from falling in the brook. She felt cold water flowing into her left boot and up her lower leg but bit back a yell lest she panic Rohan. She finally righted herself, losing her glove in the process.

She didn't hesitate. She scooped up the puppy and moved quickly, launching past the tree she was using for balance then sinking against another one. She anchored her feet in the snow to prevent her and Rohan from skidding back into the brook.

She cuddled the furry dog against her. She could feel his little heart racing. "I've got you," she whispered, her own heart thumping madly. "I've got you."

She wanted to sit in the snow and catch her breath, but she knew that wasn't wise. Her shivering was a warning she was in danger of hypothermia. It would be a cold, wet trek back to Vic's house, so she had to get on with it and keep moving.

As she stood straight, she thought she smelled wood smoke—from a fireplace or a woodstove, perhaps. How was that possible? She was too far from the main house. It had to be her imagination or her natural optimism at work.

She heard the snap of a twig and looked up through the trees behind her, away from the brook. A man she didn't recognize stepped comfortably down to her and Rohan. He wore a black suede jacket and solid boots but no hat or gloves.

He scanned her from head to toe before he spoke. "Nice job with the puppy rescue."

"You watched?"

"Yes, ma'am. I didn't want to startle you."

Heather felt Rohan stir in her arms, but he didn't bark. Probably too tired. "Ready to come to my rescue if I fell in, were you?"

"You did fall in," he said, pointing to her wet lower left leg.

"Not all the way in."

"You'd be a popsicle if you fell all the way in. I was on my way to rescue the little guy myself. I'm staying at Vic's guesthouse. I got in late last night. My name's Brody, by the way."

"Heather Sloan," she said. "Good to meet you."

Except she felt as if she should know him. Did know him.

He narrowed his eyes—dark, flecked with gold—on her. He had short-cropped dark hair, a square jaw, a cleft chin. She shook off the idea that he was familiar somehow. She didn't know anyone who would be a guest of Vic Scarlatti.

He stepped past her and picked up her fallen glove out of the snow. She took in his broad shoulders and his dark canvas pants covering muscular thighs. He looked strong and incredibly fit. Another diplomat? Somehow Heather didn't think so.

He stood straight and tucked her glove into her jacket pocket. "It's filled with snow. It's not going to keep you warm. I can take the pup if you'd like. Give you a chance to pull yourself together."

"I'm fine, thanks, and I can handle Rohan."

"Rohan?" Brody stroked the soft fur behind the puppy's ear. "He doesn't look much like a rider of Rohan at the moment, does he?"

Heather agreed the Tolkien-inspired name was in-congruently regal for such a rambunctious, cute-as-the-devil puppy. He was getting heavy in her arms, but she noticed his heart rate had settled down.

"He's not my puppy," she said. "I just helped look for him."

"Vic Scarlatti has a puppy?" Brody grinned as if the prospect both amused and surprised him. "I guess retirement will do that even to a guy like Vic."

"He's a stray. Rohan, I mean. Vic found him wandering around alone out here a few days ago and took him in."

"Well, good for Vic."

"Another guest named him Rohan. Adrienne Portale. Are you two friends?"

"Nope. Don't know her."

Rohan snuggled deeper into Heather's arms. "I should get back. It's cold even for January."

"I'll walk with you."

She sucked in a breath. When it came right down to it, she had no idea who this man was. "Thanks, but I can manage."

"Mind if I walk with you as far as the guesthouse?"

"How do you know Vic?"

"We go back a ways."

A vague answer. "You're a lot younger than he is."

"Yes, I am."

Heather hesitated. "I should let Vic know that Rohan is safe."

"I already texted him that a dark-haired woman in a brown coat had just rescued a puppy from the brook."

"That was efficient."

"He hasn't responded. I also told him you could use some dry clothes." Brody nodded up through the woods toward the main house. "Shall we?"

Heather could feel Rohan settling into her arms. He wasn't a light puppy. She needed to get moving if she was going to carry him all the way back to the house.

She took a step up the hill. "I guess if you're one of Vic's friends, it's safe to go off with you. You're not going to bonk me on the head and dump me in the guesthouse cellar. It doesn't have a cellar, for one thing."

"That's a dramatic imagination you have there."

"It's not drama. It's being practical. I'm very practical."

"Do you say everything you think?"

"No. Do you?"

His gaze slid over her. He smiled. "No." Despite the frigid temperature, she felt heat in her cheeks. Maybe she should think before she spoke. She adjusted Rohan in her arms again as she took another step up the hill. "I'm also good at taking care of myself."

"Come on. You pushed hard through the snow, and you're frozen. Let me take Rohan."

Heather didn't protest when Brody scooped up the half-asleep puppy. She tried not to shiver or let her teeth chatter, but with the cold weather and her partial dip in the icy brook, she had to admit she was frozen. "I didn't expect Rohan to end up down here by the lake."

