Engaging, natural and balanced young love story

I love how these books are described as "Taboo" because of the stepsibling concept, but I have to say it's nothing of the sort. Being stepsiblings for a short amount of time when you're a 21 and already have an attraction to one another prior doesn't make this taboo in any way shape or form. Convenient perhaps, but not taboo. Especially since the young adult relationship seems more mature than their parent's, but I digress. I didn't read Stepbrother Dearest, which seems pretty popular, because too many reviewers describe the girl as a doormat and I can't stomach doormats who patiently get their man after a book's worth of unbalanced mental abuse, so I gave this story a try instead. I can say that our girl here is not a doormat and I found myself pleasantly engaged for a couple of hours in a story that had two protagonists worthy of love with some very steamy exploratory sex scenes.
Brynn and Nate both go to UVA and although Nate has never noticed Brynn, Brynn has had a crush on him since her freshmen year of college, that is until one night at a party, a very drunk Nate invites Brynn to a threesome with him and another woman. When Brynn's mother meets and marries Pierce Thornton, former congressman and wealthy entrepreneur, Brynn has some reservations about the relationship but wants to see her mother happy. Much to her chagrin, she finds herself now a step-sister to Nate, and although her mind tells her he's trouble, she can't help but fall under his charming spell.
I was prepared for Nate to be jerk and he is for a while, but Brynn shows more backbone as the story progresses and the story falls into a natural progression of a relationship that is more than just sex. The family dynamics and drama are always lingering until it comes to a head towards the end and kept me engaged from start to finish. This is a very quick, light read that was also sexy and most importantly, balanced.

Holy, hot, stepbrothers...

First off, I would just like to say that being in a relationship with your STEP sibling is NOT incest! There is NO blood relation! I'm not sure why people think this is so taboo lol Ummm hello-- Clueless!
Okay, now that I have that off my chest I would like to take about how I did totally enjoy this book more than the first one. I like how there was no time lapse therefore we were able to see the pair progress as a couple together instead of apart. This book had a ton more frustrating moments and I would get urked every time someone acted like she was sleeping with her twin when she would mention Nate in a romantic way. The author did a fantastic job of slowly unfolding the plot with the step-father. It was a slow burn that we got a little bit more glimpses of and then BAM! Sucker punch to the face and I was like OH MY GOD! Then everything blew up and it was done in such perfect pacing.
The characters were a bit more fleshed out in the book. I always relate to the nerdy, home body types because I'm like that. And then the nerdy girls gets the hot guy it works even better for me. Brynn was kind-hearted, smart, and willing to give everyone a chance. She doesn't spend her time slut-shamming at all in the book and I loved that about her. There were so many moments where this could've fallen into the new adult trap but it was very unique and I enjoyed it. Nate for me had a lot of redeeming to do once we saw a glimpse of the real him. I am happy to report that he became the man we all wanted him to be. Alpha, sweet, possessive, and redeemable.
I can't wait for more Stepbrother books from Colleen!

Love, lies and bad parenting...with a realistic resolution

I have already read several of this author's biker books...Dante's Nine and the Depraved Club series...so I was curious to see what she would do with the topic of a family drama involving a romance between step siblings. It was surprisingly pretty good, considering there are so many books of this type out right now, and I was pleased with the storyline. It was not all just taboo, erotica between a girl and her step-brother (they knew each other before their parents got married) but more a steamy, sad and emotional little drama about a son who can do no good in the eyes of his over-bearing father, a daughter who feels neglected and forced to take on the role of caretaker to her own mother and a web of lies and deceit that have kept a mother and son apart for many years.
There are friends who play roles in the lives of these two star-crossed lovers and they provide some added fluff to the story, and while some of the actions were predictable and completely expected, I still enjoyed this quick and engrossing read nonetheless.
A sweet and at times, upsetting but hopeful romance with some very steamy coming-of-age sexual exploration and a believable HEA ending.
