Tracie Peterson Can (and Should) Do Better

Wow! This book was a HUGE disappointment. There were so many issues with it I don't even know where to begin!

Let's start with the book summary. The summary implies that Lenore should be the main character and that the book should focus on her love interest with Kolbein. But poor Lenore was barely in the book. Her character is flat and boring, mainly because the author doesn't give her any attention. Meanwhile the book focuses on Abrianna, Lenore's best friend, who isn't even mentioned in the summary. While Abrianna had a kind, compassionate spirit, I found her to be unbelievably and annoyingly naive, innocent, flighty, incompetent, and lacking in common sense. Her constant ramblings and mistakes quickly became irritating.

The supporting characters are also either irritating, bland, or unlikable. There was not a single character that I felt any sort of connection to.

Besides the poor characters, the plot and sub plots were mediocre at best. Quite frankly, I don't even know what the main plot was supposed to be. There was so much going on. In the blink of an eye, a plot would be introduced, and before it could be resolved, it just Poof! disappeared.

Scenes also changed suddenly and drastically, with brand new characters suddenly appearing. The author provided no clues as to how much time had passed between the current scene and the previous one. It could have been mere minutes, or it could have been weeks.

The historical details in this store were also very confusing. For instance, the author repeatedly referred to a conflict having to do with the Chinese. But the author never explained the conflict. I have no idea what the conflict was or why Abrianna was so passionate about helping the Chinese. Perhaps if Ms. Peterson had devoted four or five sentences to explaining the conflict, I might have felt more of a connection to Abrianna's character. But unfortunately she didn't bother and I was once again left scratching my head.

The entire book felt more like a first draft, rather than a completed novel that the author and editors and publishers had toiled over until it reached perfection. What happened? Did Tracie Peterson just give them her first draft and the publisher say, "Great, thanks, we'll slap a cover on it and charge $19.99 each for a hardcover. I'll see you a month from now with your next book in hand!" Is this how this book got published? Because that's the vibe I got. The author didn't seem to have a passion for this story, and it felt like she just finished it as quickly as she could in order to just move on to her next project.

Overall this book was a major letdown. Even for a new author or an independent author this book would have been bad, but the fact that Tracie Peterson, considered a leader in historical fiction, wrote this book makes it extra bad. I expect more from an author of her caliber. MUCH more. After all, she flaunts that she has written over a hundred novels. And to her credit, I have enjoyed many of them. But her more recent novels have been disappointing. It's almost as if she's trying to pump out as many novels as quickly as she can, without any concern for their quality, and is assuming that people will pay for these new novels based on her reputation and history of enjoyable stories. Well, this is NOT a novel worth wasting your hard earned money on. It's not even worth wasting the time to read it. Hopefully her future books will be better.

Just not a book I would recommend.

Tracie Peterson is one of my favorite authors. I have read many of her books and typically really enjoy her work. That being said, her latest release, "Steadfast Heart", just didn't do it for me. The book is advertised as a story about Lenore Fulcher, a young woman from Seattle who seeks true love instead of an arranged marriage, and Kolbein Booth, a lawyer from Chicago who travels to Seattle in search of his sister. He traces her to the Madison Bridal School only to discover that she is not there. Other central characters are Abrianna Cunningham, the ward of Mrs. Madison, and her lifelong friend, Wade Ackerman.

The book really fell flat for me. The characters lacked depth and the plot didn't really feel flushed out. I found the romance between Lenore and Kolbein to be completely implausible. They had only just met; he found her to be beautiful and she thought him handsome; then she leaves for San Francisco. Upon her return they are suddenly madly in love--but based on what? Having so many central characters made it difficult to relate to a particular character and didn't allow for great development of them.

I definitely prefer her earlier works. I find that those books are Peterson at her best. This book was lacking in so many areas that I just can't recommend it. If you are new to Tracie Peterson, skip this one and try her earlier novels.

A very silly story.

I usually like books by Tracie Peterson. I was looking forward to reading this. I was disappointed in this book. It is not one of her best. If I hadn't read her other books I would not be inclined to read any more based on this one. I found it to be just plain silly and a waste of my time.

