It’s not a category I typically read (since the atrocity that was Pirates of the Caribbean 3 destroyed any love I had for Pirate

Charity Goswick is desperate to get away from a dastardly uncle and the cruel Naval captain Charity’s uncle has chosen as her bridegroom. Recovering from a wedding ceremony she barely remembers due to her drug-induced haze and hiding from the men on the docks looking for a quick tumble under her skirts, Charity stows aboard a ship. There, she falls asleep and is awakened by James. James Lamont is a Captain in his own right, but is looking for his brother who was abducted by pirates some months ago. His investigation has led him to Captain Payne’s pirate ship where he finds a quartermaster named The Judge who claims to know where his brother is hiding.
It’s been a long time since I’ve read a Pirate romance, longer than I can remember really. It’s not a category I typically read (since the atrocity that was Pirates of the Caribbean 3 destroyed any love I had for Pirate literature), but this was an enjoyable re-introduction. James is noble and quick-thinking, as befitting a sea Captain. Charity is spirited, strong-willed, and creative when it comes to evading trouble. Both had difficult childhoods, but have grown stronger because of those hardships. James teaches Charity that not all men are awful and out to abuse her in some fashion. And in Charity, James finds a woman he can’t live without, a strong woman capable of handling rough life on the seas. Love develops slowly between this couple, but even their kisses are packed with emotion and sizzling sensuality.
I will warn readers of two potential triggers: 1) there is a very short couple of paragraphs describing the attempted rape of Charity and 2) towards the end, Charity is quite savagely beaten in the streets. Both are blessedly short, but I do wish to warn anyone who may be triggered and/or disturbed by such scenes.
Action-packed with well-developed romance between the main couple and some funny, snarky one-liners thrown in for good measure. A tad rushed towards the end and leaves open-ended the plotline regarding James’ brother , but certainly enjoyable nonetheless. Definitely pick this one up if you enjoy Pirate romances.

Unlikeable H/h, scattered storyline

This one was a miss for me from the very beginning, largely due to neither of the main characters being very likeable.
Charity is understandably distraught about her situation, but her persona is extremely abrasive. Seemingly quite spoiled and churlish, she is more snippy than frightened. For someone who aggressively professes to know that men only want one thing from a women, she continuously makes bad decisions which gives the impression that she is merely petulant and not very smart.
James is much more well rounded in his thoughts, but in practice he is much too smooth and suave. What I imagine is supposed to be playfully flirtatious banter actually comes across as quite lecherous, smarmy, and carelessly flippant.
The plot is all over the place, and never seems to come together. Additionally, I felt that despite Charity’s seeming need to put herself in danger, she had entirely too many unrealistic close calls. Please do not misunderstand, I am not saying I am surprised that she was in peril, I am saying there are only so many times that it can be believable for her to be saved at the last second. And as for moving the story forward, repeatedly placing your heroine in position to almost be raped just isn’t the best way to build suspense.

Easy Reading

There is something to be said for a quick and easy read, Tamara Hughes does just that with Tempting the Pirate. Decent story that leads the way to more in a series, typical pirate romance with a happy ending. While this novel did not stand out among the genre it was enjoyable. Good read if you are looking for a "quickie."
