Putting the will in willpower.
Josh McCain has two years to reinvent himself. Stripped of everything that made life a swanky, booze and babe-filled breeze, Josh embarks on a grueling and often hilarious two-year regimen of self-discipline that targets his mind, body, and spirit.
Along the way, skeptics mock him; his own past taunts him; and saboteurs resolve to stop him. But Josh is determined to complete his "bucket list from hell," and prove that who he was is not as important as who he can become.
Operating in unfamiliar territory, Josh turns to a cast of quirky characters to aid him on his secret journey; persons he'd have previously shunned. Upbeat and inspiring, The Will is an enthralling story of goofs and grit, of the regenerative power of friendship--and if Josh doesn't blow it--real love.

A gentle tale that stayed with me long after I finish reading
By Paint Freak
This book was very enjoyable in a very comfortable way. It follows a young man who has to complete a list of tasks in one year in order to receive the items from his fathers will. In some ways it was very formulaic. However, what makes this worth reading is that almost every character is rounded. The main protagonist is lazy and self centred, but is an intelligent and good person. You root for him even as he shows us quite clearly exactly why his father set up the conditions the way he did. The tasks are wide ranging and varied covering betterment in many areas; physical, spiritual and cerebral. In some ways it is a coming of age story.
It has twists and turns as the story sets itself up and you are led to believe he will use this person to help him complete that task… and then he doesn’t - it meanders somewhere else. It kept it from being too predictable.
There is nothing majorly traumatising or excitingly fierce. It is a very real world story. The list of tasks achievable with a will (pun intended), and as non-thrilling as this gentle tale is it has stayed with me. I was left feeling better after reading it and a list of tasks I may dip into myself.

Excellent story!
By Kindle Customer
This is the best book I've read in many months. The storyline was well written, moderately paced with touches of humor throughout. The main character, Josh, spends two years completing a bucket list his deceased father left him. The twist is that about half way through the challenge the focus changed for Josh. He came to learn how much more important people and relationships were than a monetary inheritance. I read this book in 8 hours and honestly wished there were more chapters! I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

Fun but Thoughtful Story
By E. Ensley
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The writing is very good and the author was able to make me like his play-boy, immature protagonist from the beginning and care about whether he was able to succeed in his efforts to turn his life around with the help of The List left for him in his father's will. Josh starts out thinking he is doing all this in order to gain his inheritance and be able to continue his profligate lifestyle, but ends up realizing he is doing this for himself to become a man who lives a satisfying life. Josh should have been a hopeless case, but the author shows you the glimmer of what Josh can become from the beginning as you see his empathy and true caring for people even though he has no ability to discipline his baser desires.
The List is an effort by his father to get Josh to think about deeper issues and act in positive ways. The title refers not just to his father's last will and testament, but also to the philosophy undergirding the story. The book is respectful to several religious traditions, but is at root more of a treatise on the older, moral American humanism of the Unitarians. As an example, Josh is a playboy to begin with, sleeping with numerous women with no concern for an enduring relationship, but only the pleasure he can derive from the encounters. His father asks for two years of abstinence, and at the end, Josh has formed a true committed relationship with a fine woman, but their decision after the two years is not to marry, but to live together in the modern style, at least for a time. So while the book was billed as "inspirational" it is not a Christian inspirational. There is some strong innuendo in the story and, as I said, a non-graphic sexual relationship entered into at the end of the book.
I think the true strength of the book was the cast of characters the author developed and the understated but warm humor shown throughout. There are many "characters" in the book, but they are all treated respectfully. There is an obvious villain, but you never really doubt that Josh will succeed. You only want to find out how he succeeds. And the author comes up with some believable ways for Josh to accomplish the impossible that really fit into the theme and plot of the book.
My only criticism of the book is that Josh's father is shown to be such an exceptional, thoughtful, proactive man that I really wondered how he could have let his son get trapped in the character flaws he exhibited without doing something before Josh was in his mid to late 20s. It would have made more sense to me for Josh to have been the beloved nephew rather than the son, thus the father would have had less direct control of Josh's raising and the state Josh was in would have been more believable.
All in all, this was a fun, light, surprisingly compelling read for me which also included some great quotes from numerous deep thinkers which added to the plot and didn't bog down the story at all.