Terry Bolryder writes a sexy hot love story!!!

Three strong sexy alpha half brothers and one beautiful but insecure alpha female, they all grew up together, everyone always thought Ainsley and Rafe would become mates when they grew up, including Rafe. He was always there for her and everyone else in the pack, always talking about his responsibility to the pack. While it was possible that any of the 3 brothers were all Alpha's and the first one who mates will become alpha of the pack ,the brothers were very close and close to Ainsley. When they go to college the four of them get a house together. Ainsley falls more in love with Rafe but she doesn't want to mate with him because it is expected out of them and because he wants to do what's best for the pack, she wants him to love her and truly wants to mate with her. So she runs off with a roque wolf to see the world and find herself. She is gone for 2 years, but now she's back. She moves back in with the 3 brothers and now she must choose who she will mate with and make the alpha of the pack! Great series , with action, and hot sexy wolves! I couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting.

So, I enjoyed the set as a whole. I only had a few issues with Aspen. She is completely oblivious to things going on around her. I know she is smart but its like she has no common sense. She's definitely self-centered and bratty at times. Stomping off and throwing a huff about pretty much anything. Rafe...I had issues with him because he was kind of an ass through most of it til the end. He might be an alpha wolf but seriously....common sense should tell him he needs to admit feelings. She was hinting around at it and he still didn't get it. Also, he's got a laptop and has internet access AND he invests money and is really smart but he doesn't know what a freaking bra is? Band aid? Really? LOL. They aren't THAT primitive. Geez. Also, I noticed some editing issues.

Born and brought up in Wales, Jennie Jones loved anything with a romantic element from an early age. At eighteen, she went to drama school in London then spent a number of years performing in British theatres, becoming someone else two hours, eight performances a week. Jennie wrote her first romance story at the age of twenty five whilst 'resting' (a theatrical term for 'out of work'). She wrote a western! But nobody wanted it. Before she got discouraged a musical theatre job came up and Jennie put writing to one side. She now lives in Western Australia, a five minute walk to the beach that she loves to look at but hardly ever goes to - too much sand. Jennie returned to writing four years ago. She says writing keeps her artistic nature dancing and her imagination bubbling. Like acting, she can't envisage a day when it will ever get boring.

Stunning Chemistry and Drama Aplenty!

The three books released in The Swallow’s Fall series have been monumental reads and all with their fair share of drama, laughter and tears for us avid readers. The House At The Bottom Of The Hill brings out the chuckling and waterworks with antics, both from the new and familiar characters. Daniel and Charlotte are stunning from the start and click with so much chemistry that have readers completely elated, right down to their character nicknames – Hotshot and Red, or rather the connotations that go with it! Charming, Warm, Mysterious and Romantic

Jennie Jones invites you back to the drama and small town antics of Swallows Fall where the residents stick together, a slow-burn between the newcomer and a handsome resident will become a blazing fire, a mystery is about to be solved while a years old secret will unfold.

Charlotte Simmons has arrived in Swallows Fall all the way from the UK after the death of her grandmother and the sale of her beloved bed and breakfast business. Having been brought up by her gran after her mother’s mysterious death years before, she continues to be haunted by unanswered questions surrounding her mother’s murder and feels the only way she can get the truth about the man who murdered her mother is from Ethan Granger (House on Burra Burra Lane), his son.

Under the pretext of buying the local B & B (the house at the bottom of the hill) and renovating it so that she can begin trading as a going concern, she doesn’t realise that the residents have a certain pride for their town and are vehemently opposed to change so, when she makes plans to change the exterior colour of the cottage, she doesn’t count on the radical opposition she’s about to come up against. Thankfully she’s not planning on staying too long … all she needs to do is get Ethan on his own and ask him a few questions.

Her plans are somewhat thwarted though when she makes an unexpected friend in the form of Daniel Bradford, the owner of the local pub. Without meaning to, she soon finds herself being drawn in by his easy-going manner, his willingness to help her and his darned sexy butt! And then, there’s her dog Lucy! But, Daniel has his own secrets too!