"He bolted past the guesthouse. I saw him out the window but couldn't get out fast enough to grab him before he hit the brook. You're okay to walk, aren't you?"

"Yep. No problem."

"Didn't think it would be. Tough as nails, right?"

"Just used to New England winters."

"Sure thing."

There was something in his tone Heather couldn't quite place. Familiarity? Sarcasm? Amusement? A mix of all three? She couldn't deny she was madly curious about him, but maybe he just had funny ideas about Knights Bridge and the people who lived there.

She resisted asking him the four thousand questions she had. She needed to get Rohan back to Vic's. With her wet pants and case of the shivers, she ought to get dry and warm herself She was happy to let Brody lead the way back to Vic's house, thus allowing her to step in his footprints instead of in virgin snow. It was much less tiring, and the snow didn't seem to faze him.

"How do you like Knights Bridge so far?"

He glanced back at her. "Do you really want to ask me that right now?"

"Seventeen degrees, snow, ice, a golden retriever puppy on the loose?" Heather grinned at him. "What's not to like?"

"Oh, yeah, Heather Sloan." Just the faintest of smiles. "What's not to like?"

Vic Scarlatti bought his house on Echo Lake twenty years ago, when he was a rising star in the US diplomatic corps, and had done virtually nothing to it since. That suited Heather. The previous owner, the granddaughter of the Boston financier who'd built the house, had updated the plumbing, wiring and heat about ten years before the property went on the market upon her death. It was classic Arts and Crafts, oriented to take in the best views of its long-neglected garden and the lake.

Brody showed no sign of appreciating the house's charms and potential as he set Rohan on his puppy bed in the small, cluttered mudroom off the kitchen. The little golden retriever immediately gave a deep sigh and rolled onto his side, dozing.

"The bed looks new," Brody said.

"It is," Heather said, walking past him through the open doorway into the kitchen. "I bought it at the country store in town. I figured Rohan needed a bed."

"Does Vic plan to keep him?"

"He says absolutely not."

She sank onto a chair at the kitchen table. She was stiffer than she wanted to admit after her adventure, but at least she was warming up fast. She pulled off her ankle boots. Both socks were wet, but her left one was sopping. Another of her out-into-the-cold sins was her choice of thin cotton socks. She peeled them off and stuffed them in her boots. She'd figure out what to do about them later, when she didn't have Brody for an audience.

He grabbed Rohan's water bowl and filled it at the deep porcelain kitchen sink, one of the granddaughter's additions. He brought the bowl to Rohan and set it close to his bed. The puppy stirred. At first he was too lethargic to care about anything except yawning, but he managed to get onto all fours and lap at the water.

"You should have some water, too," Brody said as he rejoined Heather in the kitchen. "It's easy to get dehydrated in this dry cold and not realize it."

"Water would be nice."

Before she could stand, he had a cupboard open and a glass in hand. He filled it with water and set it on the table in front of her. "Drink up."

"You remind me of my brothers. They never look cold, either. You don't even have a red nose. I do, don't I?"

"You were out in the cold longer than I was."

"A diplomatic answer. My brothers won't go easy on me for almost freezing to death while chasing a puppy."

"What would they have had you do?"

"Not take chances. Wear wool socks, at least." She smiled suddenly. "But all's well that ends well, right?"

"And you don't have to tell your brothers."

"True, but it's too good a story not to tell. I wish I'd spotted your footprints instead of Rohan's, though. I'd have let you do the rescuing."

Brody unbuttoned his jacket but didn't take it off. He had on a dark sweater over his taut abdomen. Heather was accustomed to fit guys, and he was obviously and decidedly fit. She averted her gaze and drank her water. She was noticing too much about this man. Maybe dehydration and adrenaline had put her senses on overdrive.

"Do you have dry clothes here?" he asked.

"Why would I?" She snapped up straight, almost knocking her water glass off the table. "Wait. You don't think—" She gulped in a breath. "I'm almost forty years younger than Vic. No. Absolutely not."

Brody grinned, his dark eyes sparking with humor. "That's not what I was thinking. I was just wondering if you kept a change of clothes here given your work. You and Vic Scarlatti? Damn, that's funny. Seriously funny."

"What do you mean, seriously funny? You say that as if I'm not. " She stopped herself, abandoning that train of thought in the nick of time. "Never mind."

"As if you're not attractive, you mean? That's not what I'm saying." He paused, warmth replacing the humor in his eyes now. "Trust me."

Heather jumped to her feet, baffled by why she was blurting out things she had no business blurting out. She'd never been good at policing what she said, but she didn't know this man—never mind that he seemed familiar. A trick of her imagination, no doubt.

"Right. Well." She took a quick breath. "Main point is, I'll be fine in these clothes. Obviously, I didn't show up here dressed for a puppy rescue. I'm from Knights Bridge— I live in the village a few miles from here."

"Have you always lived in town?"

"Except for college, but I went to UMass Amherst.

That's not far."

"No wanderlust?"