This is the second book in the series (sorry Jennie, haven’t quite got to the Christmas novella, 12 Days at Silver Bells House yet) and again I have been enchanted by this little town of Swallows Fall (whose population has now increased to 97), wanting to visit so that I can see all the quaint old buildings, visit the pub, rock in a chair next to Grandy and listen to his reminiscences of times gone by, all the while learning everybody’s secrets.

Jennie’s writing is warm, inviting and extremely entertaining with her great wit and humour pervading the story in the interactions between both her main protagonists as well as her stellar but quirky cast of secondary characters such as Lucy (Charlotte’s four-legged friend), Mrs Tam, Mrs J, Ted, the twins, Ruby the pig and, of course, dear old Grandy, the town’s intuitive patriarch. Her incorporation of a number of the characters we grew to love in The House on Burra Burra Lane (my review here) also gives this novel a sense of continuity whilst providing some closure on a previous hot topic.

The question of the colour of the house at the bottom of the hill, in addition to Charlotte’s agenda for being in Swallows Fall and the unwanted sparks that begin to fly between her and Daniel, provides the motivation for most of the conflict in the story and, as a rural romance, this works well in keeping the momentum of the book going.

Jennie truly does capture the heart of a small Aussie town from the close-knit community to the pride of its residents, right down to the gossip-mongering and, like Burra Burra, there’s a bit of mystery at its heart and sadness as its core.

Charming, warm, mysterious and romantic, all you romance buffs out there need to come home to Swallows Fall!

It’s not a category I typically read (since the atrocity that was Pirates of the Caribbean 3 destroyed any love I had for Pirate

Charity Goswick is desperate to get away from a dastardly uncle and the cruel Naval captain Charity’s uncle has chosen as her bridegroom. Recovering from a wedding ceremony she barely remembers due to her drug-induced haze and hiding from the men on the docks looking for a quick tumble under her skirts, Charity stows aboard a ship. There, she falls asleep and is awakened by James. James Lamont is a Captain in his own right, but is looking for his brother who was abducted by pirates some months ago. His investigation has led him to Captain Payne’s pirate ship where he finds a quartermaster named The Judge who claims to know where his brother is hiding.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a Pirate romance, longer than I can remember really. It’s not a category I typically read (since the atrocity that was Pirates of the Caribbean 3 destroyed any love I had for Pirate literature), but this was an enjoyable re-introduction. James is noble and quick-thinking, as befitting a sea Captain. Charity is spirited, strong-willed, and creative when it comes to evading trouble. Both had difficult childhoods, but have grown stronger because of those hardships. James teaches Charity that not all men are awful and out to abuse her in some fashion. And in Charity, James finds a woman he can’t live without, a strong woman capable of handling rough life on the seas. Love develops slowly between this couple, but even their kisses are packed with emotion and sizzling sensuality.

I will warn readers of two potential triggers: 1) there is a very short couple of paragraphs describing the attempted rape of Charity and 2) towards the end, Charity is quite savagely beaten in the streets. Both are blessedly short, but I do wish to warn anyone who may be triggered and/or disturbed by such scenes.

Action-packed with well-developed romance between the main couple and some funny, snarky one-liners thrown in for good measure. A tad rushed towards the end and leaves open-ended the plotline regarding James’ brother , but certainly enjoyable nonetheless. Definitely pick this one up if you enjoy Pirate romances.

Unlikeable H/h, scattered storyline

This one was a miss for me from the very beginning, largely due to neither of the main characters being very likeable.

Charity is understandably distraught about her situation, but her persona is extremely abrasive. Seemingly quite spoiled and churlish, she is more snippy than frightened. For someone who aggressively professes to know that men only want one thing from a women, she continuously makes bad decisions which gives the impression that she is merely petulant and not very smart.

James is much more well rounded in his thoughts, but in practice he is much too smooth and suave. What I imagine is supposed to be playfully flirtatious banter actually comes across as quite lecherous, smarmy, and carelessly flippant.

The plot is all over the place, and never seems to come together. Additionally, I felt that despite Charity’s seeming need to put herself in danger, she had entirely too many unrealistic close calls. Please do not misunderstand, I am not saying I am surprised that she was in peril, I am saying there are only so many times that it can be believable for her to be saved at the last second. And as for moving the story forward, repeatedly placing your heroine in position to almost be raped just isn’t the best way to build suspense.

Easy Reading

There is something to be said for a quick and easy read, Tamara Hughes does just that with Tempting the Pirate. Decent story that leads the way to more in a series, typical pirate romance with a happy ending. While this novel did not stand out among the genre it was enjoyable. Good read if you are looking for a "quickie."

Her lips formed his name, but no sound came out.

Blood Red: The Complete First Season by Vivian Wolkoff is a 440 page series. It includes eight episodes, several chapters for each, no chapter titles just numbers. The episodes are short, I was immediately hooked. I kept going back to my kindle for days just to finish the book. I loved the cover picture and font, it conveyed the series perfectly.
If you like stories with elves, vampires, witches and the like, you will love this supernatural tale. It did not disappoint. It was right up my alley. The plot is layered and unfolds nicely as the book progresses. The writing was great and I really enjoyed all the characters, especially Evie. Her character growth was fun to read. Terrific book.

Great read and lots of fun

This series interested me from the start. I particularly like supernatural stories (or preternatural in this case) in general and Blood Red broke away from many of the staples of the genre, which made for a nice change. The approach of breaking the story up into episodes is an interesting one, but it works well. However, if you’re like me you will probably end up reading the different episodes pretty close together anyway.

I loved the characters in Blood Red, particularly the girls. There is some really strong characterization work and both the interactions between characters and the decisions that the characters make are logical and engaging. I also liked the way the author shows the world that her characters live in where other authors often spend paragraphs explaining things in detail. Overall, this was a fun read and I look forward to reading more.

For those who enjoy supernatural books with a touch of romance, like me, cannot miss the opportunity to read the complete first season. Blood Red distinguishes itself from the rest of the category because is not afraid to leave the cliche and adds a lot of erotic elements to the story.

The books from this author are already known to break the idea of the same hero and heroine and the present is not different. There are no 100% nice guys and girls anymore, there are no girls who pretend they do not like sex, and these modifications only makes blood Red more interesting.

Really worth it to check it out.

What an entertaining read!

Out of all of Miss Drake's books, this one has to be my favorite! I love this book so much, I'm not even sure how many times I've reread it in the past years, and I couldn't put it down the first time I read it. In a way, the story IS kind of typical. You've got the strong arrogant knight and the stubborn rebellious maiden who are forced to get married over duty. I found the book to be really fast paced. As with all of Shannon Drake's books, there's a lot of battle scenes involved so if u like a lot of that "brave and handsome knights in battle" stuff, this one's the one for you.
I really liked the heroine even though I hear a lot of complaints about how immature, bratty, and childish she was. I can actually understand how she must have felt living in an age where woman were considered weak and were powerless. She had such an exceptionally strong will to be free to rule her father's lands that it made her seem bratty. The key to the book is that she didn't hate her husband for who he was, but absolutely dispised the idea that she had been COMMANDED to marry him. Throw this heroine in with a mature but arrogant and fiery hero and you've got a really fun and entertaining read. I love their first encounter when the heroine tries to escape her fate of marriage by fleeing the King's castle.
I've read so many books where the two main characters are clawing each other in the throat one minute and then sleeping with each other in the next, totally forgetting the fact that they're suppose to be hating each other. I can say that this one's definitely different. You see a slow but gradual change in how the two characters feel toward each other...no jumping around. I felt that their personalities were more true and it made them seem more realistic. I hate the fact that by the end of most books, the characters who u fall in love with at the beginning of the book have totally changed...almost to the point where u feel as if they've become totally new characters. Shannon Drake did a good job of graduallly shaping her two main characters. At the end of the book, they're still the same two from the beginning even though it's obvious they've changed their ways and have fallen in love.
I would definitely recommand this book to anyone

Historical Scottland and Romance

One of the few unabridged offerings in the historical romance category, and a good choice from Brilliance. First off if you don't like romance stories this one is not for you. But, if you like Scottish/English romances this one is for you. You will follow the story of one of the King's champions (King David of Scotland that is) as he is finally "given his prize" for being a champion all these years. He is to get the Castle of Blue Isle and along with it the Heiress. But the heiress has other ideas and thinks that she can govern the lands herself, as she is the daughter of a Viking. She commences to run away which allows for an interesting first meeting of the warrior and the heiress.
There is a lot of intrigues, vengeance as well as history in this story. The author takes the time to talk a lot about the difference in what is happening in Scotland as well as England at the time. She also goes into the history of the isle and how things have changed over the years. I liked the story though at times it seemed a bit long.