Ope's Opinion of Echo Lake
By Margie
This is a quick, easy romantic read with a little mystery in it. This is the fourth book in the Swift River Valley series. It is the first one I read. I did not feel lost. The author did a good job of introducing each character and letting you know how they are related to others. I did feel like I might want to go back and read the other characters stories.

The first half of the book felt very repetitive. I think I was told several times that Brody had a pumpkin incident with the Sloan brothers. I never did hear that whole story.

The second half of the book was great! I loved how strong and independent Heather Sloan was. I liked that she fell in love, but continued with her life and her dreams. She didn't get swallowed up by Brody.

The story was predictable, but had a lot of fun along the way. There was an adorable pup, a lot of Sloan brothers and Brody's friends that all add a lot of enjoyable characters to Brody and Heathers story.

I would read Carla Neggers again.

A Fun Love Story
By Marsha @ Keeper Bookshelf
It’s hard not to fall in love with Rohan right at the first page. Really. Who can resist a frisky Golden Retriever puppy leading humans on a merry chase through the snow?

*I received an e-ARC of Echo Lake from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange
for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*

Read on for my thoughts on Echo Lake. No true spoilers, promise.

We meet the most adorable character in this novel at the very first page. Rohan, an abandoned Golden Retriever puppy has escaped from his rescuer’s home and taken off for a romp through the snow.

The major characters are introduced rather quickly through the search for the happy, cuddly, mischievous Rohan. Vic Scarlatti, Adrienne Portale, Heather Sloan are searching in various places for the escaped puppy. Somehow, Heather has gotten the outdoor search area. Following puppy tracks in the snow, Rohan is leading her where she hopes he did not end up… the water. Sighting the pup caught in the icy water causes Heather’s heart to sink as she quickly, but cautiously slides down the snowy bank to reach Rohan. Gathering her dwindling strength she grabs the pup from the water and turns to slowly make her way back up the bank – hopefully without them both falling back into the frigid water. Seeing a shadow above her, she looks up into the eyes of Brody Hancock.

Brody had left Knights Ridge years ago, back when a very young Heather had a serious crush on the bad boy. He is back in town temporarily to help his friend, Vic Scarlatti, a retired diplomat who took up residence here a short time ago. He has owned the home for a few years, but while he was traveling around the world’s hot spots Adrienne did house-sitting duty for him. The daughter of a friend and former lover, Adrienne is a wine expert who can do her work pretty much anywhere – so the house-sitting job fits right into her lifestyle.

Since Vic retired he has been noticing small things happening around his home. Nothing major, nothing that has him worried for his safety but enough to ask Brody, a DSS agent to come to town for a visit and do some investigating. While in town, Brody not only has to worry about Vic, but running into the Sloan brothers again – Heather’s 5 brothers – who don’t exactly see him in a good light. Which makes falling for the grown up Heather a bit, shall we say, interesting.

Echo Lake is at heart, a love story – Heather and Brody’s love story. With a small mystery to solve along with falling in love.

Since Swift River Valley is an ongoing series about an entire community, I worried a bit about keeping characters straight since I have not read all of the books in the series. I didn’t have to be concerned. Characters from the past novels were introduced naturally throughout the story, with a sentence or two about how they got together and where they are today. So it was a nice backstory and update rolled up in a very brief, but flowing into the storyline result.

I enjoyed Echo Lake and would recommend it. It is a love story, a charming love story and who doesn’t need that in today’s world. A side mystery that really isn’t that serious, but does add to the tensions of the story – but this is Brody and Heather’s happily ever after. So enjoy. Oh, and fall into puppy love with Rohan ‘cos he is adorable.

Echo Lake - Resonance Of Love
By Alima Livzletlivz
For the very longest time, I’ve wanted to read Carla Neggers and finally, finally was able to do so, with “Echo Lake”, the fourth in the Swift River Valley Series. The waiting was worth it, the first read was pure delight and Agent Hancock and the resident builder Heather Sloan are just perfect for each other, with a life with each other.

DSS Agent Brody Hancock returns to Knights Ridge at the behest of his diplomat friend Vic Scarletti. Eighteen long years has changed a lot in Knights Bridge, yet nothing has changed. The essence of a small town has not changed, but Heather Loan sure had grown up into a lady giving him sleepless nights. There are a few things in his life at Knights Bridge that need to be put to rest, before he can succumb to his love for Heather.

Heather Sloan is the only girl and youngest of the Sloan clan, and helps with their construction business. So renovating the stately 1912 country home of Vic Scarletti is a great opportunity for her family business, and for her as she heads the project. But she did not budget in the fact that Brody Hancock could skyrocket her heart to a different proposal.

Set against the New England winter, Echo Lake is a charming story of love, patience and family. It is a beautiful story of two wonderful people meant to be together. And it is a captivating story steeped in emotions, love, subtle humor and unconditional support of family and friends.

Received an ARC from Harlequin via NetGalley for an honest review.