Romance with a history lesson...

This is my first Shannon Drake book, so I didn't quite know what to expect. This book differs from other historical romances I've read, in that it reads like a "story" that happens to have romance as one of the primary focal points. It's not the typical historical romance where the focus is on the beauty of the "fair maiden," the prowess of the male character, and their sparring matches before they realize they're meant to be together. Sure there's some of that here too, but there's a story as well. This is evidenced by the length of time it takes before the two characters even kiss. I guess this is more of a "mature" historical romance. However, it was enjoyable enough that I'll try another of her books. While I still prefer the "typical" historical romance, the bottom line is, would I recommend it? The answer is yes, as long as you don't expect a novel similar to some of Kathleen Woodiwiss' best (and older) novels.

I love how Amber delivers her characters to us and makes ...

Outstanding story. I love how Amber delivers her characters to us and makes her readers apart of the world the book brings to life. This book is better read in the series as you get background on the characters within the book. Mikel and Inno needs to communicate with each other and not let the heads rule their hearts. I enjoyed this episode with the Moon pack cannot wait for more.

Supernatural powers mixed with human faults produce suspense

Obviously not a stand-alone book, because otherwise the reader misses out on too many things. I should not have started with number 13 in a series, because I am not able to appreciate well enough the author's writing ability.

In this world there are shifters, gods, mutants, vampires and other supernatural creatures.
The main characters in this story is the wolf shifter Inno and his mate, the vampire Mikel. They have not completed their mating, because of Inno reluctance to bite the man he loves. His excuse might be that he is not quite familiar with the way of wolves.
Mikel does not understand why Inno does not take the last step. He fears that Inno might change his mind.
And the men evade the necessary conversation. Almost too long.

The solution to this specific story is mostly entirely happy, with the unexpected arrival of twins for Inno and Mikel to love and cherish.

But there are dark clouds on the horizon. Someone has taken Anthony's grandfather prisoner, his son offers warnings to several persons and some foggy person threatens everything Anthony hold dear.

I love this series

I love reading this series the book seem to get better and better. Mikel is feeling upset because although he knows that Inno is his mate Inno has yet to claim him. Inno is still dealing with his sister Claudia having him kidnapped he doesn't trust her and also the fact that his mate wants to kill her it not making his life any easier. Inno also knows that it is something bothering his mate. These two have some serious lack of communication going on. Anthony who is one of my favorite character's is dealing with someone stalking him in his dreams one of his grandfather's offspings who is threading his family. As Mikel and Inno grow somewhat distant Inno gets a call from his sister asking to meet him she tells him that she is pregnant by a mutant that kidnapped him it goes from bad to worse she wants Inno to ask Anthony to turn him back. Inno tells Anthony what's going on Anthony's son Trin tells Inno to avoid the bad wolf. I love reading about the Moon Pack and their colorful cast of character's. This book was well written like the other's in this series and I can't wait to get my hands on the next book.

Josh and Bradley have been friends since they were kids but Josh has been in love with Bradley for a while but he thinks that Bradley is straight: he sees Bradley chatting with girls and he thinks that his BFF is flirting with them.
One night, Josh goes to a party and drinks too much.. Josh thinks his dad has cancer and doesn’t know what to do…he doesn’t even want to ask about it to his mother. Plus, he wants Bradley and he feels heartbroken.
When Bradley and Josh kiss each other at the party, Bradley runs away and Josh is devastated. But, the next day, they talk and kiss: they love each other and nothing seems to go wrong.
Unfortunately, Joshua was right about his dad and when he dies, Josh doesn’t know to do and he can’t even cry for him. He’s not alone though and he can count on Bradley’s love and support.
But there is something that has been bothering Bradley for a while, now: he has to improve his school grades to go to College with Josh but even with Josh taking a year off from College, who says that everything is going to be like they dreamed about? Is their love going to be enough?
I loved the writing style and I could feel every emotion through the author’s words.
Can’t wait to read the sequel.

i found this book the other day and i decided i would give it a read and once i started i couldn't put it down i read the whole thing right then and it was very good, all i wanted was more to read, i needed to know what happened next. I believe this author is going to be writing some very good books and i can't wait to read everyone. After reading this one i checked out the amazon page and noticed that there was a number two to this book and just needed to read that one too, so i bought it and am reading it now, so far it is just as good as the first one and i can't wait to finish it and see what happens next. I highly recommend this book it is one of the best books i read in a long time.

An author to watch!

I don't normally read works this short, but this was the top result on Amazon when I searched for YA LGBT, and it was free, so I figured why not give it a chance. Things moved a little fast, which was expected for a short story, but the emotion and connection between characters were well-captured. If Danni Keane's aim was to leave her readers wanting more with these characters, she accomplished her goal! I'm definitely excited to see where Josh & Bradley go from here and how Josh's life plays out after the death of his father and the emotional aftermath. Definitely an author I'm going to keep an eye on! :)

Hilarious historical fiction

It's a good thing I read this book at home and not out in public, because I am quite certain that I spent much of the time smiling and laughing my way through the pages, and therefore likely looked as if I'd taken leave of my senses! However, I simply couldn't help myself, as Charlotte Withersby is truly one of the most entertaining characters to come along in some time. Her lack of social awareness and her naive perspective on life had me in stitches - not to mention the witty dialogue that took place between Charlotte and her father's new assistant Edward Trimble. As you read through the pages, you will definitely see glimpses of yourself as she stumbles from one social faux pas to another! And Siri Mitchell's descriptions of people are hysterical, such as when Charlotte's uncle (in a complementary manner) describes Charlotte as "Sturdy. Sound. Snugly put together". Now, if that isn't every girl's dream description, I don't know what is! (I tried this compliment out on my wife and for some reason it didn't go well). And the most amazing part is that you will walk away from this book not only with a good dose of happy endorphins, but also thinking about the importance of being true to ourselves. We need to live for God and for what he wants for our lives, not with a focus on pleasing someone else, no matter how important to us that they are. Only then can we find contentment in the unique and wonderful person God made each of us to be!

"Like a Flower in Bloom" is a winner in every way, with an engaging plot, delightful characters, and a romance that is unlike any I've ever read before. Fans of historical fiction are going to gobble this one up and beg for more. Well done, Siri Mitchell!

Wonderful!

What a wonderful story! I have read a few of Siri's books and this one is by far my favorite. She really did a great job with character development and mixing history with a fun story. I enjoy reading about botany and this book was full of all kinds of information on plants. So for the historical aspect this was a great book. I LOVE the characters, Edward and Charlotte are hilarious and realistic. I really wanted to jump into this story and tag along with Charlotte. There is a lot of humor that I haven't noticed in Siri's previous books so that part was refreshing.

While the story line is a bit predictable there are some twists and I really loved reading this book.

I highly recommend for a great historical read!

Loved it!

To be honest a book about botanist, well I just wasn't sure... But I am a big Siri Mitchell fan, so I had to get it. And am I ever so glad I did! I loved this novel. From the beginning I was captured by the characters and the story. Charlotte, was absolutely delightful! Her complete honesty, unknown trespasses against society codes/standards, all made for a highly entertaining read. While I was not laughing out loud, I found this to be a quiet humorous story. In truth, I felt as if I could picture all of it happening and had an almost movie like reel going through my mind.

All the characters were wonderful and add so much to the novel. And surprised, yes, delightfully so was I by Mitchell's way of writing about botany and this time in history where it is fascinating and fun! Very hard to put this one down and completely enjoyable reading all the while! Bravo, Mitchell!
